When you finish a book how quickly do you start another one?

Yes, but not 1 particular book. I'll read something by one of my favorite authors or a book I haven't read in a while.
Sometimes I do it because something in the book I just finished reminded me of a book I'd read before. Or because I need a change of pace. Example: after reading a fairly dark and complex long story, I'll often pick up one of Robert B. Parker's Spenser novels because they are fast reads.

I do that, especially with a favorite author. I may try a different format, though. For example, trying an audio version of "Murder on the Orient Express." It's like experiencing a new book.

yes, i do that esp. when i havent reached yet the deadline to return the library book. so, i still have time to reread the pages that i dog-eared & write those quotes in my journal.

Same here! Sometimes I can dive right into the next book, sometimes not. One of the main characters in The Thirteenth Tale by Diane Setterfield said it perfectly, “All morning I struggled with the sensation of stray wisps of one world seeping through the cracks of another. Do you know the feeling when you start reading a new book before the membrane of the last one has had time to close behind you? You leave the previous book with ideas and themes -- characters even -- caught in the fibers of your clothes, and when you open the new book, they are still with you.”

What a great description! I'll have to remember that. When I was younger, I never thought too much about it, but these days, I do some mulling over the choices (of course that's because I currently have more than 100 books either beside the bed, under the love seat or on the Kindle). It was far easier when I went to the library had checked out five; when you finished one, you just went to the next one!

That said I do like to start a new book on a new day so try to plan to end a book in the evening.
I also like to space out my authors and read what ever strikes my fancy. I dont know about you guys but I find if I read a whole series one after another by the middle to end of the series (Depending on how many books there are) I kind of get really bored of all the characters.
Anyone else like that?

I also start another book right away, and yes, like you I find it is better to read 1-2 books in between those in a series, or I get bored with the characters! I won't read more than 2 books in a series back-to-back, before taking a break with an unrelated book. :D
That is a good poll question!

I did that once with one of my favorite writers and couldn't read another of his books for months.
Perhaps that they were two of his darker books in the series had something to do with it.
Like many others here, I try to pace out my reading so I finish a book late in the day then start the next one the following morning.

Erm, back to the question, if the book was great I'll take some time to get over it, like the end of a relationship or something.

I used to be able to do this, but as I get older- and authors have a tendency to add more characters- it's easier for me to keep the storyline and cast of characters clear in my mind.

I am usually reading multiple books too, so as soon as I finish one I just throw another one into the pile.

I'm with you on that, Mike. Once I read two Michael Connelly books in a row and couldn't bring myself to read him for a time afterwards.
I also try to time out my reading so that I finish a book late in the evening (or stay up late to reach the end) then start a new book the next morning.
