You know, it's okay but there is just something about Coelho's writing that drags for me. Wonderful theme and ideas.

I just finished Rituals by Cees Nooteboom, my 50th book from the list and a book from the Netherlands, where I'm from. I am trying to read a few short ones to complete all my challenges before the end of the year and still have time to read the books I want to read but aren't from the list ;)

I have recently finished Decline and Fall by Evelyn Waugh and Black Dogs by Ian McEwan.

Both 3 stars. The first is clearly funny, but takes place among 20th century upper class English--a world I am definitely not familiar with. It is very much a picaresque story, so it's a bit much.

The second is not so much a story as a study. Interesting, but not my favorite McEwan.

I had to give up on The Man With the Golden Arm by Nelson Algren, the first list book I've given up on. I just didn't understand much of the slang and was losing the storyline. Did anyone else feel the same way about it?

Finished Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. A book with no real plot but still rather enjoyable in it's own way.

The Military Philosophers - definitely my least favourite in the series so far. Too many new characters and too much war related information. Rather boring.

The Devil and Miss Prim by Paulo Coelho. Good book, interesting thoughts although I don't agree at all points.

The Sun Also Rises: The book has a really slow start. If it had been a 500 pages book, I would have abandoned it. The first 2/3 of the book was a 2-star read for me, but then finally things started happening. The scene at the end of chapter 16 is worth the whole book. Tension.

Though the book is short, it is not an easy read. You have to pay attention. Even after finishing it I a not really sure what it was about. But I do not seem to be the only one judging from reviews.

Finished the Shining, read it for Halloween. I try to read gothic or horror in October. The book went by rapidly, found myself glad my house has had no death in it. Don't really like this type of book.

Wow it's fascinating how one book can be hated by one and loved by another! I didn't hate it myself exactly, but not my favorite either to say the least.

The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - A re-read but it's been a few years. An absolute classic for those whose humour is orientated that way. Mine absolutely is.

Never Let Me Go - A very quick read. It holds quite the emotional punch but I really didn't start feeling it until near the end due to the clinical and matter of fact style of writing.
