Me too! Very cozy read, made me think of childhood and home ^^

I started it today, was it good?"

You know, it's okay but there is just something about Coelho's writing that drags for me. Wonderful theme and ideas.

Mia | 1196 comments I just finished Persuasion by Jane Austen. Didn't like this one as much as Northanger Abbey but it was ok.

You should! It was my first book from Austen and I really enjoyed it.

This was the only book by Austen I didn't really like. Haven't read Northanger Abbey yet, but I will :)

Robin | 20 comments I just finished Love in the Time of Cholera and I absolutely loved it. It was my first book by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, but I can't wait to read more of his work.

I think my favorite Austen (until now) is Emma

message 2260: by Winter (new)

Winter (winter9) | 204 comments Read Persuasion earlier this year. Can't say it was my favorite.

Finished Bleak House today. It took a bunch of patience to read, but the effort was well spent!

message 2261: by Peter (new)

Peter | 443 comments Finished The Tin Drum. One of the strangest books that I've read in a while.

message 2262: by Linda (new)

Linda | 275 comments Just finished The English Patient by Michael Ondaatje. What calm and poetic writing. I gave it 4 stars.

message 2263: by Carol (new)

Carol | 104 comments Orlando by Woolf. Love her use of language.

message 2264: by Robin (new)

Robin | 20 comments I just finished Rituals by Cees Nooteboom, my 50th book from the list and a book from the Netherlands, where I'm from. I am trying to read a few short ones to complete all my challenges before the end of the year and still have time to read the books I want to read but aren't from the list ;)

message 2265: by Dree (new)

Dree | 160 comments I have recently finished Decline and Fall by Evelyn Waugh and Black Dogs by Ian McEwan.

Both 3 stars. The first is clearly funny, but takes place among 20th century upper class English--a world I am definitely not familiar with. It is very much a picaresque story, so it's a bit much.

The second is not so much a story as a study. Interesting, but not my favorite McEwan.

message 2266: by Peter (new)

Peter | 443 comments Finished Of Mice and Men. Loved it a true classic.

message 2267: by Tyler (new)

Tyler | 207 comments I finished listening to Lolita read by Jeremy Irons a few days ago. He is a great narrator and now I want to read the text.

message 2268: by Mia (new)

Mia | 1196 comments I just finished Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol.

message 2269: by Winter (new)

Winter (winter9) | 204 comments Mia wrote: "I just finished Dead Souls by Nikolai Gogol."

Liked it? I have read it some years ago, but I want to read it again some day, don't remember much.

I did, more than I thought. Even the story wasn't that interesting, it was beautifully written.

message 2271: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) I've just finished reading Around the World in Eighty Days. It was good, though not as good as I expected.

message 2272: by Carol (new)

Carol | 104 comments Finished The Bell Jar today. This may sound strange given the content but I found it to be a funny fast read.

Winter (winter9) | 204 comments Marina wrote: "I've just finished reading Around the World in Eighty Days. It was good, though not as good as I expected."

I felt the same way.

message 2274: by Rowizyx (new)

Rowizyx | 38 comments Surfacing by Margaret Atwood. It's probably not my favourite of her's, but I liked it

message 2275: by Aileen (new)

Aileen | 154 comments I had to give up on The Man With the Golden Arm by Nelson Algren, the first list book I've given up on. I just didn't understand much of the slang and was losing the storyline. Did anyone else feel the same way about it?

message 2276: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments The Devil And Miss Prym - I thought I'd get a head start on the next group read and I'd finished it in a couple of hours.

So, a quick and enjoyable read :-)

3 1/2 stars

Joy The Count of Monte Cristo
Finally finished this tome! For a Classic it is a fairly easy and "fun" read.

message 2278: by Kirsten (last edited Oct 13, 2015 07:59PM) (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Well after nearly a year of reading it off-and-on, I finally finished Middlemarch Middlemarch by George Eliot by George Eliot

Good effort!

message 2280: by Peter (new)

Peter | 443 comments Finished Cannery Row by John Steinbeck. A book with no real plot but still rather enjoyable in it's own way.

message 2281: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments The Military Philosophers - definitely my least favourite in the series so far. Too many new characters and too much war related information. Rather boring.

2 stars

message 2282: by Winter (new)

Winter (winter9) | 204 comments The Devil and Miss Prim by Paulo Coelho. Good book, interesting thoughts although I don't agree at all points.

message 2283: by J_BlueFlower (new)

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 387 comments The Sun Also Rises: The book has a really slow start. If it had been a 500 pages book, I would have abandoned it. The first 2/3 of the book was a 2-star read for me, but then finally things started happening. The scene at the end of chapter 16 is worth the whole book. Tension.

Though the book is short, it is not an easy read. You have to pay attention. Even after finishing it I a not really sure what it was about. But I do not seem to be the only one judging from reviews.

message 2284: by Carol (new)

Carol | 104 comments Finished the Shining, read it for Halloween. I try to read gothic or horror in October. The book went by rapidly, found myself glad my house has had no death in it. Don't really like this type of book.

Nice description! :) I finished that one at the beginning of this year and I loved it. Definitely on my favorites list.

Wow it's fascinating how one book can be hated by one and loved by another! I didn't hate it myself exactly, but not my favorite either to say the least.

message 2291: by J_BlueFlower (new)

J_BlueFlower (j_from_denmark) | 387 comments Winter wrote: "Janet wrote: "Just finished The Iron Heel - ..."

For me it was one of those book that was not a joy to read, but afterwards I was happy that I did, and I had a lot to think about.

^^ Books are that way sometimes :)

message 2293: by Robin (new)

Robin | 20 comments I just finished The Shining by Stephen King for the Halloween read from one of my groups. Until I finished it, I didn't realize it is in the list as well. I liked it a lot, it had some scary moments.

message 2294: by Zonnah (new)

I love reading books and afterwards realising they are on the 1001 list. It's like getting a 'free' book :-)

message 2296: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy - A re-read but it's been a few years. An absolute classic for those whose humour is orientated that way. Mine absolutely is.

5 stars

message 2297: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments Never Let Me Go - A very quick read. It holds quite the emotional punch but I really didn't start feeling it until near the end due to the clinical and matter of fact style of writing.

4 stars

message 2298: by Marina (new)

Marina (sonnenbarke) Yesterday I finished The English Patient, after a long struggle. I didn't like it. The writing style was good but the novel itself wasn't my cup of tea - too boring for my taste.

message 2299: by Carol (new)

Carol | 104 comments finished another Halloween read In a Glass Darkly, really enjoyed it.

message 2300: by Nicola (new)

Nicola | 770 comments Hunger - Ouch. Light reading (listening) this was not...

I can't say I enjoyed it exactly but it was very well written.
