What are you reading? (Dec 2013)
Kathy wrote: "I loved Stephen King's The Long Walk! That's one of my favorite stories of his! :)"I finished it this morning. It was really good.
I decided to go with The Valley of Fear by Arthur Conan Doyle for my next read. I'm trying to complete my "ABC Challenge" for another group and still need a V. I can't believe it but I still haven't read the Dresden series. I REALLY want to. Once I finish up some of the series I've already started, that will be one of my first ones to start. Ever since I joined UF Aficionados I hear about the series all the time!
Jackie wrote: "I don't know what to pick up as my next ebook or physical book. Feeling kinda blah about everything I pick up lately."You and me both. I'm reading that Peerless Four book I need to review, and I'm so uninterested in it. But then, I've never been a big one for reading sports lit. I was just hoping that this one would be cool because it was about the first female athletes allowed in the modern olympics.
I think I'm going to finish off the Dark Tower graphic novels I have waiting for me. I think I have 3 or 4 at least.

Ooh. This looks like something that needs to be on my TBR.

I think I put myself in a bad situation.. I'm going to be finishing up my Mistborn re-read either tonight or tomorrow (so good) and I have no idea what to read next. What can top Mistborn? Nothing, that's what. I have a feeling I'm going to be going into a reading slump for a while :(
I reread Mistborn last month. I love that series. Its a favorite. Probably even over LotR. Which I'm rereading at the moment.
I'm being very good about reading Pawn of Prophecy and working on a review of it at the same time. Since I'm familiar with the story already its working so far.
I need to finish Mistborn. I got part way through the second book and stalled cause I don't like Vin. At this point I'll need to start over. What a shame to have to reread Mistborn. Like torture...not. LOTR...that's rough. I've never been so bored in my life.

Like torture......"I struggle with the 2nd Mistborn book for the same reason. Vin isn't my favorite character anyway and she gets a little too angsty for me in it. But if you liked the 1st book and like other things about the series I do recommend pushing through. I love the 3rd book.
I started Mistborn and was enjoying it, but just ran out of steam pretty early on. I just think my timing was off. I know I'll get back to it (and restart) someday.
Felina wrote: "LOTOR...that's rough. I've never been so bored in my life."Its been awhile but I don't remember the begining being this so dang slow. Hey, Frodo. Great danger. Evil coming. Important mission. But you know... don't rush or anything.
Don't get me wrong. I love LotR. But I can't wait for the book to start. Maybe I should just watch the movie... kidding... just kidding.
I just finished The Dark Unwinding by Sharon Cameron - very vaguely steampunkish, more a kind of gothic novel with suspense and madness and romance, oh my.Started off a bit slow, but I really liked it by the end.
Colleen wrote: "The movies are better than the books.Yeah, I said it."
I like the books. But I have to admit if you gave me a choice between reading the book or watching the movie, I'd pick movie. So... I have to agree.
Colleen wrote: "The movies are better than the books.Yeah, I said it."
I whole heartedly agree. All the books needed was some editing and. Some Viggo.

Every time you like something I put it n my TBR immediately.
Oh. I didn't want to ask. Lol. I'm definitely going to read that book again before the 2nd one. Can't wait!
I think I'll give Academ's Fury a try. Read a chapter or two, see if it catches me. If not... Rinse and repeat with something different.
Dawn wrote: "I think I'll give Academ's Fury a try. Read a chapter or two, see if it catches me. If not... Rinse and repeat with something different."I'll be watching to see what you think. I wasn't too impressed with the first one.
The first one was.. Fine. I'm hoping the rest of the series move up into good / entertaining territory.
Dawn wrote: "The Way of Kings"Thanks, Dawn. I should've known that. I've heard great things about The Way of Kings! I think it's going to be a very busy new year with reading....
Dawn wrote: "The first one was.. Fine. I'm hoping the rest of the series move up into good / entertaining territory."The audio wasn't very good either. Spike didn't do it, for one thing.
I don't want to re-read Alloy of Law. I thought it was good, but I don't think of it was being on the same.. I want to say level, but I don't mean level as in writing level... as Mistborn. I think it would be a disappointment to read it after the epicness of Mistborn. It's just a totally different (good, but different) writing style and tone.
Dawn wrote: "I think I'll give Academ's Fury a try. Read a chapter or two, see if it catches me. If not... Rinse and repeat with something different."I powered through the first one of these and started the second. I ended up having to DNF it, sadly. I have had two major reading slumps this year and both followed or were during these books because I just didn't want to read them. I really enjoy the Dresden Files and I know the Academ series was his one great goal/love, but ... no. Sad to say, but no.

Started reading First King of Shannara, aka The First King of Middle Earth. Its interesting to see Gandalf and Aragorn before the fellowship... er... huh?... oh... well my mistake. That's embarrassing. Okay. Yeah. Its basically LotR part 2. But its my first Brooks book and I have read worse fan fiction. Believe me I have. I've been scarred for life from some bad fan fiction.
Hmmm... Just bought Alloy of Law on my Kindle, only to remember within the first 5 pages that I have already read this book! Must have been a library read back when I wasn't keeping good track. Anyone else have a terrible memory for book titles? Just me? Well, at least I have it now for a re-read when the next one comes out? This leaves me in a quandary as to what to actually read next. Ideas?
Ha ha Nienna. Shannara is very similar. I've heard that mentioned a lot. *shrugs* At least Brooks had an editor.

I used to do it all the time. The extra copies would get slush-piled to mom.
Now I'm using all sorts of things to minimize my double buying (but double reads are fine).
Earlier in the week I read The Valley of Fear and I enjoyed it more than some of the other Arthur Conan Doyle stories I've read. I'm now reading Timeless. So good! So far the final installment of the Parasol Protectorate is impressing me.
Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "Except comparing Shannara to Lord of the Rings is like comparing plaster paste to ice cream..."More like comparing Shannara to bad Lord of the Rings fan fiction... which can make plaster paste taste pretty good.

I'm also listening to The Ghost Bride. This is much different than I expected it to be. It's more like a historical fantasy than historical fiction. Really enjoying it though.
I don't know what to pick up as my next ebook or physical book. Feeling kinda blah about everything I pick up lately.
