Teresa (teresainohio) just finished The Scarecrowprobably a 4.25 rating, some things about the main character bothered me, but all in all a story that you just can read because the pages just turn themselves

Still reading Lady Killer
and next book for the car Long Lost

Hubby and I loved it. Thought it was thought-provoking (made us think what sort of things are out there).

I'm so jealous. I have to wait until the end of July before it's available here. Of course, my long reading list for this summer should keep me busy until then.

Katie Flora Wilkins (kflora) I just finished "Fool", it was bawdy and naughty, and laugh out loud funny.

While reading it, I joined this group. I'll admit I have so many books TBR, I can't keep up with the group reads all of the time. However, after joining this group I looked through the books I have (a note here, I read digitally on a Sony Reader), and now I'm reading The King of Lies by John Hart. So far, so good.

I love the crime/thriller genre, but it's been awhile since I've really delved into it. I did read Grisham's The Innocent Man Murder and Injustice in a Small Town recently , which was great!

I just read that a couple of months ago and really liked it. I liked the way he presented the facts and brought the story to life. And I thought it was scary that something like that could happen to people who are completely innocent!

Yep, it makes you think. I'm against the death penalty because of stories like this. However, I struggle with my beliefs when a child is the victim!

Yep, it's frustrating to read stories like that where innocent people spend years in jail based on the flimsiest of made-up evidence, but then there are other stories of people who are blatantly guilty yet are able to go free because of the smallest of technicalities in their cases. In a perfect world, the innocent would never get punished, but the guilty always would. Or I guess if I'm imagining a perfect world, I should imagine a world where there are never any guilty people because no crimes are ever committed!

message 60: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) The Scarecrow I gave it a 3.75 after thinking more things bother me but it is a great read, if that makes any sense?

also Lady KillerI will finish today, the pet peeve with this book EVERY chapter has a cliffhanger sentence, first it was enticing me to keep reading ( which I guess is the point) but now it bothers me

also grabbed The Sea of Monsters which was in the car and I was at baseball with no book :shudder:

message 61: by Dorie (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 464 comments Teresa, I finished The Scarecrow as well. The main thing that bothered me is that I think it would have been a better story had not the reader been introduced to the Scarecrow and known his identity all along. I'd rather try to figure it out myself and be surprised. But I still liked it a lot and my rating would hover between 4 and 4.5.

I'm now starting The Pig Did It, an Irish mystery that supposed to have some humor in it. It was an impulse buy so I hope it's good.

message 62: by Kandice (new)

I don't mind knowing ahead of time the identity of the killer, it is fun to know the secret and watch the other characters zone in on him/her/ I also like getting inside the mind of the killer too. I posted a review on my bookshelf about it

message 66: by Catamorandi (new)

Catamorandi (wwwgoodreadscomprofilerandi) I am currently reading A Curse Dark as Gold by Elizabeth Bunce. She is a brand new author. What I have read so far is very good.

message 67: by Helen (new)

Helen (hlm91) At the moment I'm rereading Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows (wanted to make sure that I have the events of the series straight in my head before the Half Blood Prince movie is released), and Agatha Christie An English Mystery, because I picked it up quite cheaply at a bookstore recently.

message 68: by Teresa (new)

Teresa (teresainohio) The Sea of Monsters liked it better than the first one, probably a 4

now reading 3rd Degreethis came out before the current state of the economy, but even though fiction, it could happen in real life

Borderline follow up to winter study, after the events of this book, it is heart wrenching watching um, reading what Anna is going though

I just finished Posed for Murder. It was a quick light read. It did have a bit of "chick lit" feel to it, which is not my favorite, but I did like several of the characters and I did enjoy the book.

message 70: by Lobstergirl (new)

Lobstergirl I recently finished The Lighthouse by P.D. James, which I enjoyed. I'm in the middle of The Magic Mountain (and will be for months). I just started Black Dogs by Ian McEwan.

Personally I think it is wrong, it just pushes up the rating which is not right. I mean if you are going to do it, at least don't be so blatant about it. I wont read this book, just because of that.

Kathy (readr4ever) | 236 comments Well, as so often happens with best laid plans, my reading list for the summer has been interrupted by a book not on the list (although on my shelf for some time), the non-fiction book The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson. I had just finished the YA mystery, The Calder Game by Blue Balliett, which was great, when in talking to my sister-in-law, she mentioned that she was reading The Devil in the White City and it was great. So, I slipped it into my reading list and began it. I will enjoy discussing it with her.

The Devil in the White City's a really good book, the things that Holmes did were were terrible. With the backdrop of the Worlds Fair, it's easy to see how so many women went missing and weren't really noticed. It's a very interesting book.

Kellie (acountkel) | 33 comments I just finished Out Stealing Horses which was an odd book, I have to say. Not excited about it.
Now I'm reading Portuguese Irregular Verbs by McCall Smith. He writes the #1 Ladies Detective Agency which I've read quite a few of.
I think I'm going to slide in The Pelican Brief after that. I own it and I'm always looking for a good excuse to read Grisham.

I really liked Sleepyhead, it was something a bit different. But Scaredy Cat was even better (that was a bad guy that stuck in my head).

So, don't give up on Mark Billingham!!!!

message 92: by Dorie (last edited Jun 18, 2009 05:20PM) (new)

Dorie (dorieann) | 464 comments I agree, Charlotte. Billingham's series gets better and better the more you read it. The only one I wasn't thrilled with was Burning Girl -- I thought it was good, just not great. Loved all the others.

I finished "The Pig Did It", which was good but not great. I've started a YA novel titled "Hero" by Perry Moore, about a gay teenage superhero. I needed something different, and it is a quick and easy read. So far I'm enjoying it.

No, I didn't know that, thanks. Is it a Tom Thorne novel or a standalone? Unfortunately it takes about a year for his books to be released here in the U.S. Did you know "Death Message" still hasn't been released here yet? I ordered it from AmazonUK along with a Jack Kerley book that was released only in the UK. I think I'll have to order Bloodline as well. I have no patience when it comes to my favorite authors.

Book 8 on the Tom Thorne series hon. No I never knew that it takes a year to arrive in the US xx

message 98: by [deleted user] (new)

Finished Sayers' letter collection, finally. Tough going and I wanted to read the other letters, not just hers, but fascinating. I will probably read the 2nd volume in the future.

I had another rush of bookrings, so I had to park Shadow of the Wind... I'm reading The Audacity of Hope Thoughts on Reclaiming the American Dream, which I'm loving. I'm having a great lesson in American History while reading this book!

Re-reading The Beekeeper's Apprentice, which I have read about 4 times, just to keep things interesting. (I always switch back and forth between a non-fiction and a fiction.)

Gail | 15 comments Just starting "The Serpent's Tale" by Ariadne Franklin. It's second in the series of "Mistress of the Art of Death" and it has been described as Patricia Cornwell in medieval times. Read "Mistress of the art of Death" first! I love Cornwell and I really enjoyed the first book of Franklin's.

Gail, the Adelia Aguilar series that you are reading is one of my favorites. The third one is Grave Goods and is another excellent book by Ariana Franklin.
