Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments I love that when I listen to The Lighthouse Family's Ain't No Sunshine in my car, it vibrates the whole car and makes my butt tingle. :)

this has been on repeat for almost a day now. does anyone else have the crazy habit of listening to an album or even just one song on repeat for days?

message 1205: by [deleted user] (new)

My son can do it, I would just get to the point that I may never want to hear it again if I listened to it that frequently.

message 1206: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments i used to drive my parents crazy because i could listen to the same tune over and over again, even if it was just the intro to a computergame. i'd rather listen to that than play the game. maybe i'm a bit autistic when it comes to sounds and music. i usually don't get tired of the music, when i come across it months or even years later i can still listen to it, and because i've listened to it so much there are also a lot of memories attached to it.

message 1207: by [deleted user] (new)

During the summer of 1982, my roommate and I were both temporarily unemployed so we listened to nothing but the Cramps for three solid months.

It was great.

I'm doing that right now with Empire State of Mind because I plan to channel Jay-Z next time I karaoke and I have to learn his lyrics, rhythm, and flow. :)

message 1209: by [deleted user] (new)

If you do channel Jay-Z, be sure to have someone video your karaoke and upload it onto YouTube.

Before Brian Eno split, Roxy Music did the Strand, a rip-roaring celebration of a fictitious dance craze, paid tribute to an inflatable doll, and painted a picture of the modern world as beautiful yet melancholy, lonely and desperate. Thirty-seven years on, this album still sounds like the future.

Harmless space-pixie discovers the electric guitar and becomes teenybop sensation.

A little bit Roxy, a little bit Queen, a little bit Bowie, Be Bop Deluxe seemed freshly beamed from an impossibly glamorous future or an impossibly retro past. And Bill Nelson can play a little bit, too.

What the hell got into Ray Davies? All of that big coin rolling in from those U.S. arena junkets must have gone right to his head. Some people go to church for encouragement and an uplifting message. You could do worse than coming here.

OK, Junior, occasionally you and the rest of your post-rock, Thom Yorke-worshipping, file-sharing brethren need to just stand back while myself and some of the rest of the children of the 70’s testify. Be careful you don’t get anything on you. This here's THE great lost single from the ME decade which still lights up the room and coldcocks the central nervous system thirty-three long years later.

While true rockin' gals were scarce in the 50's, loud, proud Wanda Jackson was a real humdinger. Hootin' and hollerin' like a wilder Brenda Lee, she makes sexy sparks fly on "Fujiyama Mama," "Let's Have a Party," and "Hot Dog! That Made Him Mad."

Early flash of greatness from the Jesus and Mary Chain, the Reids’ compulsive hook factory working overtime with four bits of short-circuiting psychedelia complete with shimmering, fuzz-coated guitar, murky whirlpools of ethereal, Beach-Boys-in-the-throes-of-an-opium-dream harmony, and good old traditional pop craftsmanship that no amount of harsh electrical shocks can hide.

If for nothing else than writing album opener "Rock 'n' Roll Star," Noel Gallagher deserves to be carried around Manchester on a throne for the rest of his life. Although everything else here pales by comparison, "Definitely Maybe" was pretty much the highlight of the dismal 90's to these ears.

message 1229: by RandomAnthony (new)

RandomAnthony | 14536 comments I would prefer the Manchurians (sp?) carry Morrissey around, but he moved to LA, so that would be difficult. Or they could carry around Ian Curtis, but that would be gross. Pete Shelley, but that would be too easy...he's kind of short...let's go with Johnny Marr and leave it at that:)

I realize Roy Orbison's not R&B, but I wanted him on the playlist too, so that's where the "n stuff" bit comes in.

Dissed as the poor man's Elvis Costello, Jackson's debut spits venom and farts napalm. Shame what happened to him after "Beat Crazy," eh?

At a high school dance, one of my friends requested that the cover band play "Personality Crisis." Their response? "We don't play fag music." The album that nearly ruined my life. In a good way...

The cassette tape that inspired a roadside I-75 fistfight between two friends on the way to Florida for Spring Break when one tossed it out the window after the other refused to remove it from the deck after about, oh, 25 plays. Even after all of those spins, "A.C.D.C." never got old.

Marketing men at MCA were busy working overtime back in 1979 trying to position John Hiatt in the public's mind as a Mid-West Elvis Costello/Graham Parker/Joe Jackson/angry young man, but it was a crowded and unlevel playing field. At least we got a great album out of the deal.

Are you talkin' about Damaged, KD? Just want to make sure.

By the way, I once used "Rise Above" as an example of great music in a grad school class. Everyone smiled politely. Damaged is a classic, start to finish.

message 1243: by [deleted user] (new)

Joe Jackson's still going strong. He finally dispensed with his classical music pretensions and went back to making more mature, venom-filled music. Got the chance to see him perform a couple of years back, and he can still bring the goods onstage, even if it's just him and his piano.

I always lamented the fact that Joe Jackson will be undeservedly underrated. He'll always be one of my favorites.

message 1244: by [deleted user] (new)

Somebody signed away the rights to "One More Time" for use in a Taco Bell commercial.

You should've heard me trying to explain that one to my kids.

message 1245: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm indifferent towards songwriters signing their songs away for commercials. It's their songs, and if Joe Jackson wants to sign the rights to Is She Really Going Out With Him? to Magnum condoms, it's his right.

On the other hand, advertisers should really be aware of the content of the songs they're licensing. I once saw a Volkswagen commercial with the Velvet Underground's Heroin playing in the background, and I literally jumped out of my chair. WTF???

Gus wrote: "I'm indifferent towards songwriters signing their songs away for commercials. It's their songs, and if Joe Jackson wants to sign the rights to Is She Really Going Out With Him? to Magnum condoms, i..."

I agree. In the end, there's nothing wrong with grabbing the chance for some big coin via commercial licensing, but my knee-jerk reaction when I hear an old familiar song on the tube is always, "Hey, wait just a minute..." almost like I'm trying to convince myself my youth was better than anyone else's.

In some instances, 'tis better for this generation to discover some of these songs through advertising than not at all.

I'm in a coffee shop and they're playing The The's "Slow Emotion Reply" over the speakers. Great song, hadn't heard it in a long time...
