Yes, and the book that did win, was in my opinion rather paternalistic towards Native populations.

My co-mod, Manybooks, has started a complementary thread here: https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/.... Not all deserving books and authors have ever been honored.

Thank you, Cheryl, I should have thought of this.

So, as of November, we're caught up with the Newbery books. Any suggestions or preferences how we go forward? Open this thread once a year? Keep it open all year? One month a year do a Newbery theme in the Miscellaneous Club?
(that third option would be easiest for me, but this is your group...)

Since you are the host, I would suggest doing club in the way that it is easiest for you (and I also like the one month a year Newbery topic in the Miscellaneous Club).

I concur--Newbery topic once a year in the Miscellaneous Club, possibly in February or March, after the announcements have been made, and giving time for participants to read whichever winners/honors they are interested in.
Ok, as of November 2025 we're all caught up. We're reading the latest Winner and Honor books now through the end of the year. ALA makes their annual announcement in January, but I like the idea of Nov/Dec. So, we'll be reading the latest winners every Nov/Dec.
Do note, though, that this club has served its purpose. Starting in Nov/Dec 2026 we'll be reading the Newbery books in the Miscellaneous Club. If you want to put it in your tags or on your calendar, I have already posted that thread there - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/....

Oops, missed your comment. I see your point about Feb or March. But I think I really do prefer Nov/Dec. Libraries will have had a chance to buy them. And the waiting lists will be shorter. Some of us may be inspired to discuss some of them at holiday gatherings, or give them as holiday gifts. And yes, some folks will have read them earlier in the year... but if they're good & memorable, they'll still be able to discuss with the rest of us!
Do note, however, that most discussions never close, especially the Newbery threads. You can find past Newbery book discussions in the Archive, here - https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group...
