Liz M Post questions about the RwS Winter 13/14 Challenge here.

Rebekah (bekalynn) I may be opening a worm can but in regard to task 20.6 we are to" read one of the top 500 Best Books of the 20th Century ". Some of the books on the list were not published in the 20th century. I was looking at reading American Gods which is currently #288. It was published in 2001, the twenty-first century.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14248 comments We'll go with the list, even though some may not be appropriate for that list. (Sort of like last time, when there was a non-fiction title on the WWII Fiction list.)

Rebekah (bekalynn) thanks

Joy (joyousnorth) | 100 comments Can you please let me know whether or not Hyperbole and a Half: Unfortunate Situations, Flawed Coping Mechanisms, Mayhem, and Other Things That Happened is considered a graphic novel (and therefore not eligible for style points).

Thank you!

Although there appears to be a lot of illustrations in this and some of Amazon includes it with graphic novels, the text is quite dense and BPL does *not* have it as a graphic novel. Since we usually rely on BPL for our decisions, we'll catalog this in our database as non-fiction and you're good to go with styles.

Great - thank you!

The Monuments Men: Allied Heroes, Nazi Thieves, and the Greatest Treasure Hunt in History by Robert M. Edsel

Huh. You'd think with a subtitle as long as that he could have put a B in it somewhere :(

Message him on Twitter (since his username is in his profile) and explain the benefits of being a Goodreads Author??

I know, I thought for sure it would fit Bingo, but then, no B! He wasn't born in 1964 either;( oh well, I still want to read it before the movie. Too bad the paperback isn't the most popular because it's 500+ pages. I guess tweeting him would feel unfair, even though I'd be happy if he happens to decide to become a Goodreads author. Maybe he will with the movie coming out;)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14248 comments I don't suppose it's any consolation, but the hardback is only 473 pages according to BPL & Worldcat, and the paperback only 473 according to Worldcat (BPL doesn't shelve this edition).

According to his Goodreads author page, this looks to be his debut book so it could fit Beginnings/Endings task

No, he has a book published in 2006, earlier than this one. He also published in 2013, so not his last book either.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2598 comments Scratch that, his first book was 2006.

That actually does help! I ordered it on audio and it's 12 disks and my local library has the lower page count, too. Even if I can't count it, it isn't such a near miss! ;)

Denise | 1821 comments How many times can the 100 point completion bonus for the main RwS challenge be earned? I won't finish TtPR, but might be able to finish RwS twice.

I thought I had read something about this, but have looked and can't find it.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 2598 comments I think it can be earned as many times as you have completed the RWS. Some people have done the whole thing twice. Any of the tasks can be repeated as many times as it fits the task except where it indicates it can only be done a certain number of times.

This time it can be completed up to 3 times. 10.1 News Resolutions has a 3-time limit. When we have the Square Peg task, the limit is once because that task can be completed just one time.

Ah, got it! Thanks, Elizabeth.

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 263 comments It says that Task 10.1 may be repeated three times. Do I need to complete the challenge before repeating it?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14248 comments Jenifer wrote: "It says that Task 10.1 may be repeated three times. Do I need to complete the challenge before repeating it?"

You may repeat any of the 10- and 20-point tasks without completing all of them. Most tasks you may complete as many times as you wish, while the 10.1 task will often be restricted as to how many times.

message 22: by Jenifer (new)

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 263 comments Oh, I always thought we had to complete the entire challenge first...this is great!

message 23: by Ella (new)

Ella Eli (ellaeli) | 25 comments Could someone please explain me something about the Group reading task - Do I need to read all of the books to get 10 points for the task? I just couldn't find info on this matter!?

message 24: by Jenifer (new)

Jenifer (jensamaha) | 263 comments No, you just choose to read the one that interests you.

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14248 comments Ella wrote: "Could someone please explain me something about the Group reading task - Do I need to read all of the books to get 10 points for the task? I just couldn't find info on this matter!?"

Only 1 book necessary to complete any task, so, no, you don't need to read them all! Each book counts 10 points and whatever styles qualify.

message 26: by Ella (new)

Ella Eli (ellaeli) | 25 comments Thank you for the answer!

message 27: by Ella (new)

Ella Eli (ellaeli) | 25 comments Hello. I have a question about a reading resolutions task (10.1.)! My resolution was to read 5 books - so when I read all of them and my task I finished I write a post - and for the task I get 10 points and plus combo points for every book? And for every book extra points for page count, for release year and if I write a review for every book - 5 reviews all together - I get 10 points for each? Is it so?

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14248 comments Ella wrote: "Hello. I have a question about a reading resolutions task (10.1.)! My resolution was to read 5 books - so when I read all of them and my task I finished I write a post - and for the task I get 10 p..."

Not exactly. Each task is to read one book. We don't have tasks that require you to read more than one book. Most of the 10- and 20-point tasks you can do as many times as you want. This season, Task 10.1 is restricted to no more than 3 times.

I think you are not a native English speaker, and if you need more information, please ask.

No, English is not my first language.
Oh - now I understand it! I can read only three books for that task! Now when you explained it I wonder how it didn't came to me earlier! Thank you Elizabeth! :)

Elizabeth (Alaska) | 14248 comments You're welcome!

I know I often use idioms and language "shortcuts" and my explanations might not be as clear as I'd like them to be. You are always welcome to ask questions.

Louise Bro | 477 comments Could I get "Not a Novel" bonus points for Swords and Deviltry?
From what I can see it is a story comprised of three novellas (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Swords_a...), so I just thought I'd check.

message 32: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) OKay, I must have gone back to my old math tricks. On the readerboard my score is 760 as updated to post 842, but I have my score as 775 at post # 832. Can you tell me where I goofed up.......again! So sorry!

Rebekah, it appears there is an addition error between post 662 (510) and post 711 (+50=560, not 575). This then carried forward through your next several posts. Let me know if I missed something.

message 34: by Rebekah (new)

Rebekah (bekalynn) Thank you, Kate, for taking the trouble to check on that. I think I have corrected all my posts.

message 35: by Heather (new)

Heather (sarielswish) | 738 comments random question - i'm a gamer and I've been acquiring more books for my system lately. would the rulebooks for Pathfinder qualify for challenges? most are 300-400 pages.

Pathfinder Roleplaying Game: Advanced Player's Guide is just an example. I think I have the Advanced Race Guide, the Advanced Player's Guide, and the Bestiary to read through, at the moment.

message 36: by Louise Bro (new)

Louise Bro | 477 comments I'm ready to claim my points for "Swords and Deviltry", so I was wondering if it would be possible to get a ruling for my question above? I appreciate your help!

message 37: by Heather (new)

Heather (sarielswish) | 738 comments Louise - yes, you do get those points. I've claimed two of that series this go round and got it for both.

message 38: by Louise Bro (new)

Louise Bro | 477 comments Thanks Heather!
