colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments A place for you lot to do your Narnia buddy read.

Please mark all spoilers, or I will cut you!

(It might also help to give context to your spoilers - like which book you're talking about and whatnot.) ;)

The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe - 1/1/14
Prince Caspian - 1/15/14
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader - 1/29/14
The Silver Chair - 2/12/13
The Horse and His Boy - 2/26/14

Nyssa | 2023 comments So fellow "Narnia Buddies", how do we want to do this?
Do we all read at our own pace and chosen order then just comment where we are?
Do we agree to an order and time line? I'd like to vote for publication order.

I would like to suggest, that when we comment we start with the book title (instead of number).

Publication Order is as follows:
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
Prince Caspian
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
The Silver Chair
The Horse and His Boy
The Magicians Nephew
The Last Battle

Chronological Order is as follows:
The Magicians Nephew
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe
The Horse and His Boy
Prince Caspian
The Voyage of the Dawn Treader
The Silver Chair
The Last Battle

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 331 comments I vote for publication order also. Whatever you guys want to do as far as schedule is ok with me. I would think since they are small books, we could do one every 2 weeks, or at our own pace is fine, too. :)

Every two weeks sounds great, actually!! I was thinking that myself. I know for January, I want to read all of the group selections, so having a little extra time would be greatly appreciated!

message 5: by Jackie (new)

Jackie (thenightowl) I'll join in on this one. I've "overbooked" myself on reading commitments for January already, so I may fall a little behind on the scheduled reading.

message 6: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I vote for publication order too. Normally I would probably go chrono order but we're already starting with publication order so... it makes it easier.
I also like 1 book every 2 weeks. 1 book a month doesn't work for me. If I don't finish a series quickly it never gets done.

message 7: by Felina (new)

Felina I'm down with publication order. I'm going to try to save TMN until the end. I might fail. :) and every two weeks sounds reasonable to me.

message 8: by Nyssa (new)

Nyssa | 2023 comments Yay! Do we want to set an official start date?

Sunday is Dec. 29th. The 1st is on Wed. Or, we can start Jan. 5th, the week after the holiday.
I'd personally like to start sooner than later, as I have one more week of Winter Break, then its back to work (I'm a substitute teacher).

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Ya know, whenever you say TMN I think TMNT...

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 331 comments Since The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe a January book for the group, how about we start that book 1/1/14, with the next approximately 1/15/14?

Felina Sounds good.

Lee | 939 comments I didn't notice before that the publication order and chrono order was *that* different. Only the last book is the same in both…

Emily (ohmagichour) | 510 comments Jackpot - found the whole series in a box set on my shelf in my childhood bedroom while I was home for Christmas!!

message 24: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 331 comments That's great, Emily! I had a nice big omnibus, which I got ages ago, but my son, while he was home on Christmas break told me that that was crazy for me to read with my back being all screwy! I had forgotten I had bought him a boxed set of the individual paperbacks when he was younger. He pulled that out for me to use. What a sweetie! He's looking out for me! :)

I used to have original copies but they are all gone now. :(

I do have the omibus but I love my DTBs. I wouldn't mind buying copies of the original paperbacks, though.

Yay!!! I kind of wish I had a boxed set instead of the omnibus as well.

1. The individual books would be easier for me to take to school so that i can read during my planning period and lunch breaks.

2. I won't have to flip back and forth since we're reading in publication order instead of chronological.

On the plus side, I could tackle another book during my work days and just read this one at night.

I've got three copies of this series -- one all-in-one leatherbound omnibus, one that comes in three hardback omnibuses that my parents bought me when I was a kid, and one in individual paperbacks.

Not that I'm obsessive or anything.

No problem. We opted on every two weeks to give people the opportunity to read other things in between (for instance, if they're doing challenges).

Felina I have a nice little box set my Mom got me in 8th grade.

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 331 comments I figured since everyone is discussing TLtWatW in the group read folder, we would leave that there. We can jump over here when we start Prince Caspian.

Corbyal Ashclaw (ashclawsnephew) | 1 comments Not to cause a dispute or anything, but the Magician's nephew is the prequel to The Lion the witch and the wardrobe, and if you read it right before the Last Battle you might end up feeling a bit lost. The Magician's nephew was written after the others but it makes way more sense if you read it first because it offers insight into rest of the series- its a little book of things you will wish you had known before you stepped into Narnia. It's the how it all began story.

I disagree. One million percent. It is easily read at the place it was published with no confusion whatsoever.

We actually had that discussion before starting the buddy read. [I would add a link if I could remember in which thread we discussed it, maybe someone else can help out with that!?!]
I too, originally, thought it would be better to read it in chronological order, however, some of the other group members who are familiar with the series made good arguments as to why we should go ahead by publication date, and in the end I agreed with them.

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) | 331 comments Yes, I meant Peter, Lucy, Edmund and Susan. I couldn't remember how to spell their last name.

colleen the convivial curmudgeon (blackrose13) | 2976 comments Started 'Prince Caspian' this morning. Not very far in, and I'll be reading sporadically since it's my workout read.

Still haven't decided if I'll do the whole series. We'll see how it goes.

I'll admit I had to double check the publication order to see which book we're reading next so I wouldn't get the wrong one. Reading #2 & #4 seems to go against how I would usually read a series. But I figure this was the order that they were in originally so it shouldn't be too confusing.

I think I have to agree with you on the first spoiler (didn't read the second-haven't read Prince Caspian yet). But since I finished Lion, Witch, Wardrobe I keep thinking of (view spoiler)

As someone who has read this series time and time again...I have to say that it won't bother you in the least. It works more like a flashback than a beginning. It doesn't have the wonder associated with TLWW. At all. To be honest, I can see people DNFing the series if the start with The Magician's Nephew. It's kinda boring as a standalone but if you already have knowledge of Narnia you'll be like, "That's Aslan! That's how the _____ started!!! Wow! It's _____!!! I know what this means!

But if you read TMN first...it's all kinda meh. It doesn't have the foreboding that reading it later has.

message 50: by Lee (new)

Lee | 939 comments I had started the series years ago and stopped. I want to say I started with The Magician's Nephew but I don't remember anything about it. Although, I do suspect who it is about.
