Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments Started Steelheart the other day. Loving it, but I set it down for the moment to knock out a couple of 2013 challenge reads.

Still working through the audio on A Tale of Two Cities. It's going good, I just don't get time every day to listen.

Next challenge read is Beyond This Dark House, Guy Gavriel Kay's book of poetry. I'm more than halfway as it goes pretty quickly. Not bad, for poetry.

Then on a whim I started The History of the Snowman: From the Ice Age to the Flea Market and finished it yesterday. I had an email for the free ebook from Simon & Schuster. Because I'm a Nook user and not an Amazon Drone Kindle reader, I had to read it on my iphone. Heh. It was decent enough, and I could read it in short bursts between rounds of Words With Friends.

Nyssa | 2023 comments That thread is for us! :)

message 356: by Caleb (new)

Caleb Clark | 24 comments So I'm reading Song of Kali by Dan Simmons and it is fantastic. The only other book I've read by him was The Terror back in August, but he is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors.

The Terror is one of my favorite books. Which reminds me I have to read The Abominable. The new year hasn't even started yet and I'm already swamped with books I want to read.

Laurel I read Clean (Mindspace Investigations, #1) by Alex Hughes yesterday, by Alex Hughes. It was an excellent blend of Urban sci if and crime procedural. It reminded me of what I love about Harry Dresden and October Daye. I'm starting the second book today! Sharp (Mindspace Investigations, #2) by Alex Hughes

Chris Haught (haughtc) | 2450 comments The Lionardo, the Witch, and the Wardrobe
The Voyage of the Dawn Atello
The Last Turtle
The Shredder's Nephew
The Silver Shell
ok, I'll stop now..

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments It's simple to start a thread for your discussion. Then those participating can decide on the order of read and any time line. Enjoy. I probably won't formally join as I have more to read than I'll ever finish, LOL. I may pop in for discussion if you don't mind. It's been years since I read the final book in the Narnia series but...

message 377: by colleen the convivial curmudgeon, Not a book hipster! (new)

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments I want a turtle. Don't have anywhere to put the tank, though. I guess we could put it where the lizard tank was, but we have other stuff there now.

Besides, I could never let the poor thing out without close supervision, 'cause of the cats. The poor lizard lived in constant fear, I think, with them hovering about.

message 378: by [deleted user] (last edited Dec 27, 2013 07:23AM) (new)

I was always nervous of having other (smaller) pets around the cats, too. I wanted a chinchilla, but cats are vicious buggers, bless their snuggly little hearts.

message 379: by Felina (new)

Felina My brothers cats do great with the turtle. They are curious but they don't hurt him and Darryl doesn't seem to mind them around. He just struts his turtle stuff. When they decided to get a turtle I kinda thought it would be lame but Darryl has a lot of personality. He's cool.

On topic-ish: I've promised myself I won't read anything new until Jan 1st, because I want to start the 2014 challenge at the same time as re-starting my blog and carrying out my commitment to review everything I read. It all lines up so nicely.

And it's just a few days, and I've been a slow reader this year, so I thought it'd be easy.

Except that having decided not to read, instead of quietly failing to do so, it's killing me.

I'm thinking of reading something really fluffy that I don't care about reviewing or logging for any challenges, but everything I look at makes me go 'Actually, that might make for a good review after all...'

Maybe do a reread of something you've already reviewed?

message 382: by [deleted user] (new)

I actually have no reviews posted at the moment -- I deleted them all off GR following the review policy change (before I calmed down), and also ended up moving blogs, so... 2014 is the perfect opportunity for a blank slate. :)

It just needs to get here quicker!

message 383: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments Maybe read short stories? There are always freebies online. Classic and not. Or an anthology?

message 384: by Felina (new)

Felina Jus do a re-watch of the X-Files. That will take up your spare time until the 1st.

message 385: by [deleted user] (new)

That's a good thought, Nienna.

Felina wrote: "Jus do a re-watch of the X-Files. That will take up your spare time until the 1st."

Hah, that'll take me until February. :D I so need to rewatch that show though...

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments When I was still at home (about 15 or 16 I guess) my sister had a cat and my brother had one of those small turtles. For a long time every morning we'd find the turtle on the kitchen floor every morning. We could never figure out how the turtle was getting out of the tank. It had a raised island for the turtle to climb on but it wasn't near the edge.

Then one night very late I heard a bump-bump-bump coming from the kitchen. I went in and the turtle was on the floor pulled completely into its shell and the cat was batting it around the room. It would slide across the tiles bounce off the bottom of a cabinet, then she'd bat it into a wall and it would bounce of. It was like turtle pinball.

Apparently the cat would "paw" the turtle up the side of the tank and play with it all night.

I can only imaging what was going through the turtle's mind.

message 387: by Felina (new)

Felina Nah. Set up some fondu. Block out a week. Close the blinds and get going. You'll get it done.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Just finished Goblet of Fire. After... oh, I don't even know how many rereads... I still get choked up...

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 1381 comments The turtle seemed to come through it okay...but we had to give the parakeet to my grandmother. We'd put a hook in the ceiling to keep the cat away from the cage, then we came home and found the cat hanging from the bottom of the cage, the bird flying around the top of the cage squawking.
