What are you reading? (Dec 2013)
So I'm reading Song of Kali by Dan Simmons and it is fantastic. The only other book I've read by him was The Terror back in August, but he is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

The new year hasn't even started yet and I'm already swamped with books I want to read.

I read
yesterday, by Alex Hughes. It was an excellent blend of Urban sci if and crime procedural. It reminded me of what I love about Harry Dresden and October Daye. I'm starting the second book today!
Errr. I always meant Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. I always include lit about those turtles when I read the Chronicles of Narnia.

It's simple to start a thread for your discussion. Then those participating can decide on the order of read and any time line. Enjoy. I probably won't formally join as I have more to read than I'll ever finish, LOL. I may pop in for discussion if you don't mind. It's been years since I read the final book in the Narnia series but...

I just finished Magician's Gambit but I haven't finished the review for Queen of Sorcery... >.>
<.<
I started on the lion, witch, wardrobe but I haven't gotten any reading done in the last few days due to family stuff. Today I'm cooking our personal Christmas dinner.

I want a turtle. Don't have anywhere to put the tank, though. I guess we could put it where the lizard tank was, but we have other stuff there now.Besides, I could never let the poor thing out without close supervision, 'cause of the cats. The poor lizard lived in constant fear, I think, with them hovering about.
I was always nervous of having other (smaller) pets around the cats, too. I wanted a chinchilla, but cats are vicious buggers, bless their snuggly little hearts.
My brothers cats do great with the turtle. They are curious but they don't hurt him and Darryl doesn't seem to mind them around. He just struts his turtle stuff. When they decided to get a turtle I kinda thought it would be lame but Darryl has a lot of personality. He's cool.
On topic-ish: I've promised myself I won't read anything new until Jan 1st, because I want to start the 2014 challenge at the same time as re-starting my blog and carrying out my commitment to review everything I read. It all lines up so nicely.
And it's just a few days, and I've been a slow reader this year, so I thought it'd be easy.
Except that having decided not to read, instead of quietly failing to do so, it's killing me.
I'm thinking of reading something really fluffy that I don't care about reviewing or logging for any challenges, but everything I look at makes me go 'Actually, that might make for a good review after all...'

I actually have no reviews posted at the moment -- I deleted them all off GR following the review policy change (before I calmed down), and also ended up moving blogs, so... 2014 is the perfect opportunity for a blank slate. :)
It just needs to get here quicker!

That's a good thought, Nienna.

When I was still at home (about 15 or 16 I guess) my sister had a cat and my brother had one of those small turtles. For a long time every morning we'd find the turtle on the kitchen floor every morning. We could never figure out how the turtle was getting out of the tank. It had a raised island for the turtle to climb on but it wasn't near the edge. Then one night very late I heard a bump-bump-bump coming from the kitchen. I went in and the turtle was on the floor pulled completely into its shell and the cat was batting it around the room. It would slide across the tiles bounce off the bottom of a cabinet, then she'd bat it into a wall and it would bounce of. It was like turtle pinball.
Apparently the cat would "paw" the turtle up the side of the tank and play with it all night.
I can only imaging what was going through the turtle's mind.

Just finished Goblet of Fire. After... oh, I don't even know how many rereads... I still get choked up...
The turtle seemed to come through it okay...but we had to give the parakeet to my grandmother. We'd put a hook in the ceiling to keep the cat away from the cage, then we came home and found the cat hanging from the bottom of the cage, the bird flying around the top of the cage squawking.

Yeah.
Colleen wrote: "Just finished Goblet of Fire. After... oh, I don't even know how many rereads... I still get choked up..."Awww. That's why I stopped listening to the HP audiobooks. I cry through all the books. I'm listening to the first couple chapters of the first book getting all teaedr up at work thinking about how mean the Dursley's are to Harry.

The reasons why I'm "afraid" to reread Harry Potter (spoilers ahead):1. (view spoiler)

Still working through the audio on A Tale of Two Cities. It's going good, I just don't get time every day to listen.
Next challenge read is Beyond This Dark House, Guy Gavriel Kay's book of poetry. I'm more than halfway as it goes pretty quickly. Not bad, for poetry.
Then on a whim I started The History of the Snowman: From the Ice Age to the Flea Market and finished it yesterday. I had an email for the free ebook from Simon & Schuster. Because I'm a Nook user and not an Amazon Drone Kindle reader, I had to read it on my iphone. Heh. It was decent enough, and I could read it in short bursts between rounds of Words With Friends.
