I'm with you on that, Mike. Once I read two Michael Connelly books in a row and couldn't bring myself to read him for a time afterwards.

I also try to time out my reading so that I finish a book late in the evening (or stay up late to reach the end) then start a new book the next morning.

M.A.R. Unger | 127 comments Hmm. This is hard. As a mystery writer whose main character is a forensic facial reconstruction artist, I need to figure out new cases for her to work on and be involved with (yes, she wants to know who killed her victims and how). So, I'm always reading technical books and investigating methodology. When I read for pleasure, which is less often than I'd like to admit, I'll try to devote afternoons until I finish. Currently I'm ready to start a Morgan St. James book. With stormy weather expected tomorrow….I'll be reading for fun each afternoon until I finish. Then? Further investigation into the nation's FUSION CENTERS (intelligence gathering/sharing).

Rebecca Amiss (rebeccaamiss) | 278 comments I like to start right away. I always have a new book at the ready.

M.A.R. Unger | 127 comments Question for everyone. Do you take time out to enjoy a book you've read before? I do that with Sula by Toni Morrison.

David Freas (quillracer) | 2376 comments M.A.R. wrote: "Question for everyone. Do you take time out to enjoy a book you've read before? I do that with Sula by Toni Morrison."

Yes, but not 1 particular book. I'll read something by one of my favorite authors or a book I haven't read in a while.

Sometimes I do it because something in the book I just finished reminded me of a book I'd read before. Or because I need a change of pace. Example: after reading a fairly dark and complex long story, I'll often pick up one of Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels because they are fast reads.

message 156: by M.A.R. (new)

M.A.R. Unger | 127 comments Guess I keep going back to Sula (and others) because I'm hooked on Morrison's ability to unravel characters like peeling onion skins.

Diane (lemonsky) M.A.R. wrote: "Question for everyone. Do you take time out to enjoy a book you've read before? I do that with Sula by Toni Morrison."

I do that, especially with a favorite author. I may try a different format, though. For example, trying an audio version of "Murder on the Orient Express." It's like experiencing a new book.

message 158: by Marion (new)

Marion Mlodynia | 568 comments I wait a few days, especially if I really enjoyed the book. The characters and events stay with me for a while. Sometimes I even re-read the book, esp. if it's one of Elizabeth Adler's early books, for ex: Fortune is a Woman, Property of a Lady and The Rich shall Inherit. These books are rich in story, events and characters.

message 159: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) It depends on my mood and how soon I have to get a book back to Overdrive or one the digital readers I use.

Jezzy M.A.R. wrote: "Question for everyone. Do you take time out to enjoy a book you've read before? I do that with Sula by Toni Morrison."

yes, i do that esp. when i havent reached yet the deadline to return the library book. so, i still have time to reread the pages that i dog-eared & write those quotes in my journal.

message 161: by Emilee (new)

Emilee Ashline (eashline92) | 16 comments i start a new book immediately. The back of the book or the inside of the cover that describes what the book is about helps me determine what and when I'm gonna start a new book

message 162: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Mclaren | 193 comments I'm a bit of a doddler these days. Probably because I want to think about what the next book should be. When I finished Team of Rivals: The Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln recently, I didn't want to read anything too light but nothing real heavy either. And not about the same time period. So I pulled out three or four, and just kept going back and looking at them before I decided on what would be most appreciated at that point in time. Mostly, I never stop reading ... I just pause before I dig in again.

message 163: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) It depends on my mood. But it's not long.

message 164: by Faouzia (new)

Faouzia | 6 comments In the last 4 or 5 years, i don't think i ever stayed without a book! I usually have 2 or 3 books going on at the same time, and i don't finish them at the same time, so i always have a Currently reading book :)

Paula Leigh wrote: "Kim wrote: "It depends. Usually I just dive straight into the next book in my pile, but sometimes I have that "book hangover" thing, for a day or two. You know--when you were so caught up in a book..."

Same here! Sometimes I can dive right into the next book, sometimes not. One of the main characters in The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield said it perfectly, “All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”

What a great description! I'll have to remember that. When I was younger, I never thought too much about it, but these days, I do some mulling over the choices (of course that's because I currently have more than 100 books either beside the bed, under the love seat or on the Kindle). It was far easier when I went to the library had checked out five; when you finished one, you just went to the next one!

message 167: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (diggensjenny) I start new book Immediately!

message 168: by Betsy (new)

Betsy | 11558 comments I have 3 going on at once, 2 on the Kindle and the other is a printed book so I'm never without.

Tom Kane (tigerbites) | 2 comments Right away. No time to waste.

message 170: by H.E. (new)

H.E. Bulstrode (goodreadscomhebulstrode) | 3 comments I've got into the 'bad' habit of reading several books concurrently, with the result that one of them tends to be read rather quickly, whereas the others may take months to get through. I tend to mix genres as well as fact and fiction, so I always have recourse to something appropriate to read in keeping with how my mood takes me.

message 171: by Marie (new)

Marie I sometimes read two books at once from different genres, so when I finish one or the other, I have another book ready to go.

message 172: by Daniel (new)

Daniel (beardednomad51) at present my TBR stack is actually six columns of books with the average column size about 20. So i generally jump into a book immediately after finishing one.

That said I do like to start a new book on a new day so try to plan to end a book in the evening.

I also like to space out my authors and read what ever strikes my fancy. I dont know about you guys but I find if I read a whole series one after another by the middle to end of the series (Depending on how many books there are) I kind of get really bored of all the characters.

Anyone else like that?

message 173: by Mara (new)

Mara Pemberton (marapem) It depends on my mood and depends on how soon a book I have downloaded from one of the libraries use needs to be returned. And sometimes I just a break from a listening to books for a few days.

message 174: by Chris (new)

Chris Baez (chrisbaez) | 239 comments Immediately. Due to the fact that there are people who leave a book halfway because they found a better one, and I was one of them, I have made it my own policy to finish the book I'm presently reading before I can start the next one; a self imposed discipline that has worked very well for me. So I start the next book on the day I finish one, I may take a few hours off but I will read at least the intro and a few pages.

I also start another book right away, and yes, like you I find it is better to read 1-2 books in between those in a series, or I get bored with the characters! I won't read more than 2 books in a series back-to-back, before taking a break with an unrelated book. :D

That is a good poll question!

message 176: by David (new)

David Freas (quillracer) | 2376 comments I never read 2 books by the same author in a row.

I did that once with one of my favorite writers and couldn't read another of his books for months.

Perhaps that they were two of his darker books in the series had something to do with it.

Like many others here, I try to pace out my reading so I finish a book late in the day then start the next one the following morning.

message 177: by Karen (new)

Karen (karen94066) | 364 comments I've got about 20 library books out at any one time, so the deadlines loom and I start another book right away, unless it is bedtime.

message 178: by Diana (new)

Diana I usually start another book right away.

message 179: by Arlene (new)

Arlene | 16 comments I usually start a book right away and like a lot of the others I read a few books in between a series.

message 180: by Diane (new)

Diane Keen | 3 comments I've never been able to read more than one book at a time, in the same way I find it impossible to multitask in every other aspect of my life. Same as reading whilst walking, there's a woman who lives on my lane who does that frequently, how?

Erm, back to the question, if the book was great I'll take some time to get over it, like the end of a relationship or something.

Yuliya (yuliyalovestoread) | 203 comments I'm starting right away, and I'm listening book on my way and doing work, I also have several books to read at the same time. I like multitasking and multireading

message 182: by Diane (new)

Diane (lemonsky) Basically, I'm never without some kind of book - print, kindle or audio. I'm the very definition of a bookworm. It's also normal for me to be reading (or listening) to more than one book at a time. I have a problem focusing on just one thing for long periods of time. That's probably why I like short stories so much.

message 183: by Belinda (new)

Belinda Friedland | -1 comments I start reading immediately! I haven't watched TV or movies - I prefer to use my own imagination as to the chatacters and scenery.

message 184: by Deb (new)

Deb (debr) I always start a new book immediately upon finishing the last. I will also sometimes read more than one at a time, or listen to an audio book to and from work, while actually reading a different book in my free time.

message 185: by Michael (new)

Michael Radwan II I usually have 1 audio book and 2 paper books. Usually I always start a new book because I have so many to read.

message 186: by Cassie (new)

Cassie Myers I usually have a couple going at one time as well, but I immediately start a new one as soon as I finish. I hate it when I finish a book at work and have to wait a few hours to get home, before I can start a new one. I also always have a shelf full (10-12 books) in my home, waiting to be read.

message 187: by Margaret (new)

Margaret Wichorek | -324 comments Immediately. I always have another book ready to pick up.

message 188: by Scout (new)

Scout (goodreadscomscout) | 486 comments Right away. I try to have one ready, but don't always make it to the library in time. In that case, I'll go to Walmart and pick one up. Can't be without a book on my pillow.

Dorie - Cats&Books :) (dorie--catsbooks) Right away, I can't be without something to read. I also am usually working on listening to an audiobook when I'm sewing or cleaning or what not.

message 190: by Pamela (new)

Pamela Mclaren | 193 comments I agree with all of you that it usually is immediately. The only exception is if a book was particularly heavy or thought provoking. Usually because I need time to think about what I have read, how I would explain it and tell others about it.

Luvtoread (Trying to catch up) | 4042 comments Immediately or same day

message 192: by Bicky (new)

Bicky | 35 comments Immediately and I like to read books in a series one after the other.

message 193: by Janet M (new)

Janet M (pianogal) | 7 comments Glad this topic is still open! Guess I too am a book addict as I get panicky if I don't have another one lined up as I'm finishing my read. But I find I enjoy my next book more if I've taken the time to write my review of the previous one first, while it's fresh in my mind.

message 194: by Lilysun (new)

Lilysun I start a new book immediately. I always have seven on loan from Overdrive with five on hold. Right now I have 179 on my wait list. Lol

message 195: by Cherry (new)

Cherry (bookwormdiva) I normally start a new book a day later, unless I finished the previous one early in the morning and would then start a new one by lunch time or later in the afternoon.

message 196: by Denise (new)

Denise Mullins | 516 comments Depending on the time of day I've finished the previous one, either a few hours or by the next afternoon. It also depends how curious/motivated I am about my next selection.

message 197: by Lagniappe (new)

Lagniappe | 12 comments As I usually have two or three books in progress at any given time I am rarely really finished. When I complete one I will almost immediately choose its replacement and add it into the mix.

Denise Mullins | 516 comments Lagniappe wrote: "As I usually have two or three books in progress at any given time I am rarely really finished. When I complete one I will almost immediately choose its replacement and add it into the mix."
I used to be able to do this, but as I get older- and authors have a tendency to add more characters- it's easier for me to keep the storyline and cast of characters clear in my mind.

I am usually reading multiple books too, so as soon as I finish one I just throw another one into the pile.
