You are now in the Classes thread! The homework for each class will be posted on the date indicated below. No two classes overlap, so all homework must be submitted (through comments and lots and lots of spoiler tags) by 11:59PM of the day before the next class. So, for example, you can only submit your Charms homework until 11:59PM of Dec. 5. This is to avoid clutter in the thread and so that it would be easier for me to check your answers. If you have registered here, any points you incur before Sorting will still be included in your respective House points.

Classroom Rules
1) ALWAYS, ALWAYS, always put your answers in spoiler tags . The more, the better (but don't make it too cluttered, please, and make your handwriting legible!!)
2) I trust you students not to cheat. This is the first of many times I shall test your honesty. Do not disappoint me and Prof. Cary.
3) All extra credit questions are optional, but they will only be marked if all the main homework questions are answered.

Lesson:

The teacher swiftly enters the room and strides to the desk at the front. She gently taps her desk to attract your attention. Eventually the class comes to a hush and the witch begins to speak.

"Thank you. Welcome to Charms. I am your new teacher, Professor Dering. Now, since I'm sure you are all ready to begin, we shall get straight into it.

Charms is a very complex subject, and a very powerful talent to gain. If performed incorrectly, it can have incredibly dangerous consequences. However I intend to teach you correctly. It may seem like a bunch of words combined with a wave of a wand, but Charms is far more. You must have the will to learn, and the ability to completely concentrate on what it is you wish to accomplish.

The chant helps the caster to focus on the task. In some cases, when the caster's willpower is strong, the charm will still work even if the words are mispronounced or even completely forgotten. Therefore, it is very important to believe in what you are doing.

The wand movements are a means of channelling the magic from the caster to an area. It is not just wands that can be used, it has been known for amulets, staffs and weapons to channel magic. However we will be using wands."

Professor Dering smiles gently before continuing, she takes a look around the class to ensure everyone is paying attention.

“Today we will be learning about the Cheering Charm. Can anyone guess what this charm may do?” the professor asked the class. A small Hufflepuff raised her hand in the back of the classroom. Professor Dering pointed to the girl. “Yes?’

“Ummm….does it cheer you up?” she asked timidly. The professor grinned, to make her point.

“Exactly,” she aimed her wand at the board, making the outline for the day appear.

Cheering Charm
Incantation: fortunatus
Pronunciation: for-too-NAH-tus
Purpose: to cheer a person up and make them happy
History: Invented by Felix Summerbee in the 1400’s. His friend had been feeling down in the dumps for a week and Felix created this charm to cheer him up.

“Be sure to copy this down in your notes. Once you have copied it down, I’d like you all to partner up. We are going to practice this charm on each other. Everybody ready? Good. Now first without your wands. Fortunatus. Make sure you enunciate very clearly. Ahhhh, great job everyone. Now with your wand in hand, we will practice the motion. Raise your wand up, and then point to the person you wish to cast the charm upon. Very well. Now combine them together.” The students faces were contorted in concentration. The classroom became noisy as twenty students all attempted to cast the spell. One student began to giggle in the corner. Smiles crept across the students faces. Even the Slytherins were cracking a smile.

“The spell only lasts for ten minutes, so it should wear off shortly. While you wait for it, I suggest writing down your homework questions so you can have that completed before next time.”

Being the usual slave of his pea-sized bladder, Aaron had to went to the loo when Professor Dering asked the class to partner up. It came off as no surprise that when he came back the only available student is the one person everybody and their pet cats wouldn't partner with in this kind of exercise: Harvey Specter.

No one ever saw the Specter kid laugh. No one. He broods, he glares, he smirks, he makes you feel inferior but he doesn't do smiling. It's like it causes him physical pain to smile.

Aaron got his wand from his desk and walked to his partner.

"Are you ready?" he asked.

Harvey shrugged, stood up straight and glared as if he is facing a fire-breathing dragon instead of an unfortunate Pea-sized Bladder Kid with a wand.

Bracing himself from the humiliation and the futility of this Cheering Charm's effectivity on Harvey, he raised his wand and pointed it at him.

"Fortunatus!"

Immediately, he averted his eyes from his partner to the person in his right direction. It happened to be Donna who was being, well, Donna. She was wiggling her eyebrows conspiratorially and pointing her lips to some direction.

"What?" Aaron asked.

"Oh for God's sake," she started. "Be a dear, hold this precious wand for me." she asked her partner. She then put her hands on Aaron's head and moved it at Harvey's direction.

To his surprised, his partner who doesn't smile, like, ever was smiling. Sheepishly! The bastard.

Nope, he isn't. The effect didn't wore off even until lunchtime. Harvey was smiling and it was weirding everybody out.

Monday morning, and Monique's friend Buddy comes inside the classroom looking glum. Buddy's usual twinkling eyes were cast down, and he dragged his feet with every step that he took as he made his way across the room to where Monique sat. Finally, he slumped into the desk beside Monique and dropped his backpack on the floor. He proceeded to hide his face on his arms on the table in front of him.

"What's up, Buddy?" Monique cautiously asked her friend. "What's with the long face?"

"Oh, you mean, aside from the fact that everyone in our book club knows about this Harry Potter thingy and those spells and sh*t? Nothing, nothing's wrong at all," Buddy said, in a muffled voice. The answer was meant to sound off as sarcastic, but Monique detected the slightest sadness in his tone.

Monique didn't answer right away. She knew about this book club that her friend is so fond of, and she knows how much it means to him. She also knew, without an iota of doubt, that it's breaking his heart not to be able to participate in whatever is going on with their discussion.

So, Monique concentrated. She thought of Buddy in his happy mood, and focused on achieving that cheery, bubbly temperament that Buddy always has whenever he talks of his book club. She raised her wand discreetly from her bag and whispered, determinedly: "Fortunatus!" and pointed her slender wand to Buddy's back.

One, two, three seconds.

She waited.

And then, without getting up from his slumped position, Buddy started snickering. He raised his head, faced Monique and said, "Oh my goodness, can you imagine me like this? There's nothing a good dose of butterbeer can't fix! And I just need to read the book that everyone else is reading, that's all!" And then proceeded to laugh at himself, shaking his head at finding the solution to his own problem.

Buddy reached into his backpack and, pulling out a dilapidated copy of Harry Potter and The Gall Stone said, "Perhaps I should start reading good ole Harry Potter then, eh?" with a grin. (hide spoiler)]

EC 1

Grace is seating in front of her computer at work daydreaming about the beautiful beach she has just been to last weekend. She is experiencing post vacation blues and having a hard time concentrating at whatever she's doing. To rest her depressed mind for a bit, she logs on to her Goodreads account and sees a notification on the Hogwarts Class thread on the TFG page.
There is a class for performing the Cheering Charm. Upon reading, she immediately thinks of how awesome it'll feel to be cheerful for the next ten minutes. She decides to cast the charm upon herself.
She gets her wand in her office pedestal, closes her eyes, thinks of the tranquility she felt while surrounded by the beauty of nature in her vacation destination, raises the wand, and points to herself while muttering (so her officemates won't hear) Fortunatus.
The result is immediate. She feels light and happy for the first time since getting back to the real world. She feels the like she can conquer any tasks at hand. And most importantly, she feels like her cheerful little self again.
After ten minutes, the charm wears off and she goes back to feeling her post vacation blues.

They can’t be serious, thought Ycel. It’s the start of term and she’s not quite sure if she missed the owl post. Her FB and Twitter accounts were flooded with posts from fellow First Years showing off their Hogwarts letters of acceptance. Nonetheless, she dutifully showed up at Platform 9 ¾ and almost missed the train. A sprightly witch (codename Deputy Head Mistress Blue) greeted the First Years when they alighted at Hogsmeade (somehow Ycel had a queer sense that there’s something wrong with this picture) and asked them to sing (gasp!) something about scabby knees. Apparently, they can’t complete their enrolment without singing this silly song in front of everybody. A really brave muggle stepped forward to start the ball rolling followed by an upstart who claimed to be a Slytherin when they haven’t even been sorted yet (view spoiler)[(what a show off, he can’t even rhyme) (hide spoiler)]. Then everybody tried to outdo those who went before them and Ycel felt her well-developed sense of insecurity kicking in (view spoiler)[(even Veronica sang with much rhyme and gusto, doing loads better than the Slytherin wannabe) (hide spoiler)]. Ycel felt herself fainting anytime soon, until a weirdo from nowhere (view spoiler)[who looked like he was dragged to Hogwarts kicking and screaming (hide spoiler)] sang his crazy version of the enrolment song and broke the tension summat(view spoiler)[(not a typo; think Yorkshire/West Country accent) (hide spoiler)]. Everybody was starting to have a jolly good time until Deputy Head Mistress Cary joined Deputy Head Mistress Blue and dumped assignments one on top of the other (on day one!) when the newcomers haven’t even had a chance to look at the Great Hall. If this is how the rest of the year goes, Ycel thought, I’m toast. The weary First Years were dumped into the classroom unceremoniously by the DHMs (and without the traditional banquet in the Great Hall, mind you---(view spoiler)[what slave drivers! (hide spoiler)]) and were asked to perform a cheering charm (which Ycel sorely needed, what with all the tension and having had no real food during the train ride (view spoiler)[except for Chocolate Frogs and Every Flavor Beans (hide spoiler)]). DHM Blue showed the groggy First Years how the cheering charm is performed and asked them to pair up and practice the charm on each other. Everyone’s eyebrows were furrowed in concentration, wands raised, and a chorus of “Fortunatus!” rang in the room and everyone broke into a lovely smile. Angus suddenly stretched out his hands so that Monique's wand was hit and pointed to herself. One, two, three. She started cackling. He raised his eyebrow, faced Monique, and laughed as well, "Oh my gosh. It looks like you had a good dose of rum and coke last night!" He then proceeded to laugh soundlessly at himself, shaking his head at finding the solution to his own problem.

Monique reached into his backpack and, pulling out a copy of Harry Potter and The Gall Stone, which is probably Jonathan's, said, still laughing hysterically, "Perhaps we should start buddy reading good ole Harry Potter then?"

Cheering up was just what Tina needed that day, and she was glad that it was the Charms lesson for that morning for their first week at Hogwarts. She had a hundred and one things running through her mind and she was thisclose to panicking and stressing out because she bit off more than she can chew. If she didn't like this class so much, she would've skipped this just so she can work on the other things she needed to work on.

When Professor Dering asked them to pair up, she turned to Mae, who sat beside her with the usual grin on her face.

"You okay?" she asked.

Tina shrugged. "Let's get this over with."

They brought out their wands and started practicing, until Tina thought of something. "You know what's the real downer about this charm?"

"Downer about a Cheering Charm? Huh?" Mae asked, confused.

"Why does it only last for ten minutes?" Tina waved her free hand in the air. "Just ten? Can't it last longer? Like I don't know, thirty? Won't it be more useful?"

Mae chuckled. "Oh, you are stressed. Come on, let's practice."

Tina went first. She pointed her wand and said, "Fortunatus!" to Mae, who just looked back at her.

"Am I supposed to laugh now?"

Tina looked at her wand and shook her head. "Wait, I think I did it wrong. Let me try again."

"If you fail again, we can always talk about those other things that make us laugh," Mae said conspiratorially, which made Tina smile.

"Shhh, we're not supposed to talk about that here," she replied. "Okay one more time." Tina raised her wand, pointed it at Mae and said, "Fortunatus!" She tried hard not to make a face or look at her friend in the eye because she knew she'd giggle.

This time, Mae laughed out loud. "Okay I think you did it. My turn!"

Mae got it right the first time (it was the wand-raising that Tina forgot the first time she tried) and before long, they were laughing and giggling, just like how they do when they have their long gossip sessions.

The charm wore off soon enough, and Tina felt a different kind of air in the classroom, like it was lighter and brighter. Like everyone was happier...or well, all cheered up. Even she felt happier even if it had been way past ten minutes since Mae cast the spell.

Tina looked around the room, and then back at Mae and said, "I take it back. I think the charm really lasts for more than ten minutes."

"Why do you say so?"

"Because cheering someone else up is enough to cheer you up." With that, Tina smiled, feeling less stressed and definitely happier than when the class started.

“For-too-NAH-tus” Tin exclaimed, over and over. That’s it. Loosen your tongue. Pucker your lips once you hit “tus”. Well, this isn’t so bad Tin said, but better take no chances and practice some more. Tin was so wrapped up in getting the pronunciation right that she failed to notice that everyone was on their feet and most of them had partners already! Eeep!

Tin looked around the room and spotted only one boy without a partner yet. So, she strode on over to him and asked if they could be partners. He introduced himself as Eddison Tollett. To which a Slytherin girl snickered to. Dolorous Edd, Tin heard her say. Tin soon found out that he is an especially dour fellow. He kept on muttering things like: “We are all gonna die.” Or “The night is dark and full of terrors.” “I guess I’ve got my work cut out for me.” said Tin. No matter, I’ll take the challenge!

Okay, raise, and point. “for-too-nah-tus!” The Edd’s lips twitched just slightly. Almost a smile, but not yet. Concentrate Tin, you can do this! I am going to cheer this boy up if it’s the last thing I’d do! Again. Raise and Point. “For-too-nah-tus!” The boy’s face cracked into a huge grin. Oh my god! I did it! Tin said. I actually did it! Horay! O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!'

"This is the best!" Bennard whispered to himself as he and his fellow students hurried out of the Charms classroom and towards the Great Hall for lunch.

Bennard was very happy not only because of the Cheering charm that his partner executed perfectly on him but also because he is now a full-fledged student of Hogwarts. Nothing can bring his hopes down.

Except maybe Troll and his mates who are lounging at the entrance to the Great Hall. Yes, his name is Troll. The story about Troll's name involves fire whisky, a seedy pub, and an alcoholic father who lost a bet to a one-eyed dwarf.

Anyway, before Bennard can escape to his room, Troll has already noticed him.

"OI!" shouted Troll as he approached Bennard. "Why are you in a hurry? Aren't you eating lunch?"

"Well, Troll, I'm not really hungry." Bennard lied through his teeth.

"Really? I was thinking that maybe you were just trying to avoid me?"

"Troll, come on, you're as large as a real troll and half as smart. No one can avoid you." Bennard said, instantly regretting it.

"You cheeky bastard!" Troll said as he charged like a bull towards Bennard.

Bennard instinctively grabbed for his wand and tried to cast the first spell that came to mind.

"Fortuno! No, I Mean - Fortunatos!" Bennard said while still fumbling with his wand.

A loud bang was heard accompanied by lots of smoke and a mob of students and teachers tried to go to the center of the commotion.

Bennard is seen lying on the ground, coughing, with a blackened face and burnt hair. He was missing his eyebrows.

Across from him is Troll, laughing hysterically, laughing like there's no tomorrow in a way no one has ever seen someone laugh before.

"Blimey, what's with Troll?" asked a student.

Professor Dering approached Bennard with an expression that usually does not appear on her gentle face.

"It's a Cheering charm. I think I did it wrong." Bennard said.

"Merlin's beard, I think Troll is now peeing his pants." another student shouted and the mob erupted in laughter, joining with the laughter of Troll.

Professor Dering, amidst the commotion, ordered two students to bring Troll to the hospital wing. After, she looked at Bennard and said:

"Meet me at my office tonight. You've got four weeks detention." Professor Dering said, "Can't even do a Cheering Charm right. Hmph!" And the professor walked away briskly.

Louize snuggled into her winter coat. It is such a good day for a Hogsmeade visit. This is the last visit for this term before they are sent home for the Christmas break. Yesterday, Professor Dering taught them the Cheering charm. She was not able to cast the spell rightly so during class, her partner only ended up smirking for the last 10 minutes until the bell rang. But today, she’s going to try again, and she knows exactly where.

Everybody seems busy enough. The shops are full, students are either stacking supplies for the duration of the break, or it is their last attempt in buying some Christmas presents. The Three Broomsticks is jammed too. Students are happily sipping their last butterbeers for the season. Louize made a mental note to grab one too before heading back to the castle. For now, no one must see her slip away.

The snow encrusted road was tricky, but she made it here without any incident. She had to make the long route back to the Castle grounds so no one will see her. If she fails with the spell casting, no one would laugh at her, and she will not get detention… hopefully.

Looming before her is the Whomping Willow, the mere sight of it made her cringe with fright. If anyone needs cheering, this tree needs it more than anything does. Everybody avoids this tree, it has… attitude. Louize walked silently as she could, she needs to get nearer to make sure the spell hits the trunk and not just the branches, but far enough that the tree will not be able to bash her. “For-too-NAH-tus, For-too-NAH-tus,” Louize chants into her head. She has to say it right, and loud. She guessed that as big as the willow tree is, it has to be really loud.

She took her wand out, pointed it at the unsuspecting tree; and with the flick of her wrist, she shouted, “For-too-NAH-tus”!

For a moment, nothing seems to be happening. Then the tree seems to be jiggling on itself, the trunk was bending over, and the branches are swaying from side to side. “Oh dear,” thought Louize. “Did I just make it angry? Well, it wasn’t laughing, so it must be angry then. But it’s jiggling. Do trees do that? Oh well! Maybe I said it wrong, or I flicked my wrist too soon.”

Louize, turned and started walking back the way she went. It’s a long walk back to Hogsmeade after all, no time to dilly dally. She haven't walked that far from the Whomping Willow’s sight, when it started throwing it’s full head back and smack its branches on the ground. Louize looked back and promised to herself to come back after the break and try again.

“Alright class,” said Professor Dering. “Now that I’ve explained the Cheering Charm, I want you to practice the charm on the person beside you.” Ronnie cast a sideways glance at Fiona Fairville. “Oh no,” she inwardly groaned. In her opinion, Fiona was the most miserable girl at Hogwarts. She had been the target of Malfoy’s derisive comments about her Muggle background. Once, Ronnie overheard him say to her, “You don’t belong in Hogwarts. You’re just the token student from the wizard trash community.” Fiona had walked away in near tears.

She nervously turned to Fiona and asked, “Do you want to go first?”

“Okay.” Fiona took the wand in her hand and faced Ronnie. For a few seconds, she stood very still. Then, she aimed the wand at Ronnie and with two fluid waves, she said, “Fortunatus!” It didn’t take long for Ronnie to feel the change. It started with a warm, fuzzy feeling enveloping her and pretty soon she was giggling. “Wow, you know how you get after drinking a couple of butterbeers? Well, that’s how I’m feeling right now!” Ronnie giggled.

Still giggling, she took her wand and pointed it at Fiona. “Now it’s my turn!” Without a moment’s notice, she uttered the incantation, “Fortunatus!” A cloud of grey smoke formed between them. Within seconds, it was gone. “Omigosh, Fiona! Are you alright?”

“I’m okay. I don’t feel any different. Maybe the charm’s not strong enough.“ Fiona said with a weak smile. Ronnie watched Fiona hoping that maybe the charm was just a little delayed. Nothing. Fiona shrugged her shoulders and went back to writing down the notes on the board.

Ronnie stared at her notebook. “How could I have been such an idiot! Charms affect people’s lives, even if only for a few minutes. How could I have been so insensitive! Now, I’ve actually made Fiona feel worse than before.”

Quietly, Ronnie stood and moved behind Fiona’s chair. She aimed the wand at the hunched figure. She focused all her thoughts on Fiona. How she would walk despondently through the corridor with downcast eyes. How the tears welled up in her eyes as she walked past the snickering Malfoy and company. How she never seemed to have any friends. Ronnie waved her wand twice and, under her breath, she muttered, “Fortunatus!”The wand made a little jerk in her hand. Ronnie looked up anxiously at Fiona. She hadn’t moved at all. Nothing again.

Crestfallen, Ronnie went back to her chair and picked up her quill. Fiona turned to her half-smiling and said, “You know, I’ve been thinking. Malfoy’s wrong. There are no token students here. Professor McGonagall sent me the letter because she knows I belong here! Besides, I got the Charm to work, didn’t I?” Fiona was smiling now and her eyes shone brightly. “Let’s work on your Charm after class.”

The door to a second floor classroom creaked open as a young man entered the room. He peered in the dark room and then walked in slowly. Then he snapped his fingers and the curtains opened to show tall windows lined across the wall opposite to the door. Light immediately filled the classroom and the man walked towards the large, oak desk. A trail of luggage of different shapes and sizes followed the man into the room and rested themselves around the desk.

The man was rather lithe and appeared to have unkempt black hair. His blue shirt accompanied by a sweater vest was not tucked in and he also wore browline glasses. A bell rang and the man opened a briefcase and quickly grabbed some papers. Students began to enter the classroom chatting excitedly about beginning their first year at Hogwarts. The man adjusted his glasses and smiled at students taking their seats. Once the students had settled down, the man began to speak, “Hello everyone, my name is Professor Walter Liao and welcome to Hogwarts! I attended and graduated from Hogwarts. Then I did some work at the Ministry before coming here to teach. Also, welcome to Transfiguration; you are about to embark on an amazing journey of magic and fun. I see you’re all ready for the first lesson.”

Professor Liao readjusted his glasses. "Today, we will cover the practical uses as well as the dangers of this branch of magic. Now, can anyone think of how you can use Transfiguration in your daily life, outside of the classroom?”

Several students raised their hands and the professor said, “Just shout out what you think Transfiguration could help you with.” The professor readied his hand to write on the board.

“Food!”

“Supplies!”

“Cleaning!”

“Excellent answers!” Professor Liao exclaimed, “You can transform objects into food or vanish your garbage with Transfiguration. Don’t worry too much about the applications of Transfiguration. You will go in more depth as you progress in this branch of magic.” The professor took his wand out of its holster sitting on his belt. “How about a little demonstration?” He smiled. Then the professor grabbed an apple and pointed his wand at it. In a short moment, the apple slowly transformed into a slice of bread. Professor Liao took a bite out of the bread and several students gasped in surprise. “Cool and useful, isn’t it?” The professor chuckled at the response of the class.

He continued his lesson, “Time for the important part of today’s lesson: dangers of Transfiguration. I need everyone to pay attention to this part. While Transfiguration can be very useful, it can also very dangerous.” The professor began writing on the chalkboard:

“So, these are mistakes that can happen in Transfiguration and as you can see, there are three types of mistakes: dangerous to humans, dangerous to animals, and non-dangerous. I can tell you now, partial Transfiguration is never nice. On top of all that, human Transfiguration is also very difficult perform and even harder to reverse. I bet you all are wondering how to not make these mistakes,” the professor continued his lesson “Here are some guidelines I follow and I suggest you should too.” Professor Liao began to write on the blackboard again:

- Ensure your wand is not damaged or broken in any way.
- Visualize the end result of your intended Transfiguration.
- Recite the incantation perfectly and make sure there no errors in pronunciation.

The professor sat at his oak desk, reading a magazine with TRANSFIGURATION TODAY printed on the cover. The image on the cover would change every few seconds, demonstrating Transfiguration. The bell rang and he continued reading, his eyes darting side to side. Students began to enter the classroom, filling the room with the sound of chatter. Several moments later, the chatter subsided and the professor put the magazine down. He rose from his seat and walked over to the blackboard. “Hello, class. I hope everyone is enjoying their first week of autumn. I’ve noticed it has gotten much cooler,” Professor Liao said.

“Anyways, let’s begin today’s lesson. Although it seems that Transfiguration or magic in general is unrestricted and boundless, that is untrue. There are limits to what can be done in Transfiguration. The law that outlines those limits is called Gamp’s Law of Elemental Transfiguration,” he paused, “The law says that there are five principal exceptions. Would anyone like to guess?”

Several hands rose. The professor glanced around and pointed at a bespectacled boy in the first row, “Yes, Mr. McKenzie.”

“Food,” the Ravenclaw boy answered. A piece of chalk rose and wrote the answer on the board.

“But Professor Liao said that you can make food with Transfiguration!” a Hufflepuff boy exclaimed in retort.

The professor smiled and said “Mr. McKenzie is right, food is one of the exceptions. I’ll elaborate; what this means is that food cannot be conjured from thin air. You may, however, transform one food into another food, multiply food that you already have, or enlarge it. You may also summon food provided you know its approximate location and you are certain it still exists.” The chalk listed the conditions mentioned by Professor Liao on the board.

“The second exception is money and precious metals. Although it is true you can multiply money through using the Doubling Charm and whatnot, the copies will have no real value. Also, the Ministry has outlawed counterfeiting money and the goblins at Gringotts have countercharms and detection spells to test money. So I would highly suggest against trying to multiply money. Like food, you cannot conjure money and precious metals from thin air. Even the Philosopher’s stone cannot create gold out of nothing; it transforms ordinary metals into gold, but it has been destroyed. Now, the next few exceptions are not certain, as it is a current research topic of the Department of Mysteries,” the professor paused to catch his breath.

He resumed his lesson, “Many wizards and witches believe the last three exceptions are definitely metaphysical; meaning that they exist but cannot be seen. The last three exceptions are believed to be love, knowledge/information, life, space, or time. Just like the first two exceptions, the last three exceptions cannot be conjured from thin air. However, you do not need to worry about the metaphysical exceptions too much. It becomes very complex and is far beyond the level of many wizards and witches. So to summarize, please refer to the blackboard.” Professor Liao pointed at the board.

"Welcome! Welcome! Please take a seat!" Professor Swann called out to the first years as they flooded into the classroom. She wore a broad, welcoming smile as she watched the students file into the room. After the majority of the students were seated, she began.

"Hello class! I'm you're new professor- Professor Swann." The professor scanned the students, trying to take in each of their faces. "Now, my rules are very simple, and are basically the exact same as the previous rules, so we won't be spending much time on that." Loosening her smile, a hand caught her attention. She nodded at the dark-haired Slytherin girl to speak.

"Professor... Swann." She hesitated a bit before continuing, "Because you're new and everything, will we be proceeding with class at all, today?" A few students smiled, obviously in hopes of not having a 'real' class today.

"Ahaha, no, I'm sorry. Today we'll be learning about Dzou Yen!" Peering at the students, she realized the name hadn't sparked any already existing knowledge in any of the students, and didn't bother to ask if they'd known anything about him. "Dzou Yen was a famous Chinese alchemest." She flicked her wand towards the board behind her, where an image now appeared.



Immediately after the image appeared, a hand shot up. Professor Swann turned her attention to the black-haired Ravenclaw girl. "Oh! I've seen him on a chocolate frog card!" she eagerly called out, then slowly pulled her hand back down from the air.

"Yes! Yes indeed," Professor Swann chuckled. "Dzou Yen is indeed featured on a chocolate frog card. He was born in 305 BC. This means he was alive during the Zhou Dynasty's final years." Professor Swann paused, letting the students finish staring at the picture before continuing.

"Has anyone heard of the Five Elements theory?" Professor Swann asked, with only two hands rising. Frowning a bit, she added, "What about Yin and Yang?" A satisfying smile crossed her face as nearly every hand was now raised. "Well, Dzou Yen was credited for refining both of those theories. In addition, he's considered as a founder of Chinese scientific thought."

Professor Swann flicked her wand once more to reveal the words, 'Qi: Spring and Autumn Period'."In the Spring and Autumn Period, he lived in the state of Qi." While the students turned their focus to the board again, the professor took a glance at a clock on the wall behind her. "Oh, goodness. I didn't realize what time it was!" With the last flick of her wand, the homework questions appeared on the board. While the students pulled out their rolls of parchment, she quickly added, "For the record, he died in 240 BC!" Even though the students were already beginning to write, she announced anyway, "Please write the questions down! I look forward to next class!" She smiled at the students while they hastily scribbled down the questions, the bell ringing just moments after they'd completed writing down the questions.
