Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments That's perfect! That way I can still participate in the discussion without stressing about trying to get my hands on the book.

Oh, Autschi! Congrats on finals being over by the way! :D

With March approaching, any thoughts on whether we want to read Persuasion or Peter Pan in Scarlet next? Or something else? I figured out how to make a poll so I put that up... don't know if that's the best way to go in future or not... Anyways, thoughts?

Tatjana | 18 comments Hey guys, sorry I've been kinda MIA. That is mostly because I'm in a reading slump and I'm still trying to finish The Book Thief. I like what I read so far.
@celti: Thanks for creating a poll :D

message 54: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments A poll is a good idea! Thanks for creating it, Celti! :)

Unfortunately I probably have to skip next month. I'm going to be really busy and I don't want to have any more reasons to feel stressed. Also, I haven't finished Artemis Fowl yet. Sorry. :(

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
No problem, Odile! I understand completely--I'm behind on stuff myself. Don't stress over it. :) And don't worry about not finishing yet--this is supposed to be fun after all. :)

@Tatjana: It happens, no worries. And I haven't even started The Book Thief, so I'm more behind than you. ;)

message 56: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments I feel awful, because I keep having to skip months, but March is going to be another month I'm not 100% sure I'll be able to participate in. Mainly because I don't actually own Peter Pan in Scarlet or Persuasion. If I could get my hands on one of them it wouldn't be too big of a problem. But, also, this first week of March I'm going to be crazy busy and then I'll be gone for all of the second week (or at least that's the plan but you all know how plans are...), so I'm not sure when I can get them or find much reading time, sadly. But hopefully I can read them eventually (been wanting to read Peter Pan in Scarlet forEVER) so even if I don't read whatever we decide on this month I can still discuss them with you all eventually.

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
Well... If you two are going to be too busy, that's about half of the regular readers... We could just say we'll skip March and try again in April? If that's okay with everyone.

message 58: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments Well, actually, that is true. It sounds like most of us aren't going to be able to do it this month. We could take a break and regroup in April. I'm fine with that.

Also, hiiii, Celti! We're on at the same time! :D

message 59: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
Though... maybe we could decide which one we want to read for April...?

*grin grin* Hiii Lauri! Being on at the same time is awesome. ^_^ Reminds me of the old PE days... *nostalgic sigh*

message 60: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments I would actually be able to participate in march but we can also skip march and just do april and I will use march to minimize my TBR pile because that is huge and needs to disappear soon.

message 61: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
As long as skipping March is okay with you, Autschi.

I really have a ton of things in my TBR pile as well that I need to work through, so that's what I was thinking as well. :)

message 62: by Tatjana (new)

Tatjana | 18 comments I'm fine with skipping march too. I guess that should be enough time to get me out of my reading slump :)

message 63: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments (I need to finish the pile before I leave. All new books will be bought as ebooks so I can take them with me when I go abroad. It is fine and I forgot what I wanted to say

message 64: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments So, what should we read in April?
The poll Celti created was already closed so I created a new one.
https://www.goodreads.com/poll/show/1...
I hope that's okay. :)

message 65: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
Yes! Thanks for making that, Odile! :)

message 66: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments Does anyone have any desire to read The Mysterious Benedict Society? It's a book I've wanted to read for a long time and I finally found it for real cheap at a secondhand bookstore. I'll probably start it soon so just thought I'd throw it out there for a suggestion. It looks like a really fun book. ^_^

But anyways, if not, Persuasion is fine. I still haven't gotten my hands on Peter Pan in Scarlett. >.> Someday! I do have my tablet back though, so I can read ebooks again. Yay!

Or...something else? I'm really up for anything. I'm determined to join you guys this time. I keep skipping months. D: So shameful! I miss discussing books with you lovely people!

Persuasion is cool with me. :)

I actually have The Mysterious Benedict Society... I wouldn't be averse to trying that one sometime, too. :D

message 68: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments I actually think that The Mysterious Benedict Society sounds really awesome!
I might actually have a host family with middle grade kids soon though so I might wait a little longer and read it with them .... that could be fin too! We would get a whole other perspective. I would read along in april too though!

message 69: by Linda (last edited Mar 24, 2014 03:37PM) (new)

Linda | 124 comments The Mysterious Benedict Society sounds interesting but I'm not sure if it has been published in Finland. I googled it and I didn't find much Finnish results. It seems that it's not possible for me to get the book. :/

@Odile: Aww, that's too bad. :(

Well, I guess we'll read Persuasion for April, then? Everyone seems cool with it... :)

message 71: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments @Celti - Wasn't The Mysterious Benedict Society one of those books we were going to try to read together? That'd be awesome!

@Odile - Awww, sadness! I'm sorry. :(

Persuasion is perfectly fine with me for April! We could always shoot for The Mysterious Benedict Society for another month if we wanted to.

@Lauri: Yes, it was! :D I guess well do it sometime...

Persuasion it is, then! Wow, I feel so accomplished, actually knowing what we're going to read next month when there's still a week left to this month. :D

message 73: by Miriam (new)

Miriam (autschi) | 80 comments Yes! We are very good! For once we actually managed to decide on a book on time! I am proud of all of us. Now all I have to do is pass math and download persuasion and then I am ready....

message 81: by deborah (last edited Apr 23, 2014 08:25PM) (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
Um... I have no idea. O_O

I did a quick scan through this and the previous random thread, and I think these are all the books that have been mentioned/suggested that we haven't read together yet:

The Princess Bride
Howl's Moving Castle
Eight Cousins
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory
Peter Pan in Scarlet
The Mysterious Benedict Society
The Hobbit
The Lord of the Rings (I don't think this was serious...?)
and two I don't know about:
Dash and Lillys book of Dares
when santa fell to earth

I don't know if any of those are serious candidates anymore or were just mentioned or what. Some of them some people have already read or can't get hold of.

Everyone feel free to suggest things or whatever! I'll try to think of ideas...

message 82: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
So I took a quick glance through some of y'all's to-read lists for ideas, and made a note of a few that interest me, mostly of more classic types since that's pretty universal. (Also not counting stuff previously discussed. And Imma be lazy and not link everything if everyone probably knows what it is. XD)

The Penderwicks is on everybody's to-read list, but that's only because I recommended it to basically everyone I know on Goodreads... *cough*

AUTSCHI
Alice in Wonderland
The Amulet of Samarkand
Sherlock Holmes (various...)
More Hitchhiker's Guide stories?

Pride and Prejudice (I've read and want to read again. :P)

ODILE
North and South
I Capture the Castle
The Importance of Being Earnest
maybe one of the Moomin stories (https://www.goodreads.com/series/5069...) (I want to get my hands on a couple of these to try them out but haven't!)

Around the World in Eighty Days (Read a long time ago and want to read again)

ABI
Watership Down
maybe some Dickens? (I've only read A Christmas Carol)
Kipling?
I think I've heard vaguely good things of the Rangers Apprentice series...

I'm not listing all of Lauri's because there's like twenty or so things we both want to read so it would be a long list... We're kinda the same like that. :P So I dunno.

Things I'm probably going to end up reading in May anyway:
Leviathan
The Moorchild
Peter Pan in Scarlet (unless that's voted on for a later month, in which case I could probably wait on rereading it. ;))
The Court of Stone Children (reread)

Um. So there's a lot of me spewing ideas. o.o (Rambly Celti is rambly. It's obviously nearly midnight. *cough*)

So if any of those catch anybody's eye... And/or if people can obtain them... which is the worst thing about trying to figure this stuff out. XD

And obviously, feel free to suggest other things! I'm by no means the center of the universe, I just thought I'd get some ideas rolling. :P

(Oh, and the nice thing about really old things is you can find them free online, so there's no lack-of-finding problem there. :D)

message 84: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments Thanks Celti for listing potential books!

Next month I would like to read something rather short. I will have a very busy month so it would be nice if the book weren’t too long.

The Moomin books sound good! I’m planning to read more of them soon so one Moomin story would be a great choice for me.

Peter Pan in Scarlet would be good too since we’ve been meaning to read it for a while now.

Also, I’ve never read any Sherlock Holmes story so that seems a great choice too. Maybe The Hound of Baskervilles?

Anyway, those are my favorites of the books suggested. :)

message 85: by Christine (new)

Christine Smith (lauriloth) | 81 comments Very helpful list, Celti! It amuses me you're not listing mine since our to-read lists are basically the same list. XD

Personally I'd like to wait a few months before doing another Austen. I really do enjoy those books, but they're a bit heavy reads so reading one right after another overwhelms me because I'm lame like that. *cough*

A Sherlock Holmes would be perfectly fine with me. Always up for those and there are a bunch I haven't read yet.

Alice in Wonderland would be cool. It's not long and, you know, AWESOME. I loooove me some Alice and Wonderland. Been in the mood to read it again.

I'm dying to read The Mysterious Benedict Society very soon. Were we going to try that one some month or just decided against it completely? Did someone say they couldn't get a hold of it?

You know what? I'm ashamed to say I've never even heard of the Moomin stories. *blinks* Are these things I suppose to know about? Sometimes I think I live under a rock...

But there are my thoughts. I'm a little scattered today, so I hope that was coherent.

message 86: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments @Lauri: I'm pretty sure I won't be able to get The Mysterious Benedict Society. However, that doesn't mean you couldn't read it. I just skip the month then.

I don't know how well known the Moomins are outside of Finland. (But I do know that compared to other Finnish things they are one of the most known ones with Angry Birds and Nokia.)
Don't be ashamed! It's simply impossible to know everything. And look at the bright side: now you know about the Moomins! :D

message 87: by deborah (new)

deborah o'carroll (deborahocarroll) | 190 comments Mod
I only know about the Moomins because I'm reading a really awesome book about children's books (The Green and Burning Tree: On the Writing and Enjoyment of Children's Books) by an author I really like, and she mentions all these oodles of books I love and all these other oodles that I haven't heard of. And almost all of those are going on my to-read list. XD So she mentioned the Moomin stories and they just sounded cool so I want to at least try one or two sometime. I think they're kinda rare though; I dunno.

@Odile: I think it's really cool how they're Finnish so you read them in their original language, whereas I would have to read a translation--kind of like switching, where The Lord of the Rings for instance was written in English and you read it translated (I think I remember you saying that?). I just thought it's interesting. :D

message 88: by Linda (last edited Apr 28, 2014 03:26PM) (new)

Linda | 124 comments @Celti: Actually, the Moomin books weren't originally written in Finnish. Tove Jansson was a Swedish speaking Finn so she wrote in Swedish.
So, I'm also reading translations. XD It would be fun though if we read a book originally written in Finnish. It would be interesting to compare the translation to the original. :)

The good thing about Sherlock Holmes or North and South is everyone should be able to get hold of them. :) I'm going to vote for something like that, or for Peter Pan in Scarlet (except I don't know if Lauri can find it) or The Mysterious Benedict Society (except that Odile can't find it.)

But whatever everyone decides. ;)

message 92: by Linda (new)

Linda | 124 comments I really want to read North and South but I don't think I can do it this month. It's pretty long and I'm going to be very busy during the month.

I'm in favor of Sherlock Holmes or Peter Pan in Scarlet. :)

Um... The Sign of Four, then? I've read Baskervilles before and while I do need to read it again someday, I don't remember having read The Sign of Four, so it would be new for me too. :) And it's next on my list for Holmes reading...

Let me know what y'all think!

Autschi? Lauri? Any thoughts? :)
