Seek books with settings that have Malthusian population control like in Sliders TV episode when characters visit utopian earth -- that was my introduction to Malthus.

Harry Harrison's Make Room! Make Room!, later made into the movie Soylent Green, is another.
And then there's Logan's Run from 1967 (the novel, not the movie, which changes the context). This was, I believe, a theme that was pretty popular in the 1960s and 1970s, before actual data started coming that indicated population growth was leveling off - or even dropping - in advanced industrial societies.
