November13: Choose a Book You Want to Read & Discuss
date
newest »

Any member can suggest a book! Great to have you join the group -- I saw on the Intro thread that you're a reading specialist. Your input will be valuable : )
We're just asking that nominated books be out since 2011 and widely available in libraries -- we want everyone to be able to participate without having to buy a book.
All the members will have a chance to vote on the nominations at the end of the month.

Riley knew Grandma was dead because she was smiling, Grandma never smiled when she was alive...
When Riley discovers her grandmother dead one morning, she knows her world is about to collapse. She’s been here before. After her mom and stepdad died in a car accident, she and her little sister Mia had been sent to live in a shelter until Grandma finally took them in. They were not going back to that shelter. Not this time.
Determined to find the father she knows only by an address on an envelope marked “Return to Sender,” Riley and Mia take off on an adventurous journey with so many twists and turns Riley begins to doubt they’ll ever find a real home. She ignores the question that keeps popping into her mind–if they do somehow find her father, will he even want them? Or will he send them back to the shelter?
Bending Willow is representing Nevada this year at the National Book-festival in Washington D.C.

I especially like the way that the MC (11yr old Gregor) isn't some super-hero - and one of the biggest things is that he has a terrible fear of heights - which is something that he really needs to overcome in order to complete the quest/save his baby sister/etc, in the Underland...because everybody there rides on giant bats!!
I think the Gregor series is the most wonderful example of Middle-Grade fiction, focusing on friendship and loyalty and family and learning who you are & your place in things, challenging prejudices, admitting mistakes...all those things that you're learnign at that age....plus a rip-roaring adventure quest at the same time and the most GORGEOUS little sister. (and seriously, as life-long cockroach hater - any book that can get me actually crying over a cockroach is something else). I don't why know all the fuss goes to the Hunger Games coz I personally feel that this series is far superior.
Anyway, as you can see, I LOVE it!!! :-)

I'd love to nominate Kenneth Oppel's SKY BREAKER series.
Matt Cruise is a brave character who takes all kinds of risks in the name of helping others.

Hi Laurisa, those both sound like interesting books, but we are asking that nominations have a copyright of 2011 or earlier, so that members might be able to find them in their libraries. We don't want anyone to have to buy a book to participate. Do you have another suggestion?

Theme: Courageous Characters
Guidelines: Copyright prior to 2011 and widely available in libraries so everyone can participate without having to buy a book. Thanks!

THEME FOR NOVEMBER: COURAGEOUS CHARACTERS
Several members have expressed interest in a Book of the Month feature for our group. Here's how it works:
We'll provide a suggested theme and give members the opportunity to nominate their favorite books. Then everyone can vote on the nominated titles to determine which book we'll read and discuss that month.
**Please nominate books with a copyright of 2011 or earlier, and widely available in libraries -- we don't want anyone to have to buy a book to participate.
