Sadly Im withdrawing from this challenge as I honestly cant see myself even really getting into it. Ive read about 200 pages of a non-challenge (review) book in about a month. ive deleted my list Brenda. Everyone is doing great! which is awesome. Ill check out the next challenge and see if things have picked up by then.

message 577: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I've finished my 11 for this challenge - finished The Secret Keeper - it was good, but not great. I'm giving it 3.5 stars.

I would have like to have been more swept up in the story than I was and I'm not sure why I wasn't. A lot of it is set in the 1940's which is a time period I like, and it goes back and forth between then, the 1960's and 2011, which is also a writing style I enjoy, but it just didn't completely grab me. I'm not sure whether it was because I was comparing it to the other Kate Morton's I've read and I expected too much, or whether the writing was less compelling than it could have been or something else.

I just finished another of Kate Morton's books and felt exactly the same way. The House at Riverton I've read a couple of her books now, all I enjoyed reading but didn't love. The story just kept rolling along at a fairly even pace, but for me just lacked oomph, for want of a better word.

No, I think it's good that we can set our own levels and then upgrade if necessary. Sometimes you mightn't be sure how the year will turn out at the beginning so it's good to have an easier option to start with rather than feeling overwhelmed by everything at once :-)

I really wish I could say I liked this book as much as many others seem to have, as I was so looking forward to reading it, but it just didn't grab me? I felt it had all the potential but didn't quite deliver...maybe I had set my expectations too high? :{

Bitter Greens by Kate Forsyth Definitely 5 stars. I enjoyed it much more than I expected, partly because it was as much historical fiction as fantasy but also because it was just such a great story! My review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

message 598: by Kathryn (new)

Kathryn | 3569 comments I read this for a fantasy read for this challenge too, Carolyn. And I felt the same as you - surprised at my enjoyment of it, but as you say, I think the strong historical fiction base helped me to enjoy it!

I had high expectations for this as well but like you they didn't fill them for me either. Is hard to put a finger on why because it was beautiful writing, it just didn't engage the senses I guess.

Yes, I agree Sally, I thought it had all the ingredients there but just seemed to lack cohesion, and the sense that it was building towards something. Still, many others thought it was great so I guess it comes down to personal opinion, and I am still glad I read it :)
