What a great start to this part of the book. Jules is in the airlock waiting to go out to cleanse. It made me go OMG! What happened? And really made me want to devour the next hundred or so pages of this part to find out what happened.
In the post I made in part 2 I pondered whether Jules would live long as the other two narrators died - I hope I didn't jinx it!?! Only time will tell!
I thought it was interesting how Jules commented how the people up top have very different ways of thinking and views on things compared to the people who live in the depths of the Silo. I wonder whether the "view" has something to do with being constantly reminded that there is an outside world while those down below just get on and make the most of their life in the silo.
So I still hate Bernard he has to be prime suspect for the Mayor's death especially now that we have found out that the PACT states that he becomes acting Mayor as a result of the previous Mayors demise. He had a lot to gain from her death.
I really like Lukas. I'm pleased that Jules has found someone up top to talk to help her settle in to her new environment.
In Chapter 21 Marnes hangs himself. Or does he?!? I can't help thinking that it was staged. Yes he was upset at the loss of the Mayor but I think its more likely he was got rid of. He was (possibly?!?) the intended target instead of the Mayor, and with that failure he is on the search to find out "whodunit" and what with Jules now having the Sheriff job, IT don't have a man on the inside. Get rid of Marnes, put someone in they want - job done! Or maybe I'm just suspicious and paranoid! What do you guys think?
Scottie was so terrified about knowing the information that they did and feared for his life. I felt really sorry for him. I was and I wasn't surprised to find out that he later turns up dead - another apparent suicide! They seem to be dropping like flies. I wasn't surprised that Jules was arrested - any excuse to get rid of her. Bernard never wanted her in the role of Sheriff in the first place so now she's back in Mechanical and Peter is Sheriff exactly as he'd planned. He's so conniving!
Another interesting point Jules makes is about how expensive the wired messages are in comparison to porters and how this makes communication within the Silo more difficult in order to keep people from talking, sharing thoughts and ideas etc. This is so true - think of North Korea and other places where the Internet is banned or restricted.
In Chapter 27 we find out that IT have been engineering the cleaning suits to fail. I know there was a "hint" earlier in the book with regards to the tape that Jules intercepted from IT being no good. Did anyone else get the significance of this earlier on? I hadn't so this was a big surprise to me which was great. No wonder Bernard had it in for Jules all this time if she had known about the tape (although not knowing it's intended use or effect). Why make a suit that can fail? The plot thickens!
Jules is arrested AGAIN! Why did they bother letting her go the first time round knowing full well they would have her up there again in no time? I felt so sorry for Lukas visiting Jules in the cells, admitting how he felt about her.
I am pleased Walker sent that little note to Jules before her cleaning, hopefully it helped her to feel less fearful of what was about to happen. I'm pleased she didn't clean and just wandered off up over the hill. I think she should have used her finger to write some kind of message on the lenses for all the people in the silo to see, condemning Bernard/IT. I couldn't help but laugh at Bernard stewing and getting angry.
What a revelation at the end of this part! More Silos! At least 18! Plus a way of communicating between them! It did make me wonder why the IT guy knew all this yet the Mayor didn't?!?
