Again, David, you did not link to your review of Nyphron Rising, but to the book itself, here is your review: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Joseph | 2433 comments I finished Seven Sorcerers by John R. Fultz (third in a trilogy I highly recommend) and decided to close out the year with some Star Wars, beginning with Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories by John Jackson Miller.

We still love you.

I'm trying to finish my last book of 2013 (I have a massive podcast backlog to catch up on, so once I hit 36, I'm going to try to get that down). I finished His Majesty's Dragon and really liked it and also finished An Astronaut's Guide to Life on Earth: What Going to Space Taught Me About Ingenuity, Determination, and Being Prepared for Anything (it was also pretty good).

My last book is (for now) Odd Thomas, as recommended by a friend, but I have to confess that I'm not all that grabbed by the beginning. I've started it twice and am unimpressed...I settled down today to try a 3rd start but felt like a nap was a better use of my time...

No, no you are not, but we forgive you anyway. Everyone has a bad day or two.

Jennifer Swerbensky | 75 comments I'm done with The Lies of Locke Lamora, and I really had nothing to worry about. I loved it. I figured I'd end the year on a lighter, easier note and give the Mortal Instruments a try so I'm reading City of Bones

message 109: by Chris (new)

Chris Hudson I am currently reading The Goldfinch by Donna Tartt, and plan on reading Blood Meridian, or the Evening Redness in the West by Cormac McCarthy after that.

How about giving some other City of Bones or City of Bones a try?

Hudson (bostonrich) | 20 comments Corey wrote: "just finished reading the republic of thieves, well worth the long wait between books"

Corey I am about half way through and I think it is my least favorite of the Bastard books. Does it pick up in the 2nd half? I liked the back story with Sabetha, but the overall storyline seems somewhat slow. I am liking it overall, but I really loved the first two.

I have a real problem with the fact that he never solves the poison, and I think will use it as a way for him to use Locke in doing all different things like the second books is about pirates, and the third is about politics. I really wish he wrap that up as quick as possible.

message 113: by Hudson (new)

Hudson (bostonrich) | 20 comments Yes, I'm not too thrilled with the politics or the play...

I read Blood Meridian a couple of months back, very tough read but worth it!

I've never read any Harry Bosch books, perhaps I'll give them a try in a bit, the other City of Bones does look interesting, I might just have to add it to my ever growing list of books to read.

Joseph | 2433 comments Finished Lost Tribe of the Sith: The Collected Stories and now it's time (not without a little trepidation) for Revan by Drew Karpyshyn.

message 118: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jennyc89) | 116 comments I'm now reading The Rose and the Thorn. It's possibly my last book of the year!

message 119: by Bryan (new)

Bryan Alexander I just started Gene Wolfe's The Land Across, which is lovely so far.

Ctgt | 329 comments Just started Three Parts Dead

message 121: by Michele (new)

Michele | 1154 comments Finishing up my reread of C.J. Cherryh Fortress series, which I love and haven't read for a long time. I'm into the fifth (last) book now Fortress of Ice which was written a bit after the first four and not my favorite but hey, gotta finish up the story right?

After this I have no idea what I'll read next, except the club pick, but I'm feeling like maybe I need a murder mystery infusion after a whole lotta fantasy.

message 122: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Xu (kxu65) | 1081 comments I just got Paper Towns from the local library, can't wait to start reading.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments I finished up Glasshouse by Charles Stross. I liked it, and it was the first book of his that I'd read. Anyone have any other Stross recommendations for me?

Rule 34, which was a book club pick a couple of years ago.

Jenny (Reading Envy) (readingenvy) | 2898 comments Kevin wrote: "Rule 34, which was a book club pick a couple of years ago..."

Oh yeah! I lemmed that one.

message 126: by Serendi (new)

Serendi | 848 comments I like his Laundry stories. They do have some gruesome stuff, but they have a lot of fun stuff as well. Each one is based on the style of a spy novelist (I *think* Len Deighton is the first one; someone I haven't read, anyway; one's James Bond, another Modesty Blaise, etc.). I found Rule 34 kinda hard to take also.

Haven't read his Merchant Princes series, but it sounds good. It's being reissued after editing because he's doing a second series, so I figure I'll get the new versions (don't think they're out in the US yet, but I believe they are in the UK).

I quite enjoyed Three Parts Dead, very interesting mix of fantasy and legal thriller....magicians as specialists in contract law. I look forward to reading the next novel in the series.

message 128: by Lena (new)

Lena Fickle (unicronq) | 16 comments I started Rain of the Ghosts yesterday.

I'm a big fan of the TV show Gargoyles by the author. I'd go as far as to say it is my favorite cartoon of all time. I'm enjoying this so far. I'm only three chapters in so far.

message 129: by Thomas (last edited Dec 28, 2013 05:55AM) (new)

Thomas Watson | 81 comments Finished rereading A Canticle for Leibowtiz. That's a powerful book, which probably explains why people either love it or hate it.

Moving on to A Kepler's Dozen Thirteen Stories About Distant Worlds That Really Exist by Steve B. Howell A Kepler's Dozen. Very interesting premise for an anthology.

Dharmakirti | 942 comments Back around Thanksgiving I lost the cord for recharging my Nook. I just found it (I left it at my sisters) so I'm now able to get back into Witching Hour and The Man From Primrose Lane. I'm also still working on Fallen Dragon and The Summer Tree. I'm enjoying them all.

message 133: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome | 7216 comments It gets really good when you meet the alien. I was bored with the beginning too, and read the Void series first, but then regretted it, because it was the sequel.

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments I just read the part where Ozzie meets the Silfen. Does it pick up soon? If it does, I'll power through.

message 140: by Tamahome (new)

Tamahome | 7216 comments I just ordered Paul McAuley's Evening's Empires, since it never came out in the US. I guess I'm committed. Some notes on it so far.

Ty Wilson (ShatterStar66) | 165 comments I'm trying to squeeze a couple more in before the end of the year. Ready Player One and When the Sacred Ginmill Closes. Now to come up with some goals for next year.

message 142: by Rick (new)

Rick Constellation Games right now. It's... interesting.

Tamahome - The earlier parts of his Quiet War series are good, but very different from most of what I've read in US SF. I need to get back to it actually.

Jim Leesch | 1 comments Steelheart by Brandon Sanderson. Quick and extremely fun. Reminiscent of the types of daunting objectives of the first Mistborn book, but still enjoyable.

Oh, and I finished Krampus: The Yule Lord by Brom just in time for Christmas. Is there such a genre as Rural Fantasy?

message 148: by Carolina (new)

Carolina This month I finished Todo bajo el cielo, A Natural History of Dragons: A Memoir by Lady Trent, His Majesty's Dragon, Ancillary Justice and Daughter of Smoke & Bone. As always the reviews are in my blog: A Girl that Likes Books

Finished listening to Judas Unchained (My Review)

Best Served Cold shall be my first audiobook of 2014!

message 150: by Vanessa (new)

Vanessa | 105 comments Thanks for insight Timothy. I finished Oryx and Crake and did like it but am torn by the cliffhanger ending. Question now is whether to read the sequel. Is the sequel a bit faster paced? And is there at least some resolution or will I need to read both second and third book to get some closure?
