Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) I just randomly bought a bunch of Sookie Stackhouse books at the thrift store on a whim but now I'm curious if they live up to the hype or not? Thoughts?

message 2: by Rachel Annie (new)

Rachel Annie (snapdragoness) I'm a fan, but keep in mind they're a bit different than True Blood if you've watched that.

message 3: by Ambisaurus (new)

Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) I know they're different but I've also heard that towards the end Sookie gets kind of slutty and that the action kind of disappears.

Krysta (krystafig) | 4089 comments I am on Dead in the Family (Book 10) now and the series really isn't all that great anymore.
There's not much action anymore and at this point I'm really just wanting to finish the series because I'm so far along already.

message 5: by Ambisaurus (new)

Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) How many are there in all?

message 6: by G.G. (new)

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 118 comments 13 plus one that relates everything that happens to the characters afterwards. I haven't seen it. Just read about it here on GR.

Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) Thanks =)

Ally (allisond1) | 8 comments I never finished the 11th book. I'm sorry, but I just got bored with this series.

message 10: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca | 6 comments I haven't read the last couple of books. They started to just feel like more of the same, but maybe that's a problem most series this long end up experiencing. =/

I did love the first handful, tho!

message 11: by Rachel Annie (new)

Rachel Annie (snapdragoness) I didn't finish the 11th either.

The fourth, Dead to the World (Sookie Stackhouse, #4) by Charlaine Harris , is one of my all time favorite PNR's.

☺~Tina~☺ (tina007) | 14 comments I like the first say 9 books. After that they were just okay and I finished because I didn't want to NOT know how the series ended. They are not terrible just blah.

message 13: by Ambisaurus (new)

Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) I guess blah is better than downright horrible. I might be able to deal with blah.

message 14: by Krysta (new)

Krysta (krystafig) | 4089 comments If you want to start and finish the series, I would suggest going in to it expecting a quick and easy read, nothing profound or thought-provoking.

message 15: by Laura (new)

Laura Adams | 3 comments I got as far as book 8.

I bought them a couple of books at a time but when I finished 8 I just didn't have the urge to read on anymore. Mainly because I had stopped really caring about the characters by that point.

I do agree with Rachel~SnapDragoness though, book 4 is really good.

message 16: by Ambisaurus (new)

Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) I randomly bought 1-4 and 7-10 in a bundle during one of my thrift store trips. It all came to six dollars so I guess whether I like it or not it won't be a total Lisa. I just hope I actually like it enough to read what I have.

message 17: by Martine (new)

Martine (martinealaplage) | 7 comments So how many of the series are really worth reading? The first 5? 6? For how many books were you guys absorbed by the series?

message 18: by G.G. (new)

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 118 comments I read them fast from 1 to 11. Took me a while to get the 12 and that might be the only one that I can honestly say I didn't like. I haven't read the 13 yet. I will though, when it comes in paperback. I hate paying that much for ebook and I will definitely not buy in in hardcover. I am curious to read it but not THAT much curious.

Absorbed by it? I don't know about that. They were easy read, some were better than others. I have noticed that many of them I was about half in and all I knew about the story was that she wore this or that dress with little flowers and a little bit of make up and she sat in the sun with a lemonade because she didn't know what else to do and she loves to sit in the sun anyways because it gives her a nice sun tan and... and... and... well I am sure you get what I mean already... I can't say in which book exactly it started to get on my nerve but at some point, it did.

message 19: by Martine (new)

Martine (martinealaplage) | 7 comments LOL I get the picture! I mean, there are such good books to read out there... and so little time to read them all... I think I'll pass on this series. Thanx G.G. ! :D

message 20: by Reed (new)

Reed Bosgoed (ReedBosgoed) | 8 comments I tried the first one and didn't care for it at all, but I don't really think that I'm the target audience.

message 21: by Bronda (new)

Bronda | 67 comments I've only read the first book. It is really good. It's somewhat different from the True Blood tv show.

fabby | 497 comments i have read the whole series up to date plus the novellas and i was always craving more ,if you are following the tv series you probably will be disappointed because they don't follow the books after i think the second one but to answer you yes they rock

message 23: by Amanda (new)

Amanda L. (awikstrand) The first half of the series seems to have more complete plot lines within each book than the last few books. Book 11 and 12 seemed like set-ups for book 13. I am just about to read that book and hope for the best.

Overall, I really enjoy them. I like them much more than True Blood but they are two completely different things.

message 24: by G.G. (new)

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 118 comments @Amanda I agree. I preferred by far the books over the True Blood series.
The books were not all that bad. In fact I enjoyed the first ones quite a lot. As I said I don't know when exactly I started to feel as there could be much more and they were missing something. Do I regret buying them and reading them? Not at all. Would I recommend them? Sure. I would simply add with my recommendation that at some point the quality goes down. Yet, that doesn't mean they are not worth reading. I am sorry if my earlier post came out that way.

message 25: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. Amber I love the series. This is actually the series that had me reading paranormal books again. They were so enjoyable, I read through them as soon as I finished the books the first time (I think I had 6 of them then). I'm sure you'll love them.

message 26: by Alisha (new)

Alisha | 36 comments They are okay, like others said, they start to fall towards the end. It was a predictable ending, and the last three all felt like should have been one book. In fact, it's hard for me to remember which events happened in which book they were so similar.

message 27: by Rei (new)

Rei (girl_from_hell) | 2 comments YES! Also, the hype? The books are FAR better than the series although some characters are better in the serial like PAM while most have been ruined by the show (personal opinion: Sookie, herself, at least)
I started off with the books and watched the series AFTER so I might be biased but I do like the show as well. Although the books? Definitely better :)

message 28: by Martine (new)

Martine (martinealaplage) | 7 comments I watched the first two episodes of True Blood and did not get into it. I was hoping that maybe I would enjoy the books better... So if the books are far better, I might at least try the first one...

message 29: by G.G. (new)

G.G. (ggatcheson) | 118 comments Oh yes Martine the books are so much better! I first saw glimpses of True Blood and couldn't stand it, which kept me away from the books.
Much later, I decided to give the book a try and liked them (at least a lot of them). I now can watch True blood but I can't stand their Sookie. She is NOT how I had imagined her from the book. Someone here mentioned she only liked Pam, funny because Pam is one I can't stand in the TV series. She is supposed to look like Barbie, (True blood's Pam sure doesn't). She is supposed to be the closest friend Sookie could have that is a vampire. True Blood's Pam is far from being friendly to Sookie.
Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe it's all in my imagination, but then I choose my idea of the characters over the TV shows.

TB's Sookie is quite different from the books, yes. Don't the books say she's a size 10, and maybe could squeeze into an 8 on a good day?

message 31: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (worgan) I haven't watched the TV series but my colleague raves on about it. From what I have heard, it's pretty different from the books - the basis is the same but the story lines are different and so is character development.

Book-wise, I loved the first two books, hated the third and then became increasingly bored. I think it may have something to do with the fact I read about 10 straight after each other...

I think I've been meaning to read number 12 for about a year and a bit now? Oops.

message 32: by Tina Theresa (new)

Tina Theresa | 47 comments I just finished the first book. It was okay. Its not a series that I have to read. And I would borrow at the library not buy it.

message 33: by Ambisaurus (new)

Ambisaurus Rex (ambisaur) Yeah that's how I felt after reading the first book. I don't think I'll ever pay full price on any of the books. Might swap for them but that's all.
