Linda | 124 comments It’s only a week until October begins so I think it would be a time to decide our next book.

Books suggested previously:

The Princess Bride
Howl's Moving Castle
Artemis Fowl
Peter Pan
Eight Cousins

Does anyone have any new suggestions?
I’m in a favor of reading Howl’s Moving Castle, Peter Pan or Artemis Fowl. Artemis Fowl and Howl’s Moving Castle are on my to-read list and I have never read Peter Pan (I know, I’m horrible D: ) so I would gladly read it too.

Ooh, yes! :D Um... I don't have much input here. I have a list of books I want to try to read in October (no illusions about how many I'll get to)...

I wouldn't mind reading Howl again (Howl!) especially since it's shorter. But I really don't know! *flail* More suggestions, anyone?

And you're not horrible for not having read Peter Pan, Odile! *hugs* It is a very lovely book though. :)

message 3: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments As I have time off in october I actually feel like I might get to read whatever book we pick...

#
I have not read Peter Pan either and feel like I probably should read it and I want to read it.
But generally I don't mind reading any book on this list....

So yeah. :)

I wonder what Lauri thinks...?

I could reread Peter Pan... haven't read it in awhile and it is really good... I love the official sequel, too: Peter Pan in Scarlet. :)

message 5: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments I am fairly certain my grandma got me the sequel when I asked for the original... now that is lying around in my to read pile and I can't read it because I have not reread the original...

message 6: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments So, maybe we should read Peter Pan then? I think it would be a nice choice for next month. Would it be okay to everybody if we read it next?

message 7: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
Peter Pan is fine by me if that seems to be the general consensus. :)

message 8: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments Sorry, guys! I always seem to be late to the party.

This is great, Odile, how you put all the books together with the links and everything.

I would LOVE to read Peter Pan next! Trust me, I'll never say no to reading that book. Plus, it's been a good while since I read it last. So yes, that sounds simply fabulous to me! But the other suggestions are great too. (I mean, HOWL! :D) But, anyways, yes, Peter Pan would be fantastic. Plus, it's actually a really short book. It doesn't take much to get through it.

message 9: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments A really short book sounds like a great idea even though I should have more time in october.
I need to study for my A-Levels if I want to do nano in november...
And I need to finish my au pair application....

So yes. Short book is a good idea.

message 10: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments Thanks, Lauri. :)

So, it's Peter Pan, then! Do we read it chapter by chapter like we did with Sense and Sensibility?

message 11: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
Well... there's only 17 chapters I think... So even at a chapter a day we could probably do it in a couple weeks. I dunno. Any thoughts, anyone?

message 12: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments Öhm. As it is a short book I am not sure. We could say we set up a thread and if you have something to say to a chapter you post your thoughts and other than that we want to finish it by the end of october?

message 13: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments That sounds fine to me. :)

message 14: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments Yeah, that sounds good. We can just read it as we want I guess and aim to finish it by at least the end of the month? Works for me! And I haven't even started it yet. I've been so busy lately. Maybe I'll start it tonight...

message 15: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments Since we don't have many days of November left we should probably choose our next book. Any ideas what we should read during December? :)

message 16: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments I would vote for a christmassy book.
I can make suggestions later but I need to find my christmas books first....

message 17: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
Whew, just finished my NaNo so I can finally think about reading again! I only read one book in all of November. O_O So! Um... I have no idea what we should read... (Heehee, not a very good moderator of the group when I don't have ideas and haven't even finished Peter Pan yet... :P)

Christmas sounds nice... I can't think of any besides A Christmas Carol at the moment though. My brain is fried from too much writing... Any ideas, anyone?

message 18: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments Well we could read
Dash and Lillys book of Dares (which is super cute and great)
or charlie and the chocolate factory
or Cornelia funke: when santa fell to earth (which is my every year christmas read by a german author and I personally think every should read something by Cornelia Funke at least once)
or Behind enchanted windows (which is also by her and an all time favorite)
Those are on top of my christmas reading list.
I am still open for suggestion but... yes

message 19: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments A Christmas Carol… I haven’t read it before so it would be nice to read it. :)
Those books by Cornelia Funke sound nice and interesting but they haven’t been translated into Finnish and I don’t know is it possible for me to find the English translations here. Same goes with Dash and Lillys book of Dares.
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory… I have read it before so I’m not really into reading it now again. BUT if you all want to read it I’m not against choosing it. I probably won’t read it but I can participate in discussion about it. :)

message 20: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments Should we just read "A christmas Carol" then?
I think I would like to read it too.
I just listed other ideas but yes. we can do whatever you want.

Calling all Lauri's! Do you have any thoughts? ;)

Ahem.

I'm good with A Christmas Carol! It's a short read I think... I've already read it but planned to read it again soon anyway. :)

I've also read Charlie and the Chocolate Factory but it's been a long time, so I'm not averse to that either. I haven't heard of those others... (though I do have a couple books by Cornelia Funke that I'd like to read someday.)

Anyways, whatever people decide! :)

message 22: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments While I think nearly all of cornelia funke's writing is amazing I personally like her christmas stories best... (probably because it is not as weird to reread them about 13 to 15 times... ^^)

message 23: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments Good gravy! I'm so sorry, guys! NaNo totally took over my life and then I just kind of stepped away from the computer for a while. I've barely touched GoodReads in a month! Soooo sorry I haven't been around! D:

So. A Christmas Carol is perfectly fine! I've actually never read it before, so it would probably be a good thing for me to do.

Or we could read The Hobbit in honor of The Desolation of Smaug coming out this month. This FRIDAY actually!! :D :D :D I'm trying to do a quick read through of it before the movie comes out. But I'm good with anything. ^_^

message 24: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments Everybody seems to be fine with reading A Christmas Carol so I think we should read it then?

The Hobbit would be nice to read but I want to finish LotR first. I still haven't read The Return of the King.

I can't believe there is only a few days before The Desolation of Smaug!! I'm so excited!! :D

message 25: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments Alrighty, A Christmas Carol sounds great to me! This month is getting on, we should probably go ahead and start it. I think NaNo threw us all in a loop. ;)

message 26: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
Sounds good to me--I started a topic for it. :) Fortunately it's pretty short I think, so hopefully it's not to late to start. :P

(Sorry I was so absent AGAIN, y'all... my internet loves to die for a few days at really inopportune moments...)

@Lauri: Yes, NaNo does play with the brain, doesn't it. O_O
And as for re-reading the Hobbit, I applaud you for the effort but I'm personally avoiding doing that like the plague because I know it's going to be so horribly unlike the book that I don't want it to be fresh in my mind. Meep. It's going to be bad enough as it is without being reminded of how awesome the real book itself is. :x I'm sure the movie will be fun in its own right though; I'll try not to be too much of a book perfectionist and spoil everyone else's fun. XD

message 27: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments It's A Christmas Carol then! :) I already have the book so I can start reading now.

About the new Hobbit movie... I went to see it and I think it was awesome. BUT I haven't read the book so I can't say anything about that. I know Legolas and Tauriel are not in the book (Tauriel is not even Tolkien's character) so at least that part of the movie is not following the book.
Anyway, in my opinion, it was a great movie and I hope you like it too. :)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
@Odile: It's out already in Finland?? :O *is just the teeniest bit jelly* It doesn't come out in the U.S. until midnight tonight. XD I'm glad you thought it was awesome! :D

message 29: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments CELTI! :D

Yeah, A Christmas Carol seems to be really short, so this is a good one to start in the middle of the month. XD

You know what, you're very smart to stay away from rereading The Hobbit. I personally reread it so I can complain intelligently and profusely about every single detail they got wrong, and by detail I really mean the entire movie in general, because from what I've seen it looks NOTHING like the book. >.> Ugh. But I haven't seen it yet, so I shouldn't get upset. Anyways, I might honestly enjoy it more if everything wasn't so fresh on my mind. I didn't even think of that.. BUT I CAN'T BELIEVE IT'S OFFICIALLY OUT. I'm reeeeeeally hoping to see it this weekend. We're going to try but we're not entirely sure we can. Hopefully though!

ODILE. You already got to see it? Jealous! I'm glad you enjoyed it. You must read the book though. ;)

message 30: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments We should probably decide on what to read in January. (I don't have a suggestion and am still finishing A christmas Carol but I go to a bookstore on monday so I would love to have an idea on what to buy ^^)

Oh, The Book Thief is an awesome idea! I've been meaning to read that book for ages. I just need to get my hands on a copy...

Yeah Hi it's me :P Sure I do :D
I've also been wanting to read the book for ages, that's why I suggested it ^^

message 36: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments I guess book thief it is then?
I will probably join the discussion for that late (or not at all because yes)
I really like that choice but I have finals between the 13th and the 29th and I can read until the 13th because I that is my english final but I need to study for geography and mainly physics after that.
I am scared....

message 37: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments I created the topic for discussion of The Book Thief.

I hope your finals go well, Autschi! :)

message 38: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments Hey, Brownie! It's so good to see you here! :D

Don't worry, Autschi, I'm not sure when I'm going to get to read it either. I don't have a copy of it... So it might be late for me.
Good luck on your finals!

Sorry I've been so absent, guys! D: The new year sorta dumped a whole bunch of new responsibilities on me so I've hardly had time for internet. :-/

*waves at Brownie*

Good luck, Autschi!

Thanks for making a thread, Odile!

@Lauri: Same here...

message 40: by Tatjana (new)

Tatjana | 18 comments @Lauri: I'm excited to be here and start talking books :P

Good luck Autschi :D

message 41: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments Guys! I am done with finals and and and and ....
January is nearly over and I can read again and I have money to buy books and we need to decide on a book we want to read in february.
I don't really have any suggestions though because I am still stressed and sort of confused and therefore I would love you if you could suggest books to read and decide on a book to read so I can get it and read it? That would be super nice of you.
And that is all I have to say. Yes

message 42: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments I'm happy your finals are over! :)

Suggestions for February...
Persuasion by Jane Austen?
or
Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer?

message 43: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
@Autschi: Yay! :)

@Odile: I'm not averse to either of those suggestions. :) Both Persuasion and Artemis Fowl I would not mind reading soon--the latter I would have to get from the library first though.

Other ideas: I really want to read Peter Pan in Scarlet again in the next month or so... Since we did Peter Pan recently I thought that might be nice. But if it wasn't such a favorite, I can understand not wanting a sequel. ;)

message 44: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments I would not mind reading any of these books (I think I even have a german copy of Peter Pan in Scarlet at home) but I might have to share my copy of Artemis Fowl with my sister if I decide to reread because we want to read it

message 45: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
*blinks* Ummm... I think someone has to pick one. XD Of course, whichever we don't pick can be for another month...

I think my vote is for Persuasion by Jane Austen, but I'm totally up for anything else! Thoughts?

(Also maybe sometime we'll make an actual poll-thing... I forgot you could have those.)

message 46: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments Ack! And I never even got my hands on The Book Thief. Whoops. I WILL read it someday though. It's something I've been meaning to read for years... So I will!!

Um...February book. Well, I recently read Artemis Fowl, so I wouldn't read it again any time soon, but I could still totally discuss it with you all if you decide on that. So that would be perfectly fine.

As far as Persuasion, that's fine too except I don't have a copy of it and currently I don't have a tablet which is what I would use to read it on (I assume it can be accessed from Gutenberg or something like that?). My tablet keeps breaking. >.> Sooo I don't know if I'd be able to read it this month.

I also don't have a copy of Peter Pan in Scarlet but I really, really, really want to read that one. Ack! I need more money to buy books! So many I want!

So, um, I'm not being helpful, am I? Basically whatever you guys want. Not sure I'll be able to participate this month, but that's fine. I kind of have a huge pile of books I'm dying to get my hands on, so I might be busy with those this month anyway. *cough*

message 47: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
@Lauri: Yes, Persuasion is on Gutenberg. :) That's sad about your tablet though... :-/

Hmm... maybe we should try Artemis Fowl, then? That way Lauri can still participate since she's read it. I won't be able to start it right away, but I'm hoping to go to a library soon.

We could put down Persuasion and possibly Peter Pan in Scarlet for later months?

Is everyone okay with Artemis Fowl for Feburary?

message 48: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments Sounds good to me.... :)

message 49: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments Artemis Fowl sounds great! :)

Yes, we could read Persuasion and Peter Pan in Scarlet some other month. :)
