Hi Judy! *waves*I'm worried about my copy of Vanity Fair now. I swear mine is only 300pp so how small must the writing be inside?!
Judy wrote: "Hi Rusalka, *waves back* my copy of Vanity Fair is 754 pages, could yours be abridged? If it isn't abridged, I do not envy you reading that microscopic print!"I'm going to check it out when I get home... Lucky one lens in my glasses acts like a magnifying glass if it's not being worn. That trick has gotten me through a whole heap of exams with tiny writing on my cheat sheets.
Judy! Nice to see you! I love the way you linked. I hope you love Ocean Park. That was a goodie. *waves*
I looked. It's on Bible thin paper. It is 640 pages it seems (whacks that in the pile). But I took some photos so you can see why i was confused.Last book read type distribution, compared to this one. Not too bad. Bit tighter. Although Vanity Fair is an inch shorter than the PD James.
Vanity Fair is 640pp, PD James book is 256pp. Very little difference!
Hi Judy. Very creative to use the titles to spell a word! I had to look up a couple of your books. I have heard of three of them, but the first was new. Looks interesting, but HUGE!I read South of Broad. It was great! I will be watching for your comments on it as well as the others.
Re Vanity Fair. Did you read The Pilgrim's Progress? I have a copy on my Nook and have looked at it a couple of times, but never committed to read. I was always curious about it from reading Little Women. I know that Vanity Fair has something to do with it. Just curious.

I agree! cool idea. :)
If it was me, I'd just use message #1 and Bold the header for each section. Mind you, editing that could get a bit cumbersome later in the year. You could reserve the next few messages for Mickey, etc right after this message. You want to keep your convo messages.
@ Vanity Fair edited by John Carey. "The book's title comes from John Bunyan's allegorical story The Pilgrim's Progress, first published in 1678 and still widely read a the time of Thackeray's novel. Vanity fair refers to a stop along the pilgrim's progress: a never-ending fair held in a town called Vanity, which is meant to represent man's sinful attachment to worldly things."
Hello Judy *waves frantically til her arm hurts*. Good to see you'll be joining me, Janice and some others in just aiming for Slick-ness. :-D
Judy wrote: "Have you read it before, Laura?"Nope. Not sure but I may have removed it from my list. I'm looking for books that move along. That may be a good one, but I hesitate to read it while I'm craving thrillers and mysteries.
Judy wrote: "I'm going to give this one a shot. My connection is going to be using the titles of my books to spell "chunky". Here is what Slick and I came up with:Vicomte de Bragelonne [book:Vicomte de Bragel..."
My daughter got Vanity Fair for Xmas, have to say I was tempted to sneak it into my gift pile. Will be anxious to hear thoughts on it.
Judy wrote: "Janice wrote: "Enjoy, Judy. I'm going to be starting with my style of classic, The Shining. Hehehehe!"Haha. Have you read it before? That should be a good one to start with."
Yes. I read it back in the mid 70's. I have Doctor Sleep slated for Slick's Slugs. After some encouragement here, I decided to reread The Shining first and reworked my intended chunkster reads to accommodate it.
Yay, Judy! I like your connecting idea. Those look like some pretty heavy books (pun intended). Good luck!
If I ever get a chance to read VF, Judy, I will have to get you to tell me WHICH 350 pages to skip! LOL! I keep tripping over Pilgrims Progress, which I have on my Nook. (((Sigh))) someday...
What's next? My youngest daughter is listening to South of Broad. She LOVES it. We have both read it, but she wanted to listen, so I got it from the library for her.
You are a great moderator at AtW Judy! I read South of Broad quite awhile ago and did enjoy it although my rating doesn't seem to reflect that. I was rather stingy with ratings initially when I joined Goodreads.
Judy wrote: "I'm trying to finish Child 44 for the monthly read and then I am in a quandary of which of my chunksters to read next. I was seriously considering reading [book:South of Broad|613523..."Piffle. You = wonderful mod
Judy wrote: "I am listening to South of Broad and getting ready to read Black Hawk Down."LOL! If I didn't have so many other things to listen to and read, I would re-listen to SoB again before I take it back to the library, but I have to move on. Enjoy!
I enjoyed Pat Conroy's Beach Music, and I just read and loved, loved, loved The Lords of Discipline! You have peaked my interest in South of Broad...
Hi, Judy! Just stopping by to say hello and cheer you on! So glad to see you here!! You are really firing away at the chunksters! Congratulations on all the BIG books you have completed! : )
Did you see the movie BHD? I saw it a couple of times and liked it well enough. I've wondered how the book would fare.
I wonder if the book has more background detail than the movie. I don't recall that the movie showed any real horrific details (other than the usual war flick fare). But then, my memory can be a bit hazy.
And then, again, maybe the movie is not milder. The scene with the severed artery is one that stayed with me.
I always find reading it so much worse than watching it. How funny. Somehow my mind imagining it grosses me out so much more than what a Director can do. I guess as I am my own Director and think about things I can't stand/stomach.
I'm with Rusalka. I have a very vivid imagination so tend to conjure up all sorts in my mind when I read. If I watch a film adaptation after I've read a book, it's often much tamer than what I've thought up!
I love when I am pleasantly surprised by a book. Hope you keep laughing your way through the rest of the book!
You're having good luck with your chunksters of late, Judy! :)(PS Go O's! :D I'm totally hooked now.)
