Hi Bill, I really enjoyed Jar City A Reykjavik Thriller which I think was the first one in this series, or at least the first one in English. Have you read The Draining Lake?

Donna, I have read the first three books inthe Indrioason series, but haven't gotten to The Draining Lake yet. By the way, Jar City was made into a film in Iceland and is available from Netflix or Blockbuster. Not as good as the book in my opinion, but still fascinating to actually see the settings in Iceland.
Halfway through The Black Tower I realized that I had read it before, so skimmed through to the end!!! Now reading a new author to me Black Seconds by Karin Fossum. It's about a 9yr old who gets on her bike to buy sweets and never returns. Not my usual choice of book, and will be an emotional read.

Thanks for the info about the movie version. I just added it to my Netflix queque.

I'd like to say that I'm still reading A Beautiful Blue Death, but since the arrival of my first grandchild, granddaughter Isabella Marie, on Thursday morning, I haven't had much time or desire to do anything but focus on her. It's true what all grandparents say, grandchildren are the greatest.
Had to park Edgar Sawtelle... started out really well, but I lost interest. Will get back to it after I have chipped away at my bookring pile...
so will start The Earth Hums in B Flat a YA mystery set in 1950s Wales. Has anyone read it?

It's not been a week I could really relax and enjoy reading... just about finished with Corelli's Mandolin. Life is crazier with school in (too many kid activities to cart progeny to and fo).
Fiona wrote: "I am reading The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larrson. It started off a bit slow for 50-70 pages but then took off so fast I forget to stop reading!"
I'm currently reading The Girl who Played with Fire.
This book is even better that Tattoo. I highly recommend it.
Kathy, congratulations Grandma! Beautiful name too, I love it.I just started reading The Wizards by Lev Grossman, and it's really good so far.
Congrats, Kathy! Not reading a mystery at the moment - enjoying Freedom Just Around the Corner A New American History 1585-1828, though.
Kathy: I didn't see your message before so I will add my congragulatons now ... Auguri! we say here in Italy.
Isabella is the name I would have given my son, had he been a girl instead of a boy. Love that name.

Oh, Hayes, that makes the name sound even more interesting, that it is one intriguing enough for Italy. When my daughter told me that they were thinking about the name Isabella, it just hit me that it was what my granddaughter was meant to be named.
Just finished The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane by Katherine HoweI really enjoyed this one about a Harvard graduate who while starting her dissertation is asked to clean up her Mom's abandoned house near Salem, Massachusetts. She finds an ancient family Bible which holds a key. In the key is the name "Deliverance Dane." This story bounces between present day to the time of the Salem witch trials. An excellent story! I gave it 4 stars on goodreads.
Lori wrote: "Im reading The Count of Monte Cristo, this could count as a crime.... hee hee.. sort of... the main guy is in jail for a crime he didnt commit... hee hee"I adore "The Count of Monte Cristo." One of my all-time favorite books!
Allison wrote: "I just started Silent In The Grave last night, I like what I've read so far, I'm looking forward to getting into it today!"I really enjoyed both the first and second in this series but my wife recently bought the third...how am I supposed to carry this one around without hiding the cover from my friends?! :)
Silent On The Moor
I just finished listening to Mankell's Dogs of Riga. I am totally hooked right now on Henning Mankell's books. I'm reading the third book of his next.
I'm reading The Watcher in the Pine by Rebecca Pawel. It's the third book in her Inspector Tejada series set in Spain just after the Spanish Civil War and just before WW II.
For some light late night reading I am also enjoying A Reconstructed Corpse by Simon Brett. This is the first of his books that I've read and it is quite enjoyable.

I have finished Black Seconds, a fabulous book and will look for more from this author. Now reading Scaredy Cat by Mark Billingham. He is one of my favourite authors.

Yeah, I hated the covers too... and I'll be interested in what you think of book #3-- I was slightly disappointed... not enough mystery for me.

LOL, Kevin. I was not too happy with the cheesy cover for the third one either. I enjoyed all three in the series, but I think the 2nd one might be the best one for the mystery. I think Heidi is right when she states that the 3rd one might not have had enough mystery in it, but relationships were somewhat resolved.
Heidi and Kathy...thanks for the feedback. I will probably still read this one. I may have to hide it in a cover of something extremely literary so I look brilliant as I am reading it! :)

Hi Heather,
I have had great luck with the B & N picks. Has anyone read The Thirteenth Tale ? This was another book from B & N picks that was a winner.
Happy reading!
Just started reading "Die for me" by Karen Rose.Never read her before.Starts of well, in fact with a murder. Other chracters apparently not having any link with the murder make their appearance. I suppose the link will eventually be made. Quite an intersting way to start a novel. Will keep you all updated as I move through the book.
Heather wrote: "Kevin, I read The Thirteenth Tale after I saw it featured on B&N too :) It was a great book and one I'm wanting to re-read at some point. I loved the gothic feel that it had!"I also thought The Thirteenth Tale was a really good read... especially as a book lover.

stretchy book cover LOL
It is a non-fiction book for me this time. Castaway by Lucy Irvine. I will get back to you other group members when I have read this.
I just started Death on the Nevskii Prospekt by David Dickinson. So far so good. Interesting setting in Tsarist Russia.
I finished The Watcher in the Pine by Rebecca Pawel and really enjoyed it. I do not know a lot about Spanish history so I had to Google a few things but that is fine by me, a good mystery and a little education too.

I finished "the girl with the dragon tattoo" I am trying to decide whether I should follow-up with "The Girl Who Played with Fire" or start the novel I recommended "The Likeness" by tana French....decisions, decisions. Oh, by the way I loved the girl with D T or have I mentioned that.
Janice wrote: "I finished "the girl with the dragon tattoo" I am trying to decide whether I should follow-up with "The Girl Who Played with Fire" or start the novel I recommended "The Likeness" by tana French......."I am starting the Gilr woh Played with Fire this weekend! I say read the shorter one first (whichever that may be)
Hi Janice, Did you read In the Woods which is the first book by Tana French? What did you think of it?
I'm currently reading Ann Parker's Leaden Skies. I enjoyed the first book in this historical mystery series, but for some reason I'm having a difficult time getting into this, the third book. I'll keep at it though.
Donna wrote: "Hi Janice, Did you read In the Woods which is the first book by Tana French? Was it good? In the Woods I mean.
Hi everyone I am new to the group - I love reading a good mystery. Just to comment on the current books in the discussion - I have read The Girl With the dragon..., Silent in the Grave and In The Woods. I found GWTDT a bit hard to get started but once I adopted to the style and the characters I really enjoyed it. I loved Silent in the Grave and the second book - just finished the 3rd book and I was disappointed. In The Woods was good - but not the my favorite. I am currently reading An Empty Death by Laura Wilson - takes place in the final year of WWII and it follows the two central characters a police detective and a character who is changing his identity to place himself as a physician which he belives will give him everything he has never had. It will not end well.
Welcome, Nancy! You're not alone in having a hard time beginning GWTDT. His books tend to start slowly and build. I started the sequel but had a hard time and set it aside. I'm told it gets better though, so I hope to pick it back up and try again soon.Meanwhile I just started Mind Scrambler A John Ceepak Mystery by Chris Grabenstein. I always enjoy his books.

Yes, In the Woods was terrific. I read it for a book group at the local bookstore and the discussion was really interesting. I don't want to give anything away but there was a split decision on the ending. I know many of the characters continue on in The Likeness but I don't know if you have to read them in order.

Hayes wrote: "Finishing up Ngaio Marsh and will start tomorrow on The Shadow of the Wind... is this a mystery? I just looked at the blurb, I thought it was fantasy!"I read The Shadow of the Wind when it first came out -my memory is that the publisher's information on the book is very misleading - the beginning is excellent but it is much more of a character study - and a deep look into Spain. I did enjoy it but I would not call it a mystery.
Hayes wrote: "Finishing up Ngaio Marsh and will start tomorrow on The Shadow of the Wind... is this a mystery? I just looked at the blurb, I thought it was fantasy!"PS - I love Ngaio Marsh - I just discovered her a few years ago - and I love her stories.
Tracey wrote: "It is a non-fiction book for me this time. Castaway by Lucy Irvine. I will get back to you other group members when I have read this."I read this when it first came out in paperback - think I actually bought it at the airport!
I thought the writing style was a bit ponderous for such a light subject and, to be honest, by the end I felt sorry for the poor guy who was stuck on the island with her.
