I'm trying to recall a book whose name or author I can't remember. (I have details.) /s

I read this book 3 years ago when I was in the 9th grade.
I can't remember the name or author.

It was about a boy, he has a girlfriend who he sleeps with (before she has to move away or he realizes they can't be together something along those lines.)

He has an older brother who gets out of jail. the main character works at a grocery store. The main character's older brother likes to draw girls and is kind of creepy in a convict sort of way.

The older brother ends up killing someone (I think it was the boss of the main character) and the younger brother ends up shooting the older brother on a boat before letting him escape from the police with the book ending on a kind of glum note and a bit of an open ending not knowing if the older brother dies or not.

I am trying to remember the name of the book so that I can buy it for my girlfriend as a surprise Christmas gift. Any help is greatly appreciated.

Any idea what year it was published? If not, did it seem old or new when you read it - for example were there details about technology or certain slang words? Do you remember anything about the cover? Did you read it for school or on your own?

I read it on my own. I want to say it was published within the last 10-15 years. I can't remember anything about the cover sadly.

I also know that part of the novel takes place during the winter. Other facts that I can think off off the top of my head is that the main character is considered the good child to his parents where as his brother who gets out of jail at the beginning of the novel isn't.

Dark Angel? Some parts sound similar. Also, you may want to edit your post title with details about the book. You'll catch more eyes. Something like,"Boy's brother released from prison. Moves back in."
