R12: Team #5 ~ Ravishing Tarts

Read: 21/10/15
Rated: 4 Stars
My Review: Dark Heart of Magic is the second book in the Black Blade series and it is very true to Ms Estep's writing voice.
When Lila is chosen to participate in a Tournament of Blades she finds herself up against other Magicks utilising her skills, however the friendly competition soon turns deadly at the hands of a saboteur.
There are three types of people in this world, Mortals, Magicks and Monsters, the latter two being the focus of the story. I love the mythology in this series, the politic between the Mafia style families is heating up as their secrets start to unravel. We discover more about Lila's Mum and she has important decisions to make, we get a little taste of what the future might hold. A thoroughly enjoyable book, you can definitely see similarities between this series and all of Ms Estep's other series, if you are a fan of them you will enjoy this tale and vice versa.

I've said it before I'm in awe of Seanan McGuire's imagination. Between this series, Toby Daye and what she writes as Mira Grant to come with with so many different worlds, beings within those worlds and scientific possibilities, there's so much there. I do think that this is the "lighter" in nature series. (view spoiler)
In this book we travel with Alex and his girlfriend Shelby to her native Australia so we get to meet new species of cryptids. I admit that I wanted to shake some sense into Shelby's family through most of the book, but it's natural that we'd be on Alex's side since his family has been the focus. The mystery surrounding the werewolves is good and the clues are scattered throughout. And as we learn who's behind the attacks Alex learns more about the species than was documented before. That's fitting with Alex as a scientist. I've enjoyed both of his books but I'm also looking forward to Verity's point of view again in the next one.["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>["br"]>

That death just about killed me too. So unnecessary and sad. :/

I'm interested to see how you like this one. I remember reading a review a while ago and was interested at the time but I must have forgotten about it. Science Fiction with romance are so few & far between, I'm always on the lookout for a good one.
Re: Pocket Apocalypse - I know! I'm glad I was reading it at home instead of lunchtime at work when that happened because I was crying like a baby.

Book: A Witch's Handbook of Kisses and Curses by Molly Harper
Shelf: Coupledom
Date Finished: 10/24/15
Rating: 4 stars
I wasn't sure about the romance in this one at first. I can't saying without spoilers but it worked out OK for me. Nothing wrong with either character, I liked both Nola & Jed but there were, um, circumstances that I wasn't happy with while a romance developed. It was better explained towards the end so that redeemed it for me.
Enough with the vagueness, the other things I liked about this book was just the visit to Half Moon Hollow and spending time with Jane Jameson and her slightly demented (both the supernaturals and the humans) family. Jane's still my favorite character, I love her mix of smarts, sarcasm and goofiness. So all the time spent at her shop was great. I always enjoy visiting this world and this book was no exception. It was fun to see it through Nola's eyes as an outsider it gave her a different perspective than we've seen before. I shouldn't have worried in the beginning, as usual this turned out to be a fun, enjoyable read.

Real life and other virtual things have been in my way. My excuses include:
watching my horror movies (100 this month), teaching my twin 16 year olds to drive, several doctors appointments (feeling like a pincushion), trying to enjoy the remaining pretty weather riding on the back of a motorcycle before it gets too cold to want to do that for a few months, the release of Assassin's Creed: Syndicate and reading Ready Player One.
So to sum up... I'm lame and I'm sorry.

My Review: I really enjoy a good Dragon shifter story and this definitely falls into that category. It is slightly darker than most but not as dark a paranormal romance as I have came to expect from the author.
I am intrigued by the Bloodkin and the origins, can't wait to find out more. The series has a lot of potential.

Review:
The love I have for Molly Harper's characters is insane. I was happy to see most of our Half Moon Hollow characters return in this installment, even if just briefly. Dick and Jane were fun as always. :D
Libby Stratton has been dealt a bad hand in life. So, with a great deal of desperation, she posts an online ad offering to pay someone to turn her into a vampire.
I loved her and Wade together, I loved their kids and I'm hoping that we see more of them together in future installments. I really loved the spray bottle. I'm horribly amused by the meshed family that is being built and I'm even happy for her former mother-in-law, Marge.
The only complaint I have is that now I have to wait for the next release.

I'm not really feeling this category but I have them both right now so I'll give them a chance.
I'm just hoping they're better than the other books on the shelf that I've tried and failed to get through. Not to say that they're all bad. After all Jericho Barrens and Reyes Farrow are on that shelf too. :)

Review: Full disclosure: my boyfriend is a biker. I'm considered his old lady. :)
My issues with this are nit picky (and YMMV) 1. I only wear boots when I'm riding on the back, I would never wear heels. 2. I've never gone for a ride where I got on the back of the bike first; if for no other reason it's more difficult for the person in front to get on the bike. 3. Nix Knight? Really? That name just bugged me in the first few chapters. 4. I also thought the name of the book was strange for a MC book.
However, all that aside, I did enjoy this book. Most of it was realistic and while our Alpha, Nix, was kinda a caveman, Kadence, our h, called him on it. He was a good guy underneath the roughness. I would've hated his attitude towards Kadence if she didn't enjoy it and give as good as she got.
I was worried for while that there was going to be a loose end or two but, the author wrapped it up nicely with obvious clues for the next couple in the series. I read this book in one sitting.
I've read two books in a row that starred men on motorcycles with kids. Warms the subcockels of my heart. :)

Hopefully I'll get to them soon. In the meantime, enjoy your books!

For Alpha Male I had to do some digging but I found

My Review: You know when you are reading a book and you think you know where it's heading, only to have the author completely blind side you and change everything? Yeah, that right there is what happened to me when reading this book. I loved it and I will be reading the next one sooner, rather than later.

My Review: Edge of Danger is a great addition to the series, the action is really heating up following the death of their boss. Now the boys find someone has put a hit out on them and are trying o set them up to take the fall for their nefarious actions.
I love a good story when you are desperately trying to figure out who the hidden bad guys are and Katie did a brilliant job of keeping me guessing. I liked Karen as a character, she isn't as deadly as some of the women, or as helpless as others but she definitely had skills and I was firmly in her corner. I really liked her and Tucker together. Tucker made this book for me, I thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the real him. Can't wait for the next one!

For coupledom I am going to read :

I've been meaning to read this one forever and all the positive reviews did not lead me wrong. I enjoyed so much about this book. I sometimes have a hard time with overly naive characters but in this case I really loved Meg. She may not know too much about the world but she's determined to make her way. I always love it when authors use the animal characteristics when writing shifters and that was true here. I loved the wolves loving the dog beds, despite their dignity and the crows looking for shiny toys. I find that I'm loving books lately where the supernatural characters are a bit scary again and there's plenty of that here.
I loved Meg & Sam's relationship and how they help each other. And how Meg's presence changes the way The Others view their human employees. I even loved the cops and how they had to walk a line between human and Other interests. So this review is basically just a list of things I loved about this book. There are a million 5 star reviews that are more articulate. I loved this one and I'll be jumping into the next in the series quickly.

Review:
A fun story with the author's trademark sense of humor and characters with heaps of chemistry.
In this story, uptight good girl Emma comes up with a slightly ridiculous scheme to save her beloved school and lazy bad boy womanizer Kenny fits right in with her plans.
Kenny does not know how to handle Emma and he is completely unprepared for the upheaval he causes in his life, but although it takes him a while, by the end of the book he can't even imagine being without her, "please don't leave me" scene included.

(view spoiler)
I liked this book a lot more than the first one, but I enjoyed seeing glimpses of Francesca and Dallie's happily ever after. I hope there's a book with their son's story later in the series, but for now, Glitter Baby follows.
