Hi Lee,Unfortunately, I don't know the book but it sounds so interesting I wanted to post so I can read it when someone solves it.
It does sound a little like Terry Brooks Magic Kingdom For Sale/Sold but I'm pretty sure that's not it. Might be worth checking just in case.
Yes it is similar though thats not it. I do add that the interview was from an add in the paper that stated that the job was a magician's apprentice, real magic not all the fake stuff.If you are fan of portal fantasy try The Eldran Sequence books. Although not great character development, there is an engaging story arc.

I've never read it, but the summary for The Unsuspecting Mage seems to match some details, like answering an ad and arriving in a field through a portal.

He gets attacked by wolf's and is saved by a spokesman who takes him to a village. Whilst here he helps the locals by trying to find two missing girls. In doing so he banishes a spirit from an old house.
This then gaines the rights to the property.
He sets about learning his trade. Learns more and for some reason has to cross this country's mountains into a nieghbouring kingdom. This kingdom wishes to start a war due to an evil priesthood.
In all this he meets a boy in a city before crossing the mountain who joins him. During the series he finds out there are two Waring God's and that the evil priesthood destroyed the other church. The God has a star on the world in the form of a large gem that the boy takes. This causes him to grow faster and become a great warrior.
That's about as much as I can remember. I'm sure it's a 4 or 5 book series.
