10B Week 8 Discussion

This week, Orlando and I would like you to think broadly about your book and the characters in them. Every book is set in a particular time or place, and this setting reflects social, cultural, and economic realities. Please discuss the notable racial, cultural, gender, sexual, or socio-economic factors at play in the book? How do any of these factors affect the characters? Do you think these factors were realistically portrayed?

(Example: In Fahrenheit 451, there doesn't seem to be any obvious or outward poverty, and everyone seems to be equally middle class or something similar. Also, there is no mention of anyone's skin color, race, or ethnicity. Everyone seems to be white and straight. This doesn't fit with the idea of a large metropolis such as the one described in the book. It also doesn't seem reasonable that there should be no discussion about any economic pressures affecting this society beyond the general statement that "the rest of the world is poor and we're not." In this sense, the book seems to be a bit one-dimensional, unrealistic, and less than "quality," to use Faber's term.)

I am reading American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis. My book is set in the late 1980's during the Wall Street Boom. The main character is Patrick Bateman. He is a very wealthy caucasian male. He lives on Wall Street and has an affinity for conspicuous consumption, murdering and torturing people, and narcissism. Bateman is never satisfied. His bloodlust is insatiable and at times he can be dramatic. On page 39 it says: "I'm on the verge of tears by the time we arrive at Pastels since I'm positive we won't get seated but the table is good, and relief that is almost tidal in scope washes over me in an awesome wave." I think that these factors were realistically portrayed as I've been told this is very characteristic of this time.

I am reading Pop by GordonKorman. This book is set in present day time. The main characters are Charlie,Marcus and a profootball player which is marcus friend which helps him along the way. There is a part were he gets hit and i think that relates to present day football because there are and have been many cases were pro football players that get hit and they are career ending injuries so I think this book trys to revel this message in the book.

In Out of My Mind, by Sharon M. Draper, it doesn't matter which time does it take place. It may take place somewhere between New York City, or New Jersey. The characters are not talked about races (skin color), factors, gender, their cultural facts, or what kind of class they are in. It doesn't matter to these characters. They talk about medical diseases or disabilities. Nobody discriminates them.

in Hide and Seek there are girl twins one died so one is a ghost and they have brown hair and blue eyes and this book is present day time. the alive sister just started college and is pretending to be her dead sister with her dead sisters boyfriend and everything nobody knows who killed her that is what the alive sister is trying to figure out and the dead sister is mad about it.

The book im reading is candy by kevin brooks and this is london and the main character is joe and he falls in love with this girl name candy on the train in the afternoon , this is a connection just like 451 when montag and clarrise meets

I am Zlatan Ibrahimovic
i am reading "i am zlatan" and the book dousnt really go through any cultural ways but theres a lot of social times with the main character Zlatan Ibrahimovic. Since this book is a bio, zlatan talks about what he goes through in life and all of his hardships he had to face.

The book that I am reading is called The promise and the main character is Courtland and the other character is names Aidan and they meet in a store called Forever 21 where Aidan had taken his younger sister to go and get herself a dress for her first day of school and Courtland finds Aidan handsome and they meet in a store. This reminds me of when Montag and Clarrise first met in the train and when they also walked home together.

The setting of my book, "The Unwritten Rule" is in a high school. The story talks about high school students that go all around to different places. The main character is Sarah and her best friend is Briana. It seems like it's in New Jersey, not like the city because there are houses, and they use cars a lot. Their high school is one big high school and they have a football field and that isn't something you would find in the city. The setting impacts the story because the story is a typical high school kind of story. For example, there is a conflict between the two main characters because Briana is popular and pretty and she ends up going out with Sarah's crush, Ryan. This makes Sarah jealous.
