Jamie Barringer (Ravenmount) (ravenmount) | 48 comments So far all 5 of the books I've finished this year are List books (library books that were due & not renewable, mostly)
The Summer Book - good, could be a good book to read to kids
Black Dogs - not my favorite from this author, but not terrible
The House of Mirth - surprisingly engaging
The Virgin in the Garden - pretty good, funny
Nightwood - confusing and pretty awful

The Year of the Death of Ricardo Reis by José Saramago. My 2nd Saramago, after Blindness. A mix of weirdness and a conventional story. Liked it- 4 stars

I gave this a scant 2 stars. As I read this, I kept thinking about A Clockwork Orange -- how good it is and how CSS feels like (to me) a poor imitation. I'm glad this one is behind me.

A short little book that I was able to finish in one day

MaryAnn (EmilyD1037) I started and finished The Optimist's Daughter on Sunday. I loved it. One of the few on Boxall's list.

The Posthumous Memoirs of Brás Cubas.

It was quite fun. Quite funny. And quite an interesting style.

Alamut by Vladimir Bartol who was essentially Slovenian, though where he was born is now in Italy. An interesting old novel (1938), though not one of my favorites. This was my 400th Boxall list book.
