What's the name of the sci-fi book [s]

Hello fellow readers,

I remember reading a sci-fi book way back in the mid 90s. I remember being absolutely riveted by the book and if I remember correctly, it was definitely not part of a series.

The book had a giant brain as the villain. There was a boy or two boys...They are transported to an alternate parallel universe where the people move to preset deadlines dictated by seconds.

The cover had a lot of greens and blacks on it maybe with a time swirl?

Any clues, ideas will be greatly appreciated.
