I have heard many opinions of the Mortal Instruments, and after reading the summary of this book, I feel conflicted. For those who read both, is this series the same as mortal instruments? Or are they different? If so, how?

I feel that the Infernal Devices is substantially better than The Mortal Instruments. I liked the story and the telling of it better. Plus, I absolutely adored the ending of the final book. Having said that, I don't think that The Mortal Instruments is bad, I just thing The Infernal Devices is better.
There are similarities and differences between the series. The main characters in both are a girl who is just being introduced the the Shadowhunter world. There are also some character that are present in both series.
As for the differences, the characters are different as is the time period and location. The story is also different, though domination is still the goal of the antagonist.

Well, the Infernal Devices is actually very different from the Mortal Instruments once you get into it. There may be a few characters that are similar, but the story is a lot different from City of Bones. I personally like the Infernal Devices better, because the friendship and love in that series is stronger than the Mortal Instruments. In the Mortal Instruments, the main characters discovers that she is also a shadowhunter and tries to get to know the shadow world better. But in the Infernal Devices, the main character coincidentally runs into a shadowhunter and realizes that she has the power to save them. So it is quite different, if you think about it. I say, go read it. You will really like it. But really, it is up to you.
Hope that helps :)

I liked the Infernal Devices just a little more. I love historical romance novels so that maybe where my bias leans too.
However.... I cried like a baby at the end of the third book. I just loved Will, Jem and Tessa and though the ending was great I was in a depression for the rest of the day.

Infernal Devices without a doubt absolutely brilliant! unlike the mortal instruments Cassandra Clare knew to leave the story at book 3!
The Characters in The Infernal Devices are also much more complex :)

I think TMI has better secondary characters, but TID has a better protagonist.
However, TMI mentions Magnus more so I Like TMI better :)

Infernal Devices is totally better! Clary (my opinion) is way too whiny and weak unlike Tessa!
The Infernal Devices!! You definitely need to check em' out!! The characters are just AMAZING...and ya it's much much better than TMI :)
So I have read both and I have to say I completely loved both of the series but I think that Infernal Devices is better just ever so slightly. Mortal Instruments is really good and I love the romance in it with Clary and Jace but Jace always seems to be depressed so I hope that that will change as for the last book that is coming out this May 27th(So exited)but it has yet to make me cry like the epilogue did in Infernal Instruments for the Clockwork Princess. We do still have the last book though and I do believe that books that make you cry tend to be great books like Allegiant. So I say Infernal Devices
I prefer the infernal devices series to mortal instruments. I liked both series but the steampunk feel and characters of the infernal devices appealed more to me.
Ok i liked the infernal devices way better but i think that both tid and tmi are pretty good i would just read them both then make your own opinion...
