He is. Has a science fiction book review podcast.
He's free to have his opinion. I'm not sure of the seriousness of his suggestion to reading just the soldier's part (I'm not sure if that means Kaladin or Dalinar) but you probably shouldn't bother reading it if you approach it that way. There's a lot of good stuff in the other viewpoints.
I listened to the audiobook when it came out. I really liked it, but it was really, really long. Fortunately, they used two narrators, one for the women's parts and one for the men's parts. That made it really easy to follow. It probably would have sucked with just one narrator because it would have been difficult to keep track of all the points of view. One of the things I really like about Sanderson is his ability to create really interesting women in his books. If you skip the female POV parts in this book, you will miss a lot of what's going on in the story.
That said, I think the real weakness of The Way of Kings is that it feels like it's mostly world-building and setup. Yes, stuff happens and there's plenty of action, but it doesn't feel like it goes anywhere.

Actually, I've done that at times when rereading Return of the King ;) And, I skimmed Dalinar's parts when I reread Way of Kings. He's not a bad character but lots of his sections are just used for world-building and history teaching so I didn't want to read them twice.

As cheap as that is I would encourage you guys to at least check out the physical copy in your local library. The digital versions just don't have enough fidelity for the drawings and artwork that accompany the text. It was my favorite part of the book seeing all the extra notes and clues that are to be found in those things.
Great price, I just picked it up even though I already own a physical copy. For $1.26 you can't go wrong. Personally Kaladin is my favorite story line as well but I wouldn't forsake the rest of the book, it is entertaining as well.

Because the pictures in the eBook are low-res Brandon put high-res versions on his website for people to download.http://brandonsanderson.com/the-way-o...
