scherzo♫ (pjreads) | 83 comments Children's book about violin maker or violin
- probably shelved as picture book
- beautifully illustrated
- borrowed from Inglewood CA public library in '70s
- story located in Italy, perhaps Cremona

I See a Song? From 1973.
"Brightly colored forms represent music played by the violin."

E.T.A. Hoffmann has a story called "The Cremona Violin." I don't know what age range it's intended for - perhaps it was adapted into a picture book?

Not I See a Song. Eric Carle was one of my daughter's favorites, but the illustrations in the violin book were muted dreamy colors, closer to realism that Carle's collages.

Not The Cremona Violin.

Most likely between 1974 and 1979, before 1982.

message 7: by scherzo♫ (new)

scherzo♫ (pjreads) | 83 comments I think the story involved making a violin.

The book was about 12" x 10".

laurenpie | 131 comments Other than publication date, The Moon's Revenge fits. Main character does make a violin, and the illustrations are beautiful. Published in 1987. He ends up, though, with a beautiful violin from the ocean, which then replaces the home-made one he had practiced on for many years. Lovely fantasy story.

The Moon's Revenge does look beautiful, but it's not the book I remember. Thanks for the suggestion. I'll check the Gorgeous Picture Books list that's linked for that book page.

Wow pjreads. You've really been being busy. :o)

Still, keep your toes crossed (not your fingers, you need those to bump up the thread here) and keep trying. Sooner or later that someone special will join the group and go, "Oh, I know that book."

message 16: by Tab (new)

Tab (tabbrown) | 5084 comments Pjreads, do you remember anything else about the plot? Was this a magical violin? Was the story a fantasy, fairy tale, etc? Remember any other characters?

message 17: by scherzo♫ (new)

scherzo♫ (pjreads) | 83 comments Mostly I remember the pictures.

I think the story was about ordinary people and an ordinary violin. It may have been historical fiction about a luthier similar to Stradivarius, the Amatis, or the Guarneris.

Probably higher age level than a picture book, because some pages may have had a paragraph of text.

I think many pages had full-page illustrations.

Thanks for helping me hunt.

night music -- bring on the clowns ♫ if you bump your thread up periodically--the usual time period is 30 to 90 days--you will have a better chance at getting it found, since new members will see it, and members that only touch base occasionally will also see it.

Thanks for the suggestion. Looks like a beautiful book about a boy learning to play the violin.

The book I'm looking for is about violin maker(s).

Guarneri: story of a genius by Leonard Wibberley
Juvenile fiction from title page.

Italian violin makers by Karel Jalovec.

Non-fiction from a quick glance. Several mentions of Cremona if that helps identify whom your book was about.

Thanks for the suggestions.

The book I'm looking for is a large size (9x12?) children's book with colorful pictures that fill the page. I'm not sure how much text was on the page, more than one sentence I think, maybe one paragraph?

I read this to my daughter in the 70's so I don't remember details.
