Assassin's Apprentice - December 2013

I first read this book in 2010 and I remember enjoying it. I don't, however, Remember anything about it other than the main protagonist boy some kind of royal bastard, he's a servant and ends up studying to be an assassin and ends up saving the day.

I read the second book in the series and remember even less.

I'm thinking about re-reading the book still. I enjoy Robin Hobb's writing style even if I'm coming up blank at the moment. I'm sure I'll be coming back soon with fresher insights into the book.

I listened to this as an audiobook last year. I expected to love it from all the great reviews but it didn't bowl me over. I meant to read the second one but haven't gotten around to it.

So far so good. Only on the 3rd chapter but am loving the writing style; very pretty. am anxious to see where this "skill" is going.

I liked the whole trilogy. It is rare we find a protagonist who is the black sheep of a royal family and even rarer one who is trained as an assassin by and for the same royal family. And the character is believable, sometimes brilliant and more times flawed, scarred and changed by his struggle with his lot in life.

I've read this series a while back, but I love these books. I like the main character, but I love the Fool. There is so much that is both solid and mysterious woven in these stories.

Don't shoot me, but when I read this book, it biased me against first person point of view so badly that I refused to read it until I was given Cross-stitch by Diana Gabaldon. I now also re-read Jacqueline Carey in first person, but I gave these books away. Robin Hobb's style doesn't work for me for reasons I can pinpoint, but I wanted to throttle the protagonist of this series.

Fitz has some issues that make him less than perfect, but hope for him kept me interested in him.

I have question that was asked by another group that read the book last year, I thought I would like to ask: who is meaner as king, Joffrey from Song of Ice and Fire or Regal?

Good question Kevin. Wow I hate them both! I think I'd give the edge to Joffrey...maybe...

I think Regal is "meaner" and more experienced in misusing power and plotting than Joffrey, but they are similar in many ways. Both are self centered and immature, but although Joffrey technically has more power (or had it longer?), Regal asserts his will on a wider scale. Regal is what Joffrey may have been if he grew up.

I read this book a short time ago and just finished the sequel. Fitz is an engaging narrator but it's his friends who interest me most, especially Chade and The Fool. I also find the ideas of Skill and Wit fascinating. Re the recent discussion, I think that Joffrey is worse because he's evil at such a young age - but they're both characters that you love to hate!
