Brittany (bluereine) | 3 comments I think it was science fiction, Dystopian novel. Everyone had to wear masks with wigs. It was illegal to see anyone without their mask even family. I read it in 2001. I had just read Fahrenheit 451 and the Giver it was recommended by the librarian. I think it was a young adult or children's novel.

Robin | 10 comments I know it's not a novel but this sounds similar to the short story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut.

Pamela Love | 1510 comments This also isn't a novel, but it sounds a little like "The Moon Moth", a short story by Jack Vance.

The Cure by Sonia Levitin?
https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4...

The basic description on Amazon mentions: "It is the year 2407, when everyone wears a mask to emphasize conformity, and tranquility has been implemented via genetics, drugs, and therapy. It is also the year 1348, the time of the Black Death in Strasbourg, France, and 16-year-old Gemm has been sent back from the future to cure his nonconformist desire to create music. In the past he is known as Johannes, the son of a wealthy moneylender in a small Jewish community that finds comfort and strength in the daily rituals of Judaic faith. But as the plague sweeps the land, terrified people in city after city scapegoat the Jews as the cause of their problems. Officials find it convenient to have someone to blame, and realize that they can wipe out their debts by torturing and burning the moneylenders and their families--but they play music all the while to make the horrible scene less dismal."

Here's the link for Pamela's suggestion of The Moon Moth.

Brittany (bluereine) | 3 comments It's not Harrison Bergeron or Moon Moth. The Cure is the closest to what I remember but I don't remember there being time travel. (I'm going to read it to make sure) I'm starting to wonder if it was a short story and not a novel like I thought. Thanks for the help.

Brittany (bluereine) | 3 comments It was The Cure by Sonia Levitin. I must have combined another book I read with this one and that's why it didn't seem familiar at first. Thanks for the help
