I learned today that crane flies don't suck blood. In the last days I killed about half a dozen of them, but I thought it was in self defense.

Ha! Good ol' Harriet. She's pretty well known for not really reading those books. In order for her to hit her numbers regularly, she'd have to read 2-3 books a day and write almost as many reviews. But she's iconic, in her own way. My condolences to her family.

HomeInMyShoes I was doing the math. It's like that i thing that makes one's head explode.

Amazon has only been around since July 1994. I'm pretty sure the review system wasn't there right away either.

The concept of reading 31,000 books in a 63 year lifespan is pretty daunting as well. Unless of course we count children's and toddler's books. Then it becomes somewhat doable.

I'd probably go insane reviewing children's books though. "The suspense was incredible. What was Spot going to do next? I had no idea. Four stars."

Although the one I read yesterday deserves a review: I Don't Like Koala: with audio recording. This book will make you smile even if you don't have kids.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments I don't know the lady or when she started reading. I tend to average about 4 or 5 books a week. Sometimes I finish a book or even 2 a day. That averages out with times I tend to burn out or not feel like reading. Of course I am retired and disabled so (as Nicki noted) I get to read a bit more now than "before".

Persistence, my ass, lol. She and her son were selling the books online as fast as she could get them in her paws. She'd get loads of DTB new releases, write a piss-ant review and then sell the books on Ebay or something like that.

I totally think that there are people who can read extremely fast. When I have the free time I can get through several books a day and at least 4-5 a week, too.

But not this fast.

It was a gig that allowed her and her son to sell thousands of brand new books as used copies online.

If you were to go read her reviews, you will rarely (read: never) find any depth. There will only be comments found from the blurb, etc. She did not read the books. Most of them could be found - for sale - by her son on release day (or several days before if not a TradPub).

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments Well as noted I don't know anything about her. I remember I used to go to the monthly library book sale here in Nashville.

Once a month all the books pulled from the shelves of every branch go on sale in the Donelson branch.

Anyway the people who were just buying books to resell on the Internet drove me crazy. Hard backs were (at that time) $1 each and any soft backs were $.50. People would snatch books out of your hand. Also there were decorator types buying books by color and size..

If I tried I could burn through more books but mostly I just read for entertainment or as study. Not in a race, LOL.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Today I learned that there are people more bitter than I am about Facebook. LOL

I have often thought this kind of thing when I see "news" about a celebrity is caught using public transportation, or if one of the Kartrashians coughed, or if someone who is probably famous for something gets a tattoo.

This is in regards to a trending news headline about Jason Mraz getting married. I thought it was humorous.

"Just to the left of this Home thingy where I am writing this is another box thingy titled "Trending". It always has a person's name or an event in it. Right now is Jason Mraz: Singer marries Christina Carano in Woodland Ceremony. Who the hell is Jason Mraz and Christina Carano? Why would I even care if they got married. If they are some kind of Hollywood types, I guess this "Trending" thingy will announce they have gotten divorced six months from now. Why is this trending? Why would anyone even care about this couple. Wouldn't it be more interesting to read about Billy Joe Bob Beerbelly getting married to Mary Jane Rottencrotch? That is a marrage that will last for years because Mary Jane is going to reform Billy Joe Bob and stop his drunken womanizing ways. Billy Joe Bob is too dumb to leave Mary Jane and return to his old ways of being single except for when he got lucky at the Saturday night wet t-shirt contest down at Sneaky Feet's Bar & Grill. This is what should be "Trending"."

Yeah. That used to happen at our library a lot, too. Burns me up cause you have to be on your Ps & Qs to get a good book now. Bamas. :(

But when I do get to them first, I go through that sale like a locust, lol. But I know more than likely the next person is buying to re-sale. Ugh.

That is hilarious.

I don't go to FB any more. Maybe once or twice a year to tighten up security (cause they make it less and less secure every year).

Stephanie (quiltsrme) | 119 comments I just have facebook to access coupons, my brothers account and my former quilt guild's photos (shop guild disbanded when shop closed). I used to play that Farm game with my sisters but we lost interest after a year or so.

As to reviewers, i learned in college, professional reviewers only read 50 or so pages of a book. They read beginning, ending and a random chapter, then the back. Cookbook reviewers rarely actually TRY any recipes. Reviews on Amazon and on Goodreads are often political, but moreover, reveal too much of the plot for my liking. So I tend to avoid reviews until I've read at least some of the book. In some cases i would have quit a very good book due to a slow start had i not read review before i gave it up. On Basilisk Station was like that.

Oh wow!! WOw!

That story is right, though. There are less and less blind people who can read braille - it's just super expensive for the books (when they are printed) and if you don't use it you lose it. :(

I'm going to forward my cousin this article. Thanks!

That's sad. When I review cookbooks I almost always try at least 4-8 recipes before I can say it's ready for "review." Unless, of course, the recipes are all things I would refuse to make or eat - which is its own kind of review.
