This ones longer, but it looks like still 42 chapters. Same pace? (More reading, but same chapter amount [6 per day]?) Or change?
LOL! I know, shocking right? I'm being a Ness buddy read stalker! I too just finished More Than This, a good read, but not quite to the level of Chaos Walking or A Monster Calls, for me anyway :) But it was well worth my time!
I am not sure about this trilogy. It's weird, because I usually trust David's opinion. But I really felt like the last book unraveled in the ending chapters. I gave it three stars. I am hoping that this one is more my style.I have been looking forward to reading these books for a while, and I really wanted to love them.
*! Alyssia yeah its not 100% my style either. But it introduced so many things that can come into play that I'm excited for the rest.
Looks like I won't get this book until Tues evening. So I will be doing a little catch up!
I'm a super slow reader and still working on the last one but I'm going to follow along here once I get around to it :)

It wasn't until the work of art was finished that I realized how special it truly was. I hope I've converted you by the end!
Courtney wrote: "Tracey have you read book one? Glad you're joining!"Yes Courtney I have. It took me a minute in the beginning to get into it but then it took off. I can't wait to start this one. So when are you guys starting?
We are supposed to start tommorrw-Mon. I can't start until Tues evening. If you are anything like me and read a lot it shouldn't be too hard for you to catch up! The last half of the first book was hard to put down!
Ahhh. I have been unavailable this weekend so I still need to finish the first one. Will so today! How far are you with this one?
We were gonna start today. But becca isn't done either and Courtney won't have her book until tomorrow. Want to start tomorrow instead?
6 chapters a day, Tuesday til Monday?
No one's talking. Hmm, well, let's see.
The mayor. An interesting villain. Reading him is sorta rough, because he's so good at emotional abuse and control tactics, it's an uncomfortable flashback to my childhood.
I like that you can almost believe him, almost sympathize with him, even as you know that he's all about controlling people through fear and small rewards. He's trying to be father to the whole town - punisher and liberator.
When you expect cruelty, even unearned cruelty, not receiving it feels like a gift. You become thankful for even the most basic kindnesses.
I'm wondering if the life saved wasn't his.
I'm wondering a lot about the story with Prentisstown and Haven and how it keeps changing.
I like the idea of constructed truths - and the Noise is great for that ... I think the Noise is an excellent 'symbol' of human's own self-delusion and denial.
In this context, the end of the last book isn't quite as annoying.
I like thinking about the Noise as someone's version of reality - I think what's happening with Todd's fight to control the "real" story about Aaron is interesting. His Noise is hardwired to a lie now - it's instantaneous.
No wonder this planet is full of different stories.
I don't trust the healer one bit. It seems to me she's playing a game similar to the mayor's. Part of me expects them to be in league together.
In a planet full of noise, I suppose getting someone to answer your questions is both redundant and incredibly powerful.
The answer becomes a choice and a submission.
And it seems like such an easy thing to give up.
I feel very bad for the spackle. stupid humans.
alright, well, those are my thoughts. I haven't finished today's chapters and probably won't get through the rest until tomorrow. Wednesday is my busy day. Hopefully when I come back there will be some chatting.
AWESOME thoughts! Really enjoyed reading through those, Alyssia :) And my favorite line "In this context, the end of the last book isn't quite as annoying." Ha! That cracked me up :) Glad you're enjoying it and seeing the complexities of the characters and world that Ness created. It only gets more complex/confusing from here, so hang on!
Thanks David!Looking forward to hearing from you Courtney.
If you guys want to adjust speed, just let me know.
I am up for whatever.
I tend to read five or so books at a time, so it doesn't really affect me what speed we buddy read at.
Alrighty, I just got done with that huge chunk lol Alyssia I'm totally with you on the Mayor and the healer. I think Ness is showing us human nature and what it will do when people think they are in the right. I'm so bummed about the Spackle. Very sad. Although they are quite seeming as innocent as before but maybe they would be if they weren't being treated like that! I'm curious to see where their story goes and which side or not that they end up taking. So I have absolutely no clue why the Answer would (view spoiler) Maybe there's more to it than just what Viola is thinking. I hope at least that question is answered in tomorrow's reading.
I will do fine at this pace now that I have caught up. :-) Always flexible.
Also I just got book 3 yesterday, so its ready to go!
I agree about the Mayor but not so much about the healer. I just believe she is trying to get ahead of the game, learn all the info she can about the Mayor and what he is capable of and then find out if Viola's people will be able to help them.
Courtney wrote: "Also Alyssia I tried adding you as a friend but it wouldn't let me :-/"I don't know why... try again?
I have a question you have to answer, but other than that, it should work...
Blowing up the tower is all about control.Maybe they aren't on the same side, but they certainly both play the same games - scare tactics, rumor and emotional manipulation.
I'm fairly disappointed in both Viola and Todd. I have to keep reminding myself of how young they are.
And even when you realize you're being manipulated, it's still a far cry from being able to do anything about it, I suppose.
I don't have too much to say about today's readings.
I'm finding the former Mayor very interesting. And Corrine.
For right now, they are my protagonists. Todd and Viola can try to earn their places back by not being stupid and/or boring.
David wrote: "Hehehe! This is so fun watching you all experience this!"glad you're enjoying yourself!
cheater :P
Tracy wrote: "I think the healer, darn what's her name, is [spoilers removed]"Ooh, I like that idea A LOT.
That is a good idea! If that's true tho, I'm surprised the Mayor didn't imprison her with the old mayor and Todd. I'm glad (view spoiler) I trust him and I wanna see more with him. I'm nervous about the Spackle. They are worrying me lol
The whole thing is very Stockholme. The tactics that the Mayor is using on Todd and the ones that Mistress Coyle is using on Viola. And the possibility of the two trusting each other shrinks as they each have to compromise themselves. And of course, we know, cognitive dissonance-wise, banality of evil-wise, that these compromises are what lead people to throw themselves in whole-heartedly.
I haven't read yesterday's reading yet. I fell asleep and slept 11 hours. I'll catch up today.
I got way behind this weekend! I got to see my family and I never even picked it up! I will catch up today and be back!

Do we want to put off starting the last one for a few days? I have a busy week, so I wouldn't mind that. Does anyone want to weigh in?
Sounds good.So Friday is my birthday and I will be out of town for the weekend.
For me, starting Monsters of Men on Monday would be ideal.
Is that too late for everyone else?
Don't forget, there's a 2.5:
Its not a problem for me. :-) I typically don't read any .5's until after. When is everyone else going to fit it in?
I'll read it sometime this week probably.Although maybe I shouldn't. The first .5 really colored the way I read book one.
