As an imaginary breeze blew past, Professor Terin shivered into his fluffy blanket. It was simply too cold in the warm greenhouse. Suddenly, he began hacking violently. A corner of the blanket fell from his shoulder, as his body was wracked with coughing. Once the fit ended, he shakily extended an arm towards the fallen blanket.

Knock. Knock. Knock. Professor Terin frantically looked up with bloodshot eyes. “Wha’ in ‘da world?” he questioned. He stood up, only to pause as the blood painfully rushed to his head. After a moment, he managed to hobble over to the door without falling.

At the exact second he opened the door, he violently sneezed over all the first years. “I’d warn ‘ou to sta’ away, bu’ it’s alreaby too late,” he stated before shuffling over to clear the doorway. “You migh’ as well com’ in,” the professor said with a gesture to enter the greenhouse.

Once the disgusted students settled down, the professor woozily walked to the front of the classroom. As soon as he reached his chair, he sank down into its velvety warmth. “I am your new professor, Terin. I used to conduct research concerning flowering plants, but now I am here to teach you the basics of Herbology. Tobay…tobay,” he cleared his throat. “Today we’re discussing sneezewort. What can you tell me about sneezewort?”

“It’s nasty,” a Slytherin boy commented, while the girl beside him religiously scrubbed hand sanitizer on her exposed skin.

The professor frowned. “The plant itself does not sneeze. In fac’, it doesn’t even hab a nose. Here’s a sample of sneezewort.”



“Sneezewort is a perennial, flowering plant. It grows in meadows, wastelands, and ditches. Ib’s indigenous to the UK. It requires rekular watering. As an interesting side note, the plant’s growth displays the Fibonacci sequence. I recommen’ you look that up, if you have an in’erest in math.

“While sneezewort is, for the most par’, harmless, it is poisonous to livestock. If you ever care for cattle or sheep, it is wise to search for and remo’ this plant. It is easy enough to remove. You can simply pull the plant up from the roots or even burn it with a simple incin’rate sbell.” The professor began coughing up a mixture of mucus and saliva. Once he calmed down and breathed normally, he addressed the class.

“Seeing that I’m feeling ill, I’ll speed this up. Sneezewort can be ingested by humans. You can eat the leaves raw or dried. When you dry the plant, ib can be used as an ingredient for sneezing powder. I highly doubt any of you want to try that after today.” The professor sneezed again as though on cue. “Sneezewort is also an ingredient in the Befuddlement Draught. The plant inflames the brain and, therefore, is useful in potions that confuse the mind.”

As the professor rapidly barked out facts about sneezewort, he suddenly felt lightheaded. “Since you alre…” The professor swayed back and forth before hitting his head on the table. A few students rapidly stood up to help the professor.

Once he was sitting upright again, he slowly began speaking again. “I would have you replant them using mooncalf manure, but you can leave now. Don’t forget your homework. It’s due by Dec 15, 11:59 PM.” Before all of the students could file out, Professor Terin’s head was on his desk and a raucous snoring permeated throughout the greenhouse.

Estonia Dalion stepped out of the Potions classroom and greeted the students waiting in queue to enter. “Here are your gloves and masks. Wear your gloves upon entering, and for those of you who have a flower or pollen allergy make sure to wear your masks as a safety precaution,” she instructed as the materials were being passed on.

Trumpet-shaped floras of white, yellow and orange hues greeted the students. “I am Estonia Dalion, and I will be teaching you Potions I. For the next period, Professor Charme will take over. Today we’ll be covering Angel’s Trumpet Draught. On your tables are three examples of the potion’s main ingredient.” Estonia picked up one of the orange-coloured flowers and walked towards her table with the upside-down flower swinging in one hand. “These are Angel’s Trumpets. Pretty harmless if you look at them,” she said, waving the flower like a bell. “But they can cause fatal damages if ingested both by humans and animals,” she added as she turned to face the class. “Can anybody tell us why?”

Half of the class’ hands shot up in the air. “Yes, Miss Jin?” Estonia nodded towards a Hufflepuff student.

“It is because, not just the flowers, but all parts of an Angel’s Trumpet plant are poisonous,” the young girl, whose jet black hair was up in a messy bun, answered.

“Correct! Ten points for Hufflepuff!” Estonia started walking by the aisle as she continued,“This factual information also gives us a big hint as to what kind of potion will be made if an Angel’s Trumpet is used as an ingredient. Although, through deeper research and experiment, someone might be able to make medicines out of it. Maybe,” she added and shrugged as she admits, herself, that there were tons of possibilities that the plant may be useful than it has ever been. “But as of today, the only patented usage of this plant is for making poisons.”

With a wave of her wand, a stack of paper flew out of the top shelf from the back of the room, cut itself evenly in two sets and floated by Estonia’s side. One by one, the papers flew sideward every row, landing on each student’s table as she walked back towards her desk. “Before we start brewing this draught, I request all of you to read these guidelines and sign in agreement above the bar placed at the bottom of the page. This is to ensure that no harm will occur towards anybody as we study this potion. Once you’ve signed it, pass them forward and we’ll move on to the lesson,” she elaborated.

Estonia waited for every student to finish reading and signing the class’ contract until everyone has passed theirs.“Has everyone turned them in?” Estonia asked and stood up, scanning the class to check if she missed more papers. “Looks like we’re good,” she announced, seeing that there were no papers left out. “Alright! Now, back to our lesson.” She gave her wand another wave and tapped against an antique projector placed on top of her table. The curtains slowly rolled down in automation to dim the lights inside the room as a photo of an upside-down trumpet-shaped bottle flashed on the white cloth covering the black board.

“This is what the Angel’s Trumpet Draught looked like when it was presented to the public. Just like the flower, the design of the potion’s flask is harmless at first glance, but if you look closely,” Estonia instructed, and zoomed the image in as she tapped her wand against the cloth.“Take note of the angel engraved on the flask. Does anybody recognize this type of angel? It is the type that is often used in Victorian funerary monuments. It’s a very minor detail at one point, but it gives you an idea of what kind of potion it’s holding once you are able to familiarize yourself with that small detail. The potion we will be brewing is, as a matter of fact, a poison. That’s why we have to make a written agreement before we start trying to make it.

“As for checking if your potions were brewed correctly, worry not. Because there’s another way of checking that, aside from making somebody drink it,” she giggled as she saw a worrisome look on some of the students’ faces.

She gave her wand a huge waved and sent the curtains tied up again, the projector turned off, and the lights, well lit. “The instructions are on page two hundred and eight of your textbooks.”

BREWING INSTRUCTIONS
1. Put 6 cups of water in to your cauldron
2. Heat cauldron until water boils
3. Crush Angel’s Trumpet leaves using mortar and pestle
4. Put crushed leaves into the cauldron.
5. Stir 5 times, clockwise
6. Leave to brew for 15 minutes
7. Add 1 cup of dried moss
8. Stir 3 times, clockwise
9. Leave for another 5 minutes
10. Tear 4 Angel’s Trumpet flowers into small pieces
NOTE: Flowers must be torn ONLY by hand.
11. Add torn flowers into cauldron
12. Stir counter-clockwise until the potion turns pearl blue.

Professor Charme faced her first year students. They were at their usual working tables, ready for the day's lesson.
"Good morning, class! Today, we are going to brew Wiggenweld Potion. Get your copy of Magical Drafts and Potions, so we can start," the teacher announced, smiling contentedly.



"Wiggenweld Potion is a healing potion with the power to awaken a person from a magically-induced sleep. The Draught of Living Death has this effect. Wiggenweld Potion is the antidote for the Draught of Living Death. The Wiggenweld Potion is very effective to awaken the victim of this dreadful draught, like what happened to Princess Aurora. Are you ready for a quick story?" she said, a lovely grin on her face.
The students nodded eagerly. They were always excited at Professor Charme's funny stories.

"Well, it's a common love story that happened during the Medieval times. There was a girl named Aurora who was adopted by a Hag family, who treated her badly. On her eighteenth birthday, she was discovered as the only remaining descendant of the king, which made her a princess. This news made her adopted family very happy (they asked for lots of gold as compensation for keeping her all those times) except her adopted sister, Leticia. Letty was always jealous of Aurora, with her beauty and intelligence. So she plotted a devious plan. She tainted a spindle with a drop of Draught of Living Death and tricked the princess into pricking her finger on it, sending her into a deep sleep.

"The king announced that whoever cured the princess would be rewarded with untold riches. Prince Philip was a very intelligent wizard, a prince of the nearby kingdom. He went to help by smearing his lips with Wiggenweld Potion, then kissed the princess. She suddenly awoke and when they looked at each other, they fell in love instantly. Instead of the riches, Prince Philip got the princess as a reward. They got married and had lots of children."

The sigh of her female students brought an amused smile to the professor.

"Oh! It is like the story of Sleeping Beauty," a lovely, Hufflepuff girl blurted out dreamily.

"Sleepy what? Oh! You mean, the Muggle fairytale. Well, the Muggle stories are often based on our own magical stories, though they are not aware that they are real life stories," the teacher explained.

The students gaped at her in shock at the revelation. Some of them are Muggleborns and they were amazed that their fairytales were true stories.

"Ok, enough for the stories. Now, check the instructions in your book for the ingredients, get them from the supply closet, and start brewing. I know that this potion maybe a bit complicated for you. I will not expect a perfect potion; your perseverance to try brewing it will get you a good grade," the professor announced, hearing the sigh of relief of the whole class.

1. Prepare your cauldron, mortar and pestle and the necessary ingredients.
2. Put the chizpurfle fangs, mint, mandrake and wolfsbane into the mortar. Grind them into a fine mixture using the pestle. Add five measures of the crushed mixture to your cauldron.
3. One drop at a time, add salamander blood until the potion turns red. Then, add horklump juice and stir until the potion turns orange.
4. Again one drop at a time, add salamander blood until it turns yellow. Then, add billywig sting slime and stir until the potion turns green.
5. Once again, add salamander blood (one drop at a time) until it turns turquoise. Then, add boom berry juice and stir until the potion turns indigo.
