What Are You Reading? June 2009-Mar 2010

I have decided to take a break from Mystery novels for some time and move on to Biographies. Surprisingly got hold of a book titled "The Book". It literally is a biography of a book from papyrus scrolls to ebooks. Looks exciting.
Sad to be missing this group for a while. Will be back as soon as I again start with mystery novels.

I read that a month or two ago... really loved it... he's a thinking..."
I don't think I've seen them, although I have seen most of the Inspector Lewis episodes, and I really like them. I would definitely be interested in watching the Morse episodes.
Just starting Spellman Files... I love it already. Very amusing.
The bookrings always arrive in twos and threes, so I have The Physick Book of Deliverance Dane waiting for me too. They might be too similar to read together, but I will try...

I didn't like it too much. It kept repeating and repeating and after a while she could have ksut finished the book but wrote anothe rpart of the same length.

I read Absent in the spring. It is completely different to her other stories but i liked it.

That story is soooo good! When I visited Oxford I went to the street that was mentioned in the story...

Esther, I re and re and resaw all the episodes.Even now i don't mind rewatching them:-)))

Lobstergirl, another great story you are reading!

Why can't anyone write a strong female character who isn't completely hopeless at relationships?

That was my first Elizabeth George, and one of my favorites.

I think it was the first one I read, too. Then I started to read them in order.

Because we knew Oxford so well my parents used to have fun catching inconsistencies. Due to problems of logistics and closing down busy streets in chase scenes they would often have the actors running/driving from one picturesque street into another when in reality the two streets were miles away from one another :0)

'Where the Sun Sets' read it for free @ www.authorannmarie.com
Finished the Spellmans... very amusing, but it could have been a little shorter. Continuing Deliverance Dane. Good, but not great, but I'm still in the early stages... will change genres and start I, Claudius

Finished A Beautiful Place to Die and really enjoyed it. A good mystery but also a very interesting setting in South Africa just as the aparthied laws came into force in the early 1950s.
For a change of pace I have started Odd Thomas and I am really enjoying it. Not my usual type of mystery but so far very good.

Don't let anything else catch you first. The Coroner's Lunch is wonderful - funny, clever, evocative of a different place and time, great characters...It was one of my top ten reads of last year.

I agree. Dr. Siri Paiboun is terrific.

I'm glad to hear good things about 'The Coroner's Lunch', as it is on my TBR shelf.

And have just started the second Louise Penny book, A Fatal Grace: A Three Pines Mystery. I really enjoyed Still Life.

Jan, I read all Penny's books within about a month. I loved that whole series.

So many mysteries are light and fluffy or terribly dark and violent. This hit a happy medium. Very thoughtful. Interesting characters.
First thoughtful mystery series I have found since the early Barry Maitland.

I'm reading it right now, about half way through, I love it. :)

The snow troubles continue here in Washington so between shoveling stints I have had time to get in some reading. I finished Odd Thomas which was terrific, then I read a lovely book A Guide to the Birds of East Africa by Nicholas Drayson. If you like Alexander McCall Smith you will like this one.
Last night I started In the Bleak Midwinter by Julia Spencer-Fleming. It is the first in the Clare Fergusson series.

I really enjoy the [author:Julia Spencer-Fleming|33986] books. I've read all of them so far. I am anxiously awaiting the new one due, I think, in April.

I was finally disappointed by The Coroner's Lunch, it never lived up to it's promise as far as I am concerned. The author relied too much on supernatural happenings and happenstance to solve the crime IMO, thereby losing the oomph of the chase.
I'm more than halfway through Company of Liars by Karen Maitland, and I doubt it'll disappoint. Good characters, mysterious goings on, along with a fascinating piece of history.

Recently started The Sweetness at the Bottom of the Pie and I am really enjoying it. Interesting quirky characters and a good mystery too.
