Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 629 comments Finished Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis. I thought it was pretty funny, but humor is pretty hard to recommend. Very subjective.

Jess Penhallow | 36 comments I've just finished Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit and I loved it! So much humour for such a sad topic. This is my first book of Jeanette Winterson's and I love the way she writes

Benjamin | 131 comments Just finished André Gide's Fruits of the Earth. Beautifully written, but definitely not as good as the other material I've read by him. This one was at times fascinating, but overall very tedious. I felt it lacked the insight/wit it so desperately wanted to have.

Aileen wrote: "Finished Thomas Of Reading by Thomas Deloney. Interesting but (to me) difficult read because of the old English."

I read this recently because it got assigned to me in a "Randomized Reading List" from a group. It's the oldest piece I've ever read by a hundred years. I'm surprised to see someone else (besides Diane) read it. As you say, it was interesting but a little challenging to read, though short.

Peter | 443 comments Nights at the Circus by Angela Carter. Two thirds let down by the remainder IMHO.

Tim | 331 comments Wise Blood by Flannery O'Conner. I found it disappointing. I gave it one star.

message 4709: by Birthe (new)

Birthe Vikøren | 46 comments Frankenstein. Such a great read, but way far from what I have seen in movies! Reminded me of The Hunchback of Notre-Dame and Disney. Very sad, actually.

George, it was thanks to you posting the link to the UofMich copy that spurred me on to read it. I've read earlier works on the list - Ovid, Apulieus, Chariton etc albeit modern translations, but Thomas came close to my read of Rabelais' Gargantua and Pantagruel, a real challenge and over 800 pages!

Her novels can be very depressing. The short story collections are better.

Finished A Town Like Alice, and enjoyed it. That's Nevil Shute's only book in the list but I may read another of his. I read his On the Beach decades ago.
Tomorrow's a holiday here in Utah- Pioneer Day, so more time to read.

I thought it was better than that but not really "List-worthy"".

A Town Like Alice is one of my favorite books. There was an excellent miniseries done in 1981 with Helen Morse and Bryan Brown.

I probably was a bit harsh with my rating. Certainly, it was not a "list-worthy" read.

Benjamin | 131 comments I just finished Golding's Lord of the Flies. I think I made the mistake of setting my expectations a little too high, and thus was disappointed.

Kokoro by Natsume Soseki of Japan. This is my 3rd Japanese list author. They all have rather a dry, unemotional writing style; not surprising that Japanese authors aren't popular in the U.S. (with the possible exception of Murakami).

I read it years ago and really enjoyed it and have read more Naipaul - a fav author now.

Benjamin | 131 comments The Moon and Sixpence by Somerset Maugham. It actually is not on the list, but it most definitely should be. One of my favorite reads this year.

message 4738: by Peter (new)

Peter | 443 comments Journey to the Centre of the Earth by Jules Verne. I was a little disappointed with it if I'm honest.

Sarah (sarahbethie) | 438 comments George wrote: “You didn't like it as well as Collins' The Woman in White?"

No, the storyline was not as good as The Woman in White. And I read it on the heels of Rebecca which was a hard one to follow.
