Kara (karaayako) | 3984 comments GOODREADS NOVEMBER EVENTS MINI CHALLENGE
Duration: November 1 - 30, 2013

There are lots of exciting things happening in November both on Goodreads and in this group. This challenge is to get pumped up and celebrate them.

1. The Goodreads Choice Awards. All three rounds of voting are in November to determine the favorite books of 2013 of Goodreads users. For this task, read a book published in 2013. (All books published in 2013 are eligible.)

2. Group Reads. For the first time ever, we have TWO group reads. Read one of the group reads OR read a book that comes with a pair (i.e., a book that has a sequel or prequel).

3. 2014 Yearly Challenges. We'll start posting 2014 challenges this month. Double-dip by reading a book that qualifies for one of our 2013 Yearly Challenges that you're participating in.

4. Secret Santa. We did Secret Santa last year, and we're going to do it again this year! We'll start sign-ups at the end of November. Read a book that makes you think of the holidays, that you received as a gift, or that has been on your wishlist.

-----

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) will be the leader for this challenge. Thank you, Teresa!

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 169 comments Jodi, since you wanted to take a month off, I'd be happy to lead this one. I just didn't see the message about needing a leader until this morning.

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Completed #3 - Yearly Challenges (Every Year Challenge selection 1982) - North and South by John Jakes. While I appreciated the story and characters, the book was much too long and would have been aided by a good editor. Glad that I read a book that was so popular back in the day but do not plan to continue the series. 3 stars

2. Group Reads. For the first time ever, we have TWO group reads. Read one of the group reads OR read a book that comes with a pair (i.e., a book that has a sequel or prequel).

Blood Red Road (Dust Lands, #1) by Moira Young Blood Red Road by Moira Young 11/10/2013 Finished one of the monthly group reads. It is a really quick and easy read, as I think it is targeted for teens. I still thought it was pretty good and gave it 4 stars. I wish more people were reading it. I'm curious to see what people think!

*Not going to be able to finish this challenge. I thought I'd be able to get to a 2013 book and a holiday-themed book, but they just weren't on my list this month.

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 169 comments Glad you enjoyed the book, Brian! I still haven't started it. I intended to during my 3 days off work the past couple of days but as usual, my plans didn't work out the way I'd hoped. November is not over yet so I'll be getting to it eventually and i'll be sure to post about it in the threads.

No worries, Teresa! I had borrowed Blood Red Road from the library last week, along with a bunch of other books I need to read for November challenges/TBR November twin read/etc. Since it was such a page-turner and very fast read, I figured I should just finish that one first, as it only took 2-3 days (in case I might not have time to later) and then add in my comments in the discussion threads once everyone still interested in the book gets caught up.

If you'd like me to offer any suggestions for Discussion Questions to start off each of your chapter threads - just to have conversation starters in place for you and other readers to jump in once they're caught up, I'd be happy to help. It might motivate and encourage more people to join us - especially those who may have finished the other group read Wool Omnibus .

Feel free to let me know here or message me anytime if you'd like me to start off with a question or two (and you of course can totally change the questions if mine are terrible!) :D

Megan (lahairoi) | 7470 comments Completed #4 - Gifted Book (received as a first reads winner) - We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of the American Women Trapped on Bataan. An amazing and inspiring story of courageous nurses! Coming from a family of nurses, I really appreciated the author's thorough research and obvious dedication to her subjects. Definitely worth reading! 4.5 stars

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 169 comments I haven't even finished this challenge. November did not go at all according to plan for me. I haven't even finished Blood Red Road. I'm pretty disappointed, but I'm not going to worry too much about it. Beating myself up for not finishing a book is just silly.

My time was just all wonky in November, plus some issues that kept me off the computer and work hours being all over the place just really put a damper on my reading and on my Goodreads presence.

I'm sorry for not being a better leader for this challenge.

Don't worry about it! I felt the same way about November and only managed to read a few books.
