Oh, I just re-read the directions and realized I've been doing something wrong. I've been trying to make every book I chose fit on one of the shelves. I'm just now realizing -- if it satisfies a category, it is not necessary that it be on one of the shelves, correct?
I realize it's nice if they overlap, because that's fewer books total. But especially in March, since the categories are so tough, if I find a multiple POV I like (for example), I don't have to find a shelf to fit it on?
Ah, the magic of or vs and !

Really? Oh, my goodness.
Really? Oh, my goodness.

Oh, wow, I've been doing it the hard way, too.
ah, the hard way does mean lesser book total overall... though the option is there to take the easier route :)

You can change your planned reads at anytime, CassieV. They are only plans, after all.
If you've read the books, however, you can't use it, if you've read it prior to the Card being announced. So, if you've got a January book you've read which fit in March Card but you've read it before March Card was announced then you can't claim it for March.

Sounds good. Thanks!

LOL...I always said that my brain cells headed south when I was pregnant and never returned, and I have two very smart kids. No wonder I can't remember what day of the week it is most of the time...

I was going to see if you posted this morning, and then post if you didn't. I will try to be more on top of it in the future.

Tien, I know I'll have a lot of catching up to do, but I'd like to join this game if it's not too late. I finally got around to reading how to play this, and it sounds like fun!
Talia - Really you can start at any time, since you can work backwards. You can totally catch up, and we are glad to have you aboard.

Each month / card read books which feature the chosen letter as the first letter of a word in the title or authors name, and match either a shelf and / or up to 3 categories ? Correct ?
So, each shelf / category does not need to be covered in each card ? ( Sorry, just saw you can only skip one shelf per card, 6 times per season. So books MUST match shelves, but they can miss categories, particularly if you can score up to 3 categories for 1 book ).
And, although I am starting in May, I can go back and read from all cards, beginning at Jan 1, 2014 ?
Thanks!

I think you've got it, Amanda. You can definitely go back and do cards for the prior months. The rule is that you can't read early...meaning that you can't read a book in June that you then apply to the card for July, August, etc. You are fine to read a book in June for a task for January, February...up to and including June. Hope that made sense.
As for the card, here is what I have allocated for June so far:
June - R
Shelves:
1. wwii: Briar Rose (e,g)
2. indie-own
3. creepy: Battle Royale (b,c)
4. life-changing: The Richest Man in Babylon (f,j)
5. historical-mystery: A Trace Of Smoke by Rebecca Cantrell
6. shifter: Many Bloody Returns (l)
7. battle-of-the-books: The Running Dream (a,d)
8. womens-fiction: Attachments by Rainbow Rowell (i)
9. alternate-history: The Rithmatist (h)
10. 1001-books-to-read-before-i-die: The Romantics (k)
11. apocalyptic: Red Hill
12. futuristic: Reboot
With the exception of the indie-own shelf (I'm still looking for a book for that one), I have found one book per shelf. The letters in parentheses represent the categories the books fit. As you said and can see from the example, there are multiple categories (up to 3) assigned to certain books and none for others. I was able to use all 12 categories with only 8 books leaving 4 books that don't need to have a category assigned.
Did I help or confuse you...;-)

Just glad husband is at work this weekend, and my daughter is on camp, so I have plenty of time to go through my books and allocate ;)
Going to have to go back and alter my TBR spreadsheet to add a new challenge group. Yep, I have a folder dedicated to GR challenge readings. Figure that, the more challenges I do, the more likely I am to make my way through my TBR and 1001 book lists!

Welcome Amanda. Glad to see you aboard. I think that Amy explained the game pretty well, but if you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask. You can send me a PM or post here. I try to get on at least once a day.
Amy - Thanks for explaining, and the GREAT example. :)

One more question, since I am joining in May, can I use reads that I have completed in the time period ( as verified by my Read list ) as long as it fits into the time period of Cards ( ie, read in March-April, can work for Jan-April cards ) ?

As long as you read the book AFTER the card for that month was announced, then you can go back and use it. It is a bit tricky since the game started on January 1, but the cards are usually posted on the 15th of the month. So--here is the schedule:
January - Anything read after Jan 1, 2014
Feb - Anything read after Jan 15, 2014
Mar - Anything read after Feb 15, 2014
and so on. So you can actually start reading books that apply to the June card now. You don't have to wait until after June 1.
The only other difference is that the December card will be open until Jan 31, 2015, so you actually have from Nov 15, 2014 to Jan 31, 2015 to read for that card.
Hope that clears it up.
Also - Just a clarification. Every book does NOT have to belong to a shelf. It does have to belong to a shelf OR up to 3 categories. So, for instance...If you find a book for the Multiple POV category, but it doesn't fit on one of the shelves, that is okay. In the end, to call the card complete, all 12 shelves and all 12 categories must be met.
The biggest drawback to reading books that fit categories only is that you end up reading more books that way. That is why most people make sure that all of their books fit a shelf.
Hopefully that hasn't confused the heck out of you, but let me know.

And, now that I am finally home I can start allocating books - starting with January.
and, thanks Tien!

Just wait until it explodes your list of books you want to read .... :P

My own personal rules : it has to be on our bookshelves, and a new read. Makes it that little bit more challenging, especially the Kids and Childhood shelves. I have a 7yo, but we have read everything there, over and over again! ( Well, until this year, when she no longer wants to read with us :( )
Amanda - It gets better, though. Eventually she will get old enough and you will read the same books. That is what happened with me and my boys, who are college age now.

Same here. My daughter, who is 25 now, is the one who introduced me to Goodreads :-)

I picked up almost 50 new-to-me books, so hopefully have some more options for allocations. I hope.

For the published date, I am using first published, not the date of the edition I am using, I am presuming this is correct ?
With books that the category is more than one POV, where do you find that out ? Struggling to allocate books to these, because I am not sure which books might be. Help!

Yes, you go by year first published.
Regarding the multiple POV, there are some genres that lend themselves to this such as mysteries and thrillers. You can always post the book here and perhaps someone whose read it can tell you. Another option is to see if the metadata for the book has been updated to include POV - click on the "edit details" link in the book info under the blurb and it will take you to the metadata.

I have been finding that the POV books are the hardest ones to find. I think many of us have read a book only to find out partway through that the POV is not correct. I would say that listing the book on that month's thread and asking if anyone has read it is probably good. You can also look at other members threads where they are keeping track of their progress and see what they have listed.
As for publication date, the date first published is what we are looking for.

There wasn't a ruling on hyphenated words, Christina. And an interesting question!
Correct me if I'm wrong... hyphens are usually used to join 2 or more words to become one word?
Correct me if I'm wrong... hyphens are usually used to join 2 or more words to become one word?
so if 'High-Rise' counts as one word, I'd say it wouldn't work for 'R'...
unless someone else has a different view on whether 'High-Rise' is one or two words?

If anyone could look it over and see where I might have missed a category ( particularly multiple POVs if you have read something , hint, hint ;) ), I'd really appreciate it.
Much harder than I thought.

I just finished a book for one category .... only to realize that neither the title nor the author's name had the key letter!! LOL! It is hard to fit in everything.

Christina wrote: "Oh man! I haven't done that... Yet! I have, however, spent a full day making a list without remembering the letter."
Me too!
But I discovered a long list of new books I was interested in while doing so. The only question is when I'll ever find time to read them. :)
