THEME FOR NOVEMBER: COURAGEOUS CHARACTERS

Several members have expressed interest in a Book of the Month feature for our group. Here's how it works:

We'll provide a suggested theme and give members the opportunity to nominate their favorite books. Then everyone can vote on the nominated titles to determine which book we'll read and discuss that month.

**Please nominate books with a copyright of 2011 or earlier, and widely available in libraries -- we don't want anyone to have to buy a book to participate.

Cordelia Dinsmore (cordeliadinsmore) | 105 comments I think The Redheaded Princess, by Ann Rinaldi, tells a story of a very courageous character - Queen Elizabeth I as a young girl.

Lorraine Carey (lorrainecarey) | 37 comments How does one get on the team for suggestions?

Any member can suggest a book! Great to have you join the group -- I saw on the Intro thread that you're a reading specialist. Your input will be valuable : )

We're just asking that nominated books be out since 2011 and widely available in libraries -- we want everyone to be able to participate without having to buy a book.

All the members will have a chance to vote on the nominations at the end of the month.

Jacci (jaccit) | 59 comments Hate to toot my own horn but Riley and Mia are very courageous characters! http://bendingwillow.jacciturner.com/

Riley knew Grandma was dead because she was smiling, Grandma never smiled when she was alive...

When Riley discovers her grandmother dead one morning, she knows her world is about to collapse. She’s been here before. After her mom and stepdad died in a car accident, she and her little sister Mia had been sent to live in a shelter until Grandma finally took them in. They were not going back to that shelter. Not this time.

Determined to find the father she knows only by an address on an envelope marked “Return to Sender,” Riley and Mia take off on an adventurous journey with so many twists and turns Riley begins to doubt they’ll ever find a real home. She ignores the question that keeps popping into her mind–if they do somehow find her father, will he even want them? Or will he send them back to the shelter?

Bending Willow is representing Nevada this year at the National Book-festival in Washington D.C.

H.Y. Hanna (hyhanna) Oh - I nominate Gregor the Overlander by Suzanne Collins - I just LOVE the whole series and it's a wonderful example of a reluctant hero who finds the courage in himself to do amazing things.

I especially like the way that the MC (11yr old Gregor) isn't some super-hero - and one of the biggest things is that he has a terrible fear of heights - which is something that he really needs to overcome in order to complete the quest/save his baby sister/etc, in the Underland...because everybody there rides on giant bats!!

I think the Gregor series is the most wonderful example of Middle-Grade fiction, focusing on friendship and loyalty and family and learning who you are & your place in things, challenging prejudices, admitting mistakes...all those things that you're learnign at that age....plus a rip-roaring adventure quest at the same time and the most GORGEOUS little sister. (and seriously, as life-long cockroach hater - any book that can get me actually crying over a cockroach is something else). I don't why know all the fuss goes to the Hunger Games coz I personally feel that this series is far superior.

Anyway, as you can see, I LOVE it!!! :-)

Harini Gopalswami Srinivasan (harinigs) Hello everyone! I'm new to this group and am having fun browsing through the discussions. I'd like to recommend "Duffy Barkley is Not a Dog" as Book of the Month. It's by Dixie Goode, a Goodreads author, and the hero, Duffy is one of the most courageous and interesting characters I have read about. Read my review here: https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

Vonna Carter | 4 comments Oh, I nominate Michelle Paver's series, The Chronicles of Ancient Darkness, starting with the first book WOLF BROTHER href="http://www.michellepaver.com/wolf-brother". Orphaned 12 year old Torak is a great protagonist, but Wolf, oh Wolf! I believe he is my favorite character of all time. Pure heart, courage and integrity. As the series title says, these two wonderful characters, along with equally strong girl character Renn, battle a great evil in a dark and ancient world.

Harini Gopalswami Srinivasan (harinigs) Also Tamora Pierce's Lioness series.

Mine too!

message 14: by Cordelia (new)

Cordelia Dinsmore (cordeliadinsmore) | 105 comments It wasn't on mine, but I think I need to put it there. I'd heard it mentioned quite a bit, but didn't realize it sounded like such a good read.

message 15: by Harini (new)

Harini Gopalswami Srinivasan (harinigs) Adding Gregor to my want-to-read list too!

message 16: by Vonna (new)

Vonna Carter | 4 comments It's probably because I'm a middle grade sort of person, but I loved the Gregor series far more than Collins's Hunger Games series. I read all three Hunger Games books once; I've read all five books of the Underland Chronicles three times. (But I still love Chronicles of Ancient Darkness more!)

message 17: by Steven (new)

Steven Whibley (stevewhibley) | 4 comments The Overlander series is awesome, but I did enjoy the Hunger Games more. It is a bit hard to compare the two though, just b/c they're geared for different audiences.

I'd love to nominate Kenneth Oppel's SKY BREAKER series.

Matt Cruise is a brave character who takes all kinds of risks in the name of helping others.

message 18: by Laurie (new)

Laurie Melrose | 2 comments I nominate Esperanza Rising by Pam Munoz Ryan. I was enthralled with this book. I don't know if it was the setting (California), the historical link (Mexican farm workers), or the strong, brave protagonist (Esperanza) that hooked me. Whatever it was, I hope that you enjoy it as much as I.

Laurisa Reyes (lwreyes) | 18 comments I nominate both Jem from The Other Side of Free (Peachtree Publishing) and Marcus from The Last Enchanter (Tanglewood Press), both new books out this month.

Hi Laurisa, those both sound like interesting books, but we are asking that nominations have a copyright of 2011 or earlier, so that members might be able to find them in their libraries. We don't want anyone to have to buy a book to participate. Do you have another suggestion?

message 21: by M.G. (new)

M.G. King (mgking) | 727 comments Last day to nominate books, so I'm bumping the thread! Voting will begin tomorrow : )

Theme: Courageous Characters
Guidelines: Copyright prior to 2011 and widely available in libraries so everyone can participate without having to buy a book. Thanks!
