When he was a schoolboy his classmates bullied him and one burned his finger with a candle.

When he traveled to the other dimension, he had to be anchored to the current world. He used music - I think someone (a girl?) played music (a lyre?) and this kept him anchored so he could come back.

I think the book covers his childhood to young adulthood.
