Evelyn (elare42gmailcom) I've noticed that when I finish a book and really like the main character I wait awhile before starting another one. It's almost like I want to savor thinking about it.

However, if I don't like the character I'll start another book right away. What determines how much time you have between books?

message 2: by Terri (new)

Terri (terrilovescrows) | 28 comments I really never have time between books - always have several going at once

message 3: by David (new)

David Freas (quillracer) | 2376 comments Usually, I start a new book the day after finishing one. I rarely read two books by the same author about the same character back-to-back, always separate them by at least 1 book by someone else. And I alternate my reading. After I read a dark or heavy book, I want something lighter and sometimes separate two mysteries by reading a romantic suspense or some other genre.

message 4: by Veronica (new)

Veronica (readingonthefly) If I really loved a book I might wait a few days before starting another one. It's hard for me to let go of a world or a set of characters when I truly loved reading about them. If a book is just so-so then I can dive right into the next one right away. I generally switch up genres every couple of books or so. I find that it helps me avoid hitting those dreaded reading slumps/ruts. The only exception is if I hit upon characters that I get really invested in and the book is part of a series. In that case I will read every book in the series back-to-back until I'm current with it.

message 5: by Bill (new)

Bill I usually have a couple on the go at any given time and generally start my next book pretty well as soon as I finish one. It doesn't affect me savouring one I have particularly enjoyed.

Your reading style sounds like mine. I too will read a compelte series if I like the story line and characters. For instance, I read the Harry Bosch series and Camel Club right through because I wanted to see what happened next.

Sheila | 15 comments I start immediately.

message 8: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine (saanichlori) | 3645 comments Me too, Sheila. I have the next 3-4 books all ready lined up.

Olivia "So many books--so little time."" | 678 comments I start immediately too.

message 10: by Marie-Jo (new)

Marie-Jo Fortis | 35 comments Looks like we are a majority here. I don't wait, either. I jump on the next wagon asap, as finishing a (good) book implies both joy and sadness.

message 11: by Caroline (new)

Caroline I start immediately on the next book but even just a first chapter. I like to feel that I am 'into' a book before I put it down. Maybe that seems strange (?). I just like to know I always have a story to 'switch Into' anytime I want.

message 12: by Caroline (new)

Caroline I switch from the gritty British crime authors like Martina cole, Mandasue Heller, Kimberly Chambers to the American thrillers such as Chelsea Cain, Karin Slaughter. I don't know why I decide American or British each time.
E.g I have just finished 'The Driver' by Mandasue Heller and I am desperate to go back to Chelsea Cain so I have read the first chapter of 'Let Me Go'!

message 13: by Taylor (new)

Taylor If I'm reading a series, I'll jump right into the next one. If it's a stand alone, I wait until the next day. I need some time to absorb and to switch gears.

message 14: by Leigh (new)

Leigh | 6291 comments I usually have two or three books going at once. I read my first Serge Storms book a few months ago. Since then I have gone from one book to the next. Fortunately, you don't have to read the series in order.

I do try to alternate heavy/dark works with little fair.

message 15: by Curlyhair (new)

Curlyhair | 44 comments Mostly I just read one at a time. But if I finish a I book one day, I'll wait until the next day to start another one. I have to be reading wether it be before bed or sometimes lunch time at work.

message 16: by Linda (new)

Linda (beaulieulinda117gmailcom) | 1403 comments If I finish reading a book at night just before lights out I'll wait til the next day to start a new book. If I finish in the morning or afternoon I start a new one right away.

message 17: by Jennifer (new)

Jennifer (finegael) | 690 comments I'm with Linda. I read every evening to relax just prior to bed; when I finish I start up a new one the next evening. If I am reading during the weekend, then I'll start one up immediately. Assuming I have one and don't need to do a library or bookstore run.

message 18: by Duffy (new)

Duffy (mcduff) | 515 comments I'm within the same mind-set as Linda and Jennifer. I've been reading before bed-time since I was in High School; the best way for me to relax is with a book. I usually know what I want to read before I am done. Right now I am bouncing back and forth between two mystery writers. During the rare times I can't decide right awat, I've been keeping a book of short stories nearby to fill the gaps.

message 21: by Leslie (new)

Leslie (lesmorecats) | 72 comments I normally have two or three going at the same time. When one ends, I usually start another within the day.

message 22: by Leigh (new)

Leigh | 6291 comments I always have something going. I am never not reading a book. If I finish something before I fall asleep, I will start another book right away.

message 23: by Linda (new)

Linda | 1490 comments I tend to be like Leslie - I usually have 2 or 3 going at once. That way if I burn out on a long nonfiction, I can skip to a series or a semi-serious book and then pick up with one of the others, etc. I never have time between books because it's about the only thing that relaxes me. I can't read just before I fall asleep because I can never seem to find a good place to stop and end up staying up way late trying to finish!

message 24: by maria1836 (new)

maria1836 (lilbittx) if it is a mystery I need a couple days in between... if it is humorous or historical I can start a new one right away

message 25: by Melissa (new)

Melissa (mysterymaeven) Like Leslie & Linda I usually have 2-3 books on the go at the same time. One is always an audiobook.

message 26: by Kim (new)

Kim | 2 comments It depends. Usually I just dive straight into the next book in my pile, but sometimes I have that "book hangover" thing, for a day or two. You know--when you were so caught up in a book, or put through such an emotional ringer, you really just want to simmer in that world for a bit before moving on?

If I try reading during that time I do not remember what I have read. I don't absorb a singe word.

Me too, and starting new right away

message 29: by Gina (new)

Gina I always have 2 or 3 going at a time. But, if one has really made an impact, I have to make myself wait a little while just to savor and think on it. By reading one after another like I do, I have a hard time remembering the stories after I've moved on, so that's also why I like to wait, to try to maintain some memory of it. Otherwise, I do read one after another. But, like others, I like to read different genres so I don't get them confused or burn out on a particular one. Now if it's a series, I have to keep reading one after another :)

message 32: by Terra (new)

Terra My TBR stack is tall and I always have at least two being read so I don't wait. I often read a mystery and also a very different book, like nonfiction about living abroad, a biography like The Sisters or Wives of Henry the VIII, or books by C.S. Lewis, or Jane Austen or ...

Ron (ronb626) | 3884 comments Pretty much, immediately. Seldom need, or want, time off between books. Reading in a favorite pastime on mine. So, why would I stop reading just because I'd finished a book. It's not like finishing supper and I'm not hungry again for awhile. With books, my appetite is still alive and hungry for more. Immediately!

Although, I usually take some time off between authors. Seldom read back to back books by the same author. Usually keep a "rotation" of my favorite authors with the occasional insertion of either another liked author or something completely new.

But, I have for trilogies. Read all 3 of the The Lord of the Rings back to back to back. Very hard to not do that with that trilogy.

message 34: by Heather (new)

Heather (trixieplum) | 193 comments I start immediately - My favorite part of finishing a book is rummaging around the shelves for the next one! Until recently, I only read one book at a time - Now, I have several going. But I want to finish them all up and get back to just one at a time. It was, to me, more relaxing.

message 35: by Lucy (new)

Lucy (mesdupmoi) | 635 comments When I near the end of a book I search my shelves (and boxes) for the next to read, unless it is a part of a series.

I start the next book, series or not, immediately after updating goodreads on my finish.

:)

message 36: by Marion (new)

Marion Coro | 189 comments I go into a bit of a panic because I'm never sure I'll find one that will grab me from the start. I get especially anxious if it's nearing bedtime and I don't have any sure picks. Unless there's a new release by a favorite author. Sometimes I'll start those before I'm even finished with the current one -- especially if the current one feels a tad sluggish.

I love that updating Goodreads is part of your process too, Lucy! It's the first thing I do after closing the back cover and taking a moment to let the ending sink in. I never kept lists of finished books before, but I wish I had. There are quite a few "beach reads" I plowed through in HS and college, and I never remember those by title so I frequently end up starting a book and then realizing I read it once years before!

Richard (ricoh) | 30 comments Time to think about our target for 2014. More books than ever that I want to read; I like my "to read" file as I can plan and sure no delay in reading another book

Ron (ronb626) | 3884 comments Heather wrote: "... and I never remember those by title so I frequently end up starting a book and then realizing I read it once years before!"

Oh, I hate it when that happens! I'm just settling in to a "new" book with head filled with how will I like it, how good is this one really, I love this character and am getting a new chapter from him, ...

And, then, the realization that I've read it. All the above come crashing down. Sometimes it's all I've got in the house to read, so what do I do? Usually, it's late at night and I'm reading in bed when I realize I've read it before. Again, what will I do now? It's late. I'm not getting out of bed to find something else to read. So, I read a few chapters before finally putting it down and getting on with the night's rest.

But, in the morning, it's off to find a new book. 1st call? Goodreads list of to-reads! Check off that one at the top because I've already read it. Then, what's the next on the list? Oo... that one! And, I'm back in the game again...

message 40: by David (new)

David Freas (quillracer) | 2376 comments I realized I had to do something when I brought home 3 Dick Francis books from the library and realized I had read all three.

So I started a list in my computer of every book I've ever read listed by author in the order they were written and by title.

I also have a list of books I want to read and I borrow/buy books on it when I hit the library or book store. When I've read the book, I record it in my 'Books Read' list. Then I post a review here on Goodreads.

It saves me a lot of frustration.

Ron (ronb626) | 3884 comments Quillracer wrote: "... So I started a list in my computer of every book I've ever read listed..."

I do pretty much the same thing using my lists here on Goodreads. After I finish a book, I get on Goodreads to 1st mark the book just finished as "read". Then, go to the to-read list to mark the one at the top of that list as "currently reading." As I've already gotten that book from the library and it is ready to go. Then, export my lists and keep that on the computer.

Love this about Goodreads!

message 42: by Leigh (new)

Leigh | 6291 comments I checked my list here on Goodreads last week and realized I had fallen behind on keeping it up to date. I am missing quiet a few books. Ned to be more diligent.

message 43: by Sandra (new)

Sandra | 4 comments After I've marked off a book as "read" on Goodreads, I'll start reading another one -- usually the following day. I prefer to read one book at a time and focus on the characters, especially if I'm reading a mystery. Lots of book choices here on Goodreads in all genres, which can make it hard to decide which one to read next!

☼♎ Carmen the Bootyshaker Temptress ☼♎ | 601 comments Usually when I'm done reading a book I tend to go to the next one but it depends if I have one ready to read. But at other times I take a day or 2 before I decide. It's different if it's a series that I'm enjoying, then I just go to the next one on the series.

message 45: by Ron (new)

Ron (ronb626) | 3884 comments I have a rotation of several authors whom I like to read. I just go on to the next author and get the next book of his that I haven't read.

This rotation is about 10+ long and I intersperse it with "new" authors to keep from just reading the same few people.

Love it when I discover a new author to add to the list. Of course, some of them only make a one time appearance, but, that's OK, too.

Latest "new" addition for me, is John Nesbo. Looks like he'll become a mainstay of the rotation, though. Definitely not a one-and-done for me.

message 46: by Beth (new)

Beth (techeditor) | 1018 comments I used to start another book immediately. Since I started writing book reviews, I wait to start a new book until review the book I just read. I do that ASAP after I've finished a book, so sometimes I start the new book that same day, other times the next day.

message 47: by Lucy (new)

Lucy (mesdupmoi) | 635 comments Depends how many books I have going on at the same time. I've got 6 at the moment lol, but aiming to finish one tonight, at least.

:) x

message 48: by Kay (new)

Kay Faupel | 1028 comments I'm fond of short stories and essays also, sometimes I'll take a break from novels and start reading something else. I like the idea of short stories because it's self contained, the story is told in one sitting. Essays are on such a variety of subjects it's a good way to shake your reading up.
