Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 400 comments @Judithe: Well, I don't read while I work until I get home. I don't want to risk getting in trouble.

@Ezi: No, I can't do that, but I do have some ARCs I got from there that I was allowed to take.

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Okay here are all my books:

Kick Ass Heroine: River Marked (Mercy Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs

Dragons: The Dream Thief (Drakon, #2) by Shana Abe

Free Space: Death Magic (World of the Lupi, #8) by Eileen Wilks

Ezi, it has slowly become one of my favorite series. The writing is so intelligent as are the characters. But it was a slow build. She takes her time and then all of sudden you realize how much you love it.

Sandra | 25914 comments World of Lupi series is excellent and very underrated IMO. No formulas were harmed in the creation of the series.

message 58: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 780 comments I just read my first World of Lupi book last month and will surely continue with series. I liked the world and the characters were intelligent and different indeed.

By the way, this read was a recommendation from Leslie in another group challenge, so thanks again, Leslie!

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) | 2516 comments Just checking in. I'm 1/2 into Poison Princess (The Arcana Chronicles, #1) by Kresley Cole and for awhile, I thought, WTH, but I've settled in and I'm engaged now.
I am still think I'll end up changing my dragon book to the Thea Harrison book 6: Kinked (Elder Races, #6) by Thea Harrison , which will be out on Tuesday. But honestly, I'll see what my SSS bingo number is first.

For those planning multiple challenge books, This is some serious balancing, huh?

message 63: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ | 1616 comments I've started River Marked (Mercy Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs and am a few chapters in. Also started my SSS book - which of course doesn't work for this :( but should be a quick read - its a series I really enjoy

message 64: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I will be starting that one soon Melissa.
I haven't started any books yet. Finishing one up while hubby drives us home. the time change has totally messed me up.

Yep, Tempting the Beast is on the group bookshelf, so you could use it for the buddy read as well as the Free Space book - up to you ;)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I'm supposed to be reading Hearts of Darkness (Deadglass, #1) by Kira Brady this month for another challenge. I didn't realize it was on the dragons shelf. I obviously only did a quick look this weekend.

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Good morning Team! I'll be working today (subbing in a first grade classroom) and not sure if I will get on the computer. I'll be starting my KAH book later today.

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 400 comments @Ezi & Leslie: I read the synopsis of the books from my list and those two are the ones that I'm more interested in reading this week. It's such a shame that there were a few books I wanted to read, but my library doesn't carry it and I didn't want to request them from other libraries because it takes a couple days for it transfer over.

~Melissa~ | 1616 comments Hey Ezi - I picked my for sure dragon book (it works for my Monopoly shelf - yeah!!) Kiss of Fate (Dragonfire, #3) by Deborah Cooke

I'm about 5 chapters into River Marked - getting good - something is gonna happen soon I can tell.
@Leslie - haha - I think this is the first time I'm ahead of you in a buddy read - I had to laugh. Never happens Miss Speedy :D

Ezi FYI - I more than likely won't be able to get on at all tomorrow. I have an off site meeting and then my daughter and I are going downtown to the Pink concert - I can't wait. I will be reading one of my books on my lunch hour tomorrow. Will update you guys again Wed morning to let you know where I'm at.

Book: Poison Princess by Kresley Cole
Finished 11/3
Rating & Review: ★★★
I don't know how I felt about this one. It was okay, but i think my feelings were affected by the fact tha I read Allegiant & Horde this past week. So a 3rd YA Dystopian was just overkill in a week.
Plus, Evangeline didn't quite measure up to Tris or Deuce. She was their opposite as she wasn't really a "heroine" yet. She was unsure, scared, and just a follower for all except the last chapter. She wasn't resourceful and she didn't think quick on her feet. It's hard to see why she was the "Empress", but she came into her own at the very end of the book.
I wasn't sure if this world was an earth taken over by zombies, or an earth where supernaturals staged a game giving various characters powers to battle it out for survival. I think that is why I wasn't as drawn in to this plot. I will read book 2 before I decide what I think about this series. In addition, the lack of progress between Evie and Jackson was problematic for me. But like i said, I will give Kresley Cole book 2 to get me on board.

This one was more erotica than romance, but it was an okay beginning. Ellora Cave books are kind of crude and not smooth with their sexy.
In this book, Merinus Tyler, a young journalist, was sent to make contact with Callan Lyons, in order to bring him for questioning and protection.
See Callan Lyons is an experimental being, part man, part lion and he was born of a secret research lab experiment with humans and animal species.
Someone is hunting these new creations, and the Tyler family is offering them protection if they go "public" about the experiments. When Callan and Merinus meet, there was combustion of pheromones resulting in a "mating frenzy" so they had to be going at it all the time.
On top of that, they had to figure out who murdered Maria, Callan's surrogate mom, and who is trying to hunt the rest of his feline family. So what we have here is Lots of Sex and a murder mystery.

the writing was okay, nothing spectacular. The plot and storyline felt very familiar as I am also reading the New Species series by Laurann Dohner. I prefer that one because the humans "voluntarily" fall in love with the genetically engineered man, as opposed to being forced together by intermingling pheronomes. I will continue this series and see how far i get before I get annoyed by the crude/vulgar dialogue.

you are right. I realized the parallel with new species, and the writing in New Species is nothing to write home either.

I felt bad because I read Married By Morning (The Hathaways, #4) by Lisa Kleypas The Sweetest Thing (Lucky Harbor, #2) by Jill Shalvis right before Tempting the Beast (Breeds, #1) by Lora Leigh .

@Leslie: Mercy Thompson is awesome reading

message 85: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25914 comments Yep, I've read all of Breeds & most of New Species and the parallels are obvious. The newer breeds are better than the beginning ones, but it helps with the story arc to read them all.

Immortal in Death by J.D. Robb
Shelf: Kick Ass Heroine
Read 11/5
Rating & Review: ★★★1/2

I'm not much of a mystery reader but this series is an exception. I like the futuristic setting and Eve is just one of the the best kick ass heroines without any paranormal powers ever - smart, intelligent and tough. She has her demons but never gives up fighting for things and people she cares about. This time she had to clear her friend Mavis from the murder charge.
I must say this third book is maybe my least favorite so far in terms of the crime story, but I love reading how the bond and relationship between Eve and Roarke grows stronger with each book.
I will for sure continue digging myself through the series occasionally.

Judithe | 6566 comments Ahh...that's one I need to pick up again! I love that it still gets good reviews and I have more than two dozen to "catch up" on!

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Loving this Mercy Thompson book! Can't put it down at the moment.

Skandia - I'm pretty much obsessed with that series now. I've been reading one a month now for almost two years with a group here on GR. It's been great. We are up to #26 (I think) this month. The mysteries vary in being good but the Eve and Roarke show never gets old, it just keeps getting better and better.

message 89: by Skandia (new)

Skandia (sfgirl) | 780 comments It is very comforting to know that there are plenty of good books waiting to be read in this series.

message 90: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments It is pretty hard to believe that it can stay good for so long. It does go through the occasional slump, but the last 5 or so have all been great.

message 91: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) | 2516 comments I guess I am in the minority because I didn't see the what people loved about In Death. I've only read books 1& 2, but I am baffled.

message 92: by Ezi (new)

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) | 2516 comments So I got Kinked (Elder Races, #6) by Thea Harrison today, so I gotta decide between that book and Mortal Danger (World of the Lupi, #2) by Eileen Wilks , though I am leaning towards the later book

message 93: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments I would probably go with the Thea Harrison book. Those are so special. Mortal Ties is a really good book and it sets the stage for so much of the rest of the series, but it's not a quick read.

As to the In Death series, I can see how it wouldn't appeal to some people. There are some authors people love and I just don't. I have tried to read the Lora Leigh Breeds series several times and just can't get into it.

I loved book 2 & 3 the best. Tiago & nianne..then the Djinn's caring for those kids won me over:D

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments Week 1: Kick-Ass-Heroine
River Marked (Mercy Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs
11/5/13 ****1/2 stars
Review:4.5 stars Loved this entry in the Mercedes Thompson series though it was very different from others. In this one Mercy and Adam have married and are on their honeymoon and encounter visitors from her Indian heritage and Mercy ends up fighting a fantastical river creature. Adam has to learn to trust her and Mercy discovers how deep her feelings for Adam run. It is an intense, but also introspective story and while it drags a little in the middle, it always held my interest. I loved learning about Mercy's origins and enjoyed Adam and her interactions. I would have liked a little peek into their bedroom, voyeur that I am but I appreciate the author's reticence.

Ezi Chinny (ezinwanyi) | 2516 comments Good job Skandia & Leslie, I have updated our book post.
Leslie, I have a crush on Stefan. I didn't care for the stuff with the fae, I loved the books featuring the vamps Stefan and Marsilla because she is a mean witch, with a "b"

message 97: by ~Leslie~ (new)

~Leslie~ (akareadingmachine) | 1224 comments She is pretty nasty and yet kind of cool! And I do like Stefan. He needs a girl. That's my solution to everything. I felt really bad for him in this one. The fae in this one remind me of the fae in World of the Lupi. They are scary!

message 98: by ~Melissa~ (new)

~Melissa~ | 1616 comments Hahaha! Leslie - I finished River Marked (Mercy Thompson, #6) by Patricia Briggs at lunch time today. I'll share my thoughts in our thread sometime tomorrow.

@Ezi - just getting on quick to let you know I finished my Kick Ass Heroine book. Will post my review tomorrow. Marsilla is a total bitch - pretty sure I said that to Leslie in our buddy read thread for the last book!!

Started my Dragon book today - not to far in yet. Will read more tomorrow.

Ok - off to the concert - have a nice night ladies - get lots of reading done ☺

Amy ~Lover of Books~ | 400 comments I'm starting my kick-ass heroine book really soon! I've got the audio from the library so I should be done with it sometime tomorrow and then I can move on to my dragon book!
