A Clash of Kings, by George R.R. Martin

Time is out of joint. The summer of peace and plenty, ten years long, is drawing to a close, and the harsh, chill winter approaches like an angry beast. Two great leaders—Lord Eddard Stark and Robert Baratheon—who held sway over an age of enforced peace are dead...victims of royal treachery. Now, from the ancient citadel of Dragonstone to the forbidding shores of Winterfell, chaos reigns, as pretenders to the Iron Throne of the Seven Kingdoms prepare to stake their claims through tempest, turmoil, and war.

As a prophecy of doom cuts across the sky—a comet the color of blood and flame—six factions struggle for control of a divided land. Eddard’s son Robb has declared himself King in the North. In the south, Joffrey, the heir apparent, rules in name only, victim of the scheming courtiers who teem over King’s Landing. Robert’s two brothers each seek their own dominion, while a disfavored house turns once more to conquest. And a continent away, an exiled queen, the Mother of Dragons, risks everything to lead her precious brood across a hard hot desert to win back the crown that is rightfully hers.

A Clash of Kings transports us into a magnificent, forgotten land of revelry and revenge, wizardry and wartime. It is a tale in which maidens cavort with madmen, brother plots against brother, and the dead rise to walk in the night. Here a princess masquerades as an orphan boy; a knight of the mind prepares a poison for a treacherous sorceress; and wild men descend from the Mountains of the Moon to ravage the countryside.

Against a backdrop of incest and fratricide, alchemy and murder, the price of glory may be measured in blood. And the spoils of victory may just go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel...and the coldest hearts. For when rulers clash, all of the land feels the tremors.

Audacious, inventive, brilliantly imagined, A Clash of Kings is a novel of dazzling beauty and boundless enchantment—a tale of pure excitement you will never forget.

This thread has been moved to the “Featured Series Read” folder.

Any hyperlinks you've made should still work.

For Series Reads books that have a stand-alone thread (such as this one), about a week after the book is finished we'll move the thread to its respective Author folder. Upcoming books in the series will remain - and appear - under the "Featured Series Read" folder.

Please note that some "Featured Series Reads" have a single generic discussion thread for all books in a series; those will remain under the "Featured Series Reads" folder.

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments I'm in for this one! I meant to do a re-read with Game of Thrones but ran out of time in December. I can start anytime in January.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Great, Logan!

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments We should start around the same time as we did the first, so we have the whole month to read it! :)

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 3473 comments I agree. I'm all for starting as soon as possible in January.

Teresa Young | 113 comments I like the beginning of January as well. It really helped to have the whole month to read it, so that if I got behind for a few days, it was not too bad to catch back up.

message 16: by Lisa (new)

Lisa De | 6 comments I would like to start towards the beginning of Jan too. It gives the whole month and already I can't wait to keep reading the series.

Mirliz | 373 comments I would also like to start as early as possible.

Kimberly (poweki) | 1713 comments I'm going to read it as well. I'm happy with any schedule that is set.

Renee (reneeconoulty) | 3309 comments I'm in. Early Jan best for me.

message 20: by Erin (new) - added it

Erin (ecardwell) I agree with all the above comments it took me forever to read GOT last year so the more time the better :)

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Okay, so I started it a little early... I am behind on my December plan and won't get to them all anyways, and we started watching the shoe, and I caved and let Alex talk me into starting season two. We've watched the first two episodes, and I told him now he has to let me get ahead in the book so it doesn't spoil too much for me. :)

Read the prologue and Chapter one about Arya. Already into it!!!

Renee (reneeconoulty) | 3309 comments Started a little early too.

Lily (lily10) Can't wait! Count me in :)

Franzi (abookparty) | 2 comments I'm already in the middle of the book, but I'd like to wait til all of you catch up :) Never did a buddy read on goodreads before!

Mirliz | 373 comments What about the reading schedule? Do we keep to the same amount of days per section as with the last book?

I have found it extremely difficult to not start reading it yet, since the start date is 2nd, and I decided not to start early!

message 26: by Logan (new) - added it

Logan (loganturner) | 1643 comments It looks like there are 19 sections in the breakdown, so if we want to finish in January we should probably do one section per day. If that's too fast we could always do 2 or 3 days per section, but it would stretch us into February.

Lisa Kay (lisakayalicemaria) | 15159 comments Mirliz wrote: "What about the reading schedule?"

Up to you all; however, I think the 2-3 days per section went well last time...

Mirliz | 373 comments Well then, I'll just read in my own pace and see when I finish. :) Probably 1-2 days per section.

message 29: by Lily (new) - added it

Lily (lily10) I really liked the 2-3 days per section. I vote for that :)

message 30: by Renee (last edited Jan 01, 2014 05:41PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Renee (reneeconoulty) | 3309 comments Last month each section covered 2 sets of questions over 3 days. I'd be happy to do one set of questions per 1 day, or the same as last month.

I might have got a bit carried away and read 2 sections before we started, so I'll answer my questions now so I don't forget, then try to read some other books for a couple of days till we catch up.

Vicky (librovert) | 3137 comments I'm still working on Game of Thrones, but I should be finished by the end of the week. I'll jump in here when I finish! :)

Rebecca | 12 comments I've been meaning to get back into this series for a while now. I'm currently reading A Tale for the TIme Being by Ruth Ozeki, but I'll be done in a few days. I'll read a Game of Thrones by Monday, and join you all then. Looking forward to it.

Teresa Young | 113 comments I would vote for the same pace as last month - it worked very well for me. However, if others want to speed up, I am pretty sure I can manage that as well.

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 3473 comments I'm trying to finish up some books before I start A Clash Of Kings. I'm so looking forward to reading this!
Of course, it doesn't help that I've recently rediscovered videogames and I've been hooked on Skyrim. It seriously cuts into my reading time :(.

Steven (gallifreyan1218) | 5272 comments Me too, Amanda! But I'm playing a Zelda game I never played! I have beaten Skyrim when it first came out and sold it and just got it again too! Haha

Amanda (daughterofoak) | 3473 comments I'm glad I'm not the only one! I feel so guilty neglecting my reading just to kill dragons and ambush bandits. lol I just made some of my skills legendary, so it's like starting over without having to actually start at zero.

I agree and am disappointed in Robb because of this.
