Changed my New2YouSeries book to
, and just finished it...review tonight or in the morning (oops...one strike, coming up. No worries as it will soon be erased). I generally loathe zombies, and read basically nothing related to them (at least deliberately!).This one is a combo of freebie to declutter/shorter book/Steph's good stars choice of books that fit the shelf...and it was a good one! Happily surprised. Now to finish work project, then review, then SHELVES!!!!!!!!!!

Review:
Cassia has always followed the rules of the Society. It’s at her Matching ceremony where Cassia’s life is changed forever when her best friend Xander’s is revealed to be her Match. While this should be a happy time Cassia is haunted by the flash of another boy’s face when she uses the card. The Society explains the reason she saw Ky as a rare glitch and nothing more and that the boy will never be matched because he’s an Aberration. Cassia can’t deny the fact that she’s drawn to Ky he’s unlike Xander in many ways he also has a secret like her.
As Cassia takes her tests for her final job placement she starts to question everything she’s be taught. When the officials gather all the artifacts from the people it spurs Cassia to know Ky more. While they each continue to play the part they are expected to they each share in writing words that aren’t permitted to exist. As they grow closer Cassia will be put the test torn between love and following the rules. Will they survive what’s to come? And why are the officials acting so strange?
I like Cassia she’s an interesting characters. I’m torn between both Xander and Ky they each have something to offer Cassia but choosing the right one won’t be easy. I like that Cassia grows through the book from the girl that follows the rules to a rule breaker. I’m curious to see what the future will hold for the trio.
I’ve have Matched on my TBR list for a few years but I’ve never gotten around to it yet. I was only a few pages in when the book captured my attention it was hard to put down. I was captivated by the concept for the Society it’s the dystopian idea that I love with a unique perspective. I think the idea of using a sorting system to match is interesting it’s an interesting idea. I found the book well written it flows from start to finish creating a book I had a hard time putting down. With engaging characters that I was able to connect with feeling their emotional roller coaster as the book progressed. I really enjoyed the book it’s my favorite genre and I can't seem to get enough. I’m dying to know what’s going to happen to Cassia. It's a clean story so teens as well as adults will enjoy the series. However I don't think I could live in the Society where they only have 100 poems or songs. I would go nuts. I’ve already purchased the next book in the series.

Thoughts:
I generally loathe zombies, and read basically nothing related to them (at least deliberately!), but sometimes they come up in challenges, and this one was free, and didn't sound too bad. Such a resounding reason to choose it, LOL!
BUT, I also saw a friend gave it a high rating (and yeah, she likes zombies, but still...), so I gave it a try. And really enjoyed it! (It's also won a bunch of awards, so that was reassuring as well!)
The zombie plague is spreading, and seems impossible to stop. Towns are becoming stockades, folks are having to kill their families and neighbors who've been infected, and the outlook is bleak. Trace Monroe, "Cowboy", gets a lucky break when he finds a beautiful red head, with a top dollar reward. But, there's something special about her, and he finds it hard to turn her in, rather he joins up with her on her quest throughout the wild west.
Though "Red" (yep, the above red head) REALLY wants to travel alone, she somehow acquires companions, starting with Cowboy, and somewhere along the way, they become a family. Along the way, her secrets start to come out and they have the potential to stop this zombie infection...perhaps!
I loved the characters, and found the whole situation intriguing (horrible, but very intriguing!). Surprise find, and I'll be continuing!
I'm going to read
for "Witches", and still debating about "Rewind"...Possibilities abound, including:

Date finished: 11/18/13
Rating: ★★★★☆
Thoughts:
One thing I love about Ann Aguirre is the variety between her series! I first fell in love with Sirantha Jax, and have enjoyed meeting her other strong heroines as well.
This is the second of the Corine Solomon series, and Corine revisits her hometown, the place where her mother died. It was no ordinary death, 12 people came for her and she died, but her efforts also resulted in the escape of her daughter. Now Corine wants to find out why, and find justice or revenge.
However, there is a lot more going on than she ever realized. Along with Chance, Jess and more new & old characters, they have to figure out the riddle of this stuck-in-time town and all the missing people & pets. Action-packed, suspense, romance...great read!
I'll definitely be continuing this series!

Review:
A disease has caused people to go into hiding avoiding the people who have been transformed by the disease into blood crazy vampires. Kayla is a warrior in the colony so she risks her life every time she ventures outside the colony to look for supplies. It’s on when she’s out getting the medicine to save Maci that Monarch asked for that she encounters hungry vampires but they don’t attack her. Kayla keeps this little bit of information to herself not wanting the Highers who run the colony to know she’s different.
Kayla has always followed the rules attempting to be perfect to avoid drawing attention to herself except no one can be perfect all the time. When the Highers punish Kayla choosing her for the Gathering she’s left outside with two other people both from the colony both have no heart beats. While the trio thinks they are the only ones alive on the outside they soon learn that is not the case. As the secrets start to unfold around Kayla she learns that truth that maybe the Highers aren’t the good guys they claim. Will she be able to save her friends as well as find a cure? Is she the cure?
I liked Kayla’s character she’s my favorite type of Kick-ass-character plus she’s a vampire slayer and these aren’t the nice sparkly kind either. Kayla is on the innocent side but learns the dark truth which I think makes her a better character however I was able to connect with her right from the start there is something about having a vampire sniff your neck and not bite that just makes me want to learn more about her. I’m not sure about the guys yet so they will have to wait till the next book.
I’ve had Darkness Falls on my TBR list before the book came out. I love the original cover not so much the new one but I think it’s because I’m partial to the artwork. I like the idea that the vampires are created by an outbreak disease which reminds me of Resident Evil except its blood crazy vampires which I love. I’ve always been a fan of vampire hunters and Kayla with her super strength makes for the ideal slayer. I think the author took an existing idea but put her own unique spin creating a captivating story that keeps you sucked right from the start. I had a hard time putting Darkness Falls down it’s just one of those books you lose all track of time reading. I think the author did a fantastic job creating a world for our characters and giving them an interesting story. The author has a smooth writing style so the story flows, making for a quick read that teens as well as adults will enjoy. I honestly enjoyed everything about the book and even picked up the rest of the series to start.

It has been some time since I read the first book in the series so it took a little reading to get back into the characters and figure out what was going on.
Persephone (Seph) Alcmedi has been asked to compete for the high priestess position left vacant by Vivian Diamond who has mysteriously disappeared. Persephone must keep secret what she knows about Vivian. Seph has also acquired her grandmother, a child left orphaned by Vivian and a hunky werewolf. To add to her plate, she is the Lustrata, carries the stain of a powerful vampire and has ticked off the fae.
There are a lot of characters and situations that will not make sense if you have not read the first book. The story moves quickly and mostly confusion free. I hope to see the relationship between Seph and Johnny grow in the coming books.
A good read for my day off.

Review:
In BloodSworn, we meet Trina Weyebridge, one of the most powerful, most feared type of witch, and the last of her line. She's a BloodSworn witch whose magic comes from her blood. As powerful as this type of witch is, Trina doesn't practice magic. Her powers were bound for her protection ten years ago. Since then she's been living her life in the human world as a hematologist. However, things are about to change. Vampires have kidnapped her sister and she'll do anything to get her back.
The war between vampires and shifters had ended one hundred and fifty years ago with a shaky truce that neither race would encroach on the other's territory.I enjoyed this world that Stacey Brutger created. Vampires are not seductive or sparkly. They, along with the witches, are the bad guys in this novel. The shifters play an integral part in this world and keep the peace. Merrick, the Leo, was my favorite character. I also liked Merrick, Trina's protector. I was intrigued by the power and history of the BloodSworn. This would make a good series and, if the author chooses to write more in this world, I would definitely read it.
Witches were little threat to the pack, but something about their magic disturbed the virus that kept vampires alive. Vampires and witches had hunted each other fanatically for centuries. The only thing that stopped an out-right war between the races was the pack's pledge to keep the peace.

Wow! This is a dark, gritty, in your face book that I did not quite expect. In a future where religion has been put aside, Chess is a Debunker for the Church of Truth. Debunkers get paid by the Church to prove that ghosts are not involved in fake hauntings. Chess' life is a whirlwind of chaos. She is a drug addict and owes Bump, the local dealer a huge amount of money. In an effort to repay her debt, Chess becomes embroiled in a turf war both physically and spiritually.
This book was often difficult to read. The drug use was so matter of fact without delving into the root of the problem. The speech patterns were odd. Almost like trying to have a conversation with Yoda. There could be a good love triangle between Chess, Terrible and Lex but I am not sure that I would read the next book to find out.

I love that series, Cheryl! One of my favorites. The "downspeak" is hard to get used to initially, but it gets easier after a few books. And, her drug use remains a constant theme throughout and more about her history is revealed in pieces. It's definitely not for everyone.I finished my REWIND book this AM. I'll post my review shortly.
Our USMC Birthday Ball is tomorrow. We'll be out of town for that, so I'll be scarce for a bit. But, I'll check in sometime after the shelf announcements and let ya know what I'll be reading.
Thanks for the information, Steph. I guess I had been reading "lighter" books and this one just blew me away. Perhaps I will read the next one to see if it grabs me.Enjoy the ball! My ongoing thanks to the fine men and women of the USMC!

You may like #2 more now that you have an idea of what to expect. But, definitely don't expect a lot of delving into the roots of her addiction. It's more of a gradual understanding of what's happened in her life that may have lead to the addiction. It's definitely a constant though. So, best to avoid them if that was a negative in the first book for ya. Thanks! :D Semper Fi!
Sorry to hear it, Mandy. Both of mine this week were just okay, but thankfully they were both quick reads.

Review:
Madeleine "Maddy" Nitecliff needs a change. Where better to start anew than England. Upon her arrival, she feels a strong pull to head straight to Stonehenge. Once there, she makes a wish for "a changed reality".
That night, she quickly learns that wish or no wish, a changed reality is exactly what she's gotten. Turns out, she's a third generation Niteclif, descendant of Sherlock, and she's required to "... accept [her legacy] by age of thirty and pick up the mantle of service for minimum of ten years." And, to her surprise, two men (one dragon-shifter and one fae - both gorgeous, of course) want to "help her" and be her one and only.
The book was a quick read, however I wasn't fond of Maddy and the ending felt rushed. Had it not been for the supernatural twist on a old favorite, I probably would've rated it lower. I'd wanted to love this book and dig into another fun series. Hell, I even bought Wrath (book #2) before reading book 1. I'm just not sure I liked it enough to continue.
See my full review for a list of things I liked/disliked about the book.

Review:
I’ve been watching the Witches of East End on lifetime and recently learned it’s a book. So of course when the option came up to read a witch book I jumped at it. The book revolves around three witches Joanna, Freya and Ingrid living in North Hampton. They had made a deal to no longer practice magic anymore they were living just like everyone else. Yet after thousands of years it’s gotten harder to keep up their side of the deal. It’s not like they use their magic to hurt people who’s going to really know if they help a few people out.
As each of them is tested in their own ways they begin to use their magical gifts to help others. Freya is your party girl working at the local pub, Ingrid is working at the library and Joanna is taking care of the house and Tyler. While the girls are young their mother Joanna is in her sixty’s but she feels as young as the girls. If one of the girls was to accidentally pass away than Joanna would become young and pregnant with her daughter. After all immortality does have its benefits. Ingrid sets up shop on her lunch breaks at the library using her gift to help people as well as save her library. Freya uses her gift at work making a love potion, and Joanna fixes a burned pie in front of Tyler. Yet not all of their help is reciprocated when things start to go wrong the women are blamed.
I think the characters are interesting in. This is my first book by the author but I’ve heard that Freya is in her Blue Bloods series so I feel like I missing out on her. I think Ingrid is my favorite because she’s willing to risk it all to save her library which is what I would do if I was here. I wanted to love them but I didn’t they had their moments but for the most part I wasn’t able to connect with any of them.
The idea is also captivating very Practical Magic but the story just doesn’t flow along smoothly. Unfortunately I found myself losing interest right away but kept on plugging along hoping the story would pick up. I’m not sure if I just had to high of expectations or if the story just falls short. If I hadn’t been so determined to finish the book I’m afraid it would have made it onto my DNF shelf but I believe every book deserves a fair chance. I think part of the problem was that we kept bouncing between the women and that there was so much information to a point of overload. I’ve not read a lot of witch books but this one isn’t my favorite. I’ve not read anything by the author before but I still want to check out her other series.
(BTW I hate giving it a 2 star review but I just didn't like it.)
I like it too. I could do without Freya and her loose lips though. She frustrates me. I really like Ingrid, mom and aunt.

Review:
Witnessing his parents death by a dark/black witch, Luke vows to hunt the murderer down. He is gifted the ability to see witches when others just seem them as ordinary people. He is a witch finder. He joins a group, Malleus Maleficoruma a brotherhood of men who hunt witches. On joining you have to pass a series of trials, the last one is to murder a witch that has been selected at random.
Luke, hoping it would be the man who murdered his parents, is disappointed slightly when it turns out to be a sixteen year old girl named Rosa Greenwood. But she is still at witch and after her death he can continue his hunt.
Rosa, or Rose as she mostly called is a prisoner so to speak in her own home. A witch who can not practice for fear the servants will notice, on top of that her family is putting on an act they are pretty much paupers themselves. Both her mother and brother are hoping to use Rose to help themselves insuring their future and finance.
I really liked this book, at first I was thinking okay here we go we have a boy who has no parents who witness their deaths and is marked or rather gifted since it has happened, who lives with his uncle and the deaths happened at the hand of a dark/black wizard. I was thinking hmmm Harry Potterish. Not exactly but something made stop for a moment, but then as I read on I was thinking 'nah this isn't anything like it other then the few things previously mentioned'.
I have to say this book is really good. The story is well written and held my attention and I couldn't wait to get back to each time I had to stop. Kept me wondering will Luke do it? Can her really kill her? Will he find the person who murdered his parents?
The visuals it was giving me were very detailed and vivid. Like this for example, every witch seems to have a color around them, whips like smoke that seem to dance and shimmer. Not only can Luke see them but he can see the magic and spells they do, the traces that remain on spells already cast. It gave for really great imagery.
Really really looking forward to see where this series goes, it's going to be a good one I think.
Judithe has read her book, just has to write a review! It will be up tomorrow (late, and sorry!!!!) Tomorrow is our Thanksgiving celebration (joys of juggling in ex-pat life!). So today, instead of a review, I baked pumpkin pies and did prep, running around to different stores to hit all the ones that offer reasonable veg prices (wow! wallet shock this season...too many typhoons? global warming??), condensed milk and celery! Though found the last two at the same shop for the FIRST time!!Anyway, off to work on the review! Can't wait for the new shelves!
Happy Thanksgiving, Judithe! :DHope everyone has a good holiday week. I'm off to visit Mom & Grandparents. I'll update as I can.
