Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments Read between 2003 - 2005. The book wasn't brand new at the time but didn't seem old either. It was about a girl, who was between 11 - 13 years old in the hospital for heart surgery. The surgery seemed like a big deal, or something she'd been waiting awhile for, but it wasn't a heart transplant because she wasn't hospitalized for long beforehand. I think the book started off with the girl at home the night before she's supposed to go to the hospital, thinking about the upcoming surgery. She had older siblings.

The surgery happens near the beginning or mid-way through the book, so it's not some big deal but rather a natural part of the book. There's a nurse in the hospital who gets her settled in her first night at the hospital who's got a big personality and some kind of catch phrase the other kids call her by, but not in a negative way, I believe. Shortly after her surgery, the main character is in the activity room and wants to make an anatomically correct heart out of clay. There were Spanish phrases throughout the book, and a few kids were speaking Spanish in the activity room scene in particular.

Marilyn Singer - It Can't Hurt Forever

James Howe - Night without stars

bookel | 4028 comments Full title: A night without stars.

That one's excellent. I forget if either book has Spanish, been a few years since I read them.

Kate (Feathered Turtle Press Reviews) (stargazer401) | 257 comments It's definitely A Night Without Stars by James Howe! Thank you!

bookel | 4028 comments Yay! Definitely worth a reread. The hardcover has the better cover, but if you want to save space there's a mass market paperback.
