Well done! I took it over seven months and I felt such a sense of achievement when I finished!

Well done. It's on my bucket list for after (semi) retirement.

Bob Kaufman (bobkaufman) | 689 comments The Hunchback of Notre-Dame by Victor Hugo. Started slow with all Hugo's description of Paris, the place names, and the people of import, many of whom played no part in the story. But it improved greatly with intrigue, betrayal and death, hope, love, and romance.

Bryan--The Bee’s Knees (theindefatigablebertmcguinn) | 629 comments Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit by Jeanette Winterson. A sometimes humorous, sometimes melancholy coming of age/coming out story of a young woman in 1960s England. I thought it was very well done.

What did you think? I was left scratching my head over what was 'must-read-before-you-die' about it.

Yeah. Me too. I seem to feel that way about all of Auster's work. I like them mostly, but I never feel they are list worthy.

I've also now finished In the Heart of the Country. I didn't really like it as much as the other 2 books of his I've read, though there is certainly some very good writing there.

message 4498: by Benjamin (new)

Benjamin | 131 comments I read The Breast by Philip Roth in about 45 minutes yesterday. I found an original hardcover at a local bookstore, and decided to pick it up on behalf of my curiosity, and it being on the list. While I can't say I loved it, it was, to an extent, enjoyable and Roth presented some interesting ideas, but in the end I feel it fell kind of flat.
