Gus | 4 comments Re-reading the series in anticipation of the tv series. Am in Outlander now. so surprised about how much i had forgotten. Does anyone know who the scottish fellow is that Frank sees looking up at Clare in her bedroom window (before she goes thru the stones)? I never figured that out. SPOILER ALERT to the answer for anyone who hasn't read all 7 yet. I have, but still don't remember who he is!

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments I'm pretty sure its Jamie...herself has said it is, but no explaination behind it

message 3: by Zoey (new)

Zoey (rozannen) | 229 comments Yes DG has said it is Jamie & that it will all be explained at the end of the last book. Which is supposed to be Book 9.

message 4: by [deleted user] (new)

I am so very glad to hear that.

message 5: by Marjorie (new)

Marjorie | 19 comments I heard that as well. In book 9 it will be explained. I do remember something Jamie had said: I will find no matter what!! Have to look for that comment and let you know.

message 6: by Marjorie (new)

Marjorie | 19 comments I found the comment that Jamie said in Outlander before Claire returned back to her time. Page 889..."I will find you" he whispered in my ear. " I promise. If I must endure two hundred years of purgatory, two hundred years without you-then that is my punishment...

This made my tears come!!!! Perhaps this is Jamie's ghost??

message 7: by Enoccolino (new)

Enoccolino | 3 comments Yes. In a dream. He described a telephone to Claire. Cannot wait for Book 9. Has anyone read the short story of Micheal Murray and Joan MacKenzie? Travel from lallybroch to France? It is awesome and explains a little about time traveling.

message 8: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Enoccolino - yes, I did - The Space Between. Lovely story! Can't wait for more Michael and Joan!

I started Outlander again, too, but I'm close to the end of the book and the parts I like the least. I know, I know... but it never gets easier to read.

message 9: by [deleted user] (new)

I really enjoyed reading the novellas and side novels that go along with the Outlander series. I just purchased and read all of them while on medical leave over the last two weeks. Of the novellas, I really enjoyed "The Space Between" the most. I found it fascinating. I also really like Lord John a lot more now that I've experienced his trials and tribulations from his point of view.

message 10: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Joanna, I felt the same way about Lord John. I really didn't like him much before I started reading his series of novels. Complicated to explain...

But I did come to appreciate him and understand better why and how Jamie thinks of Lord John as one of his best friends. (At least until MOBY - LOL!)

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm now on to reading "Drums of Autumn" and I look forward to when Lord John comes back into the series again. I'll look at him a whole new way now that I've read about his own history.

Have you lots of tissue's, buy some!!

message 13: by [deleted user] (new)

Marjorie, this is actually my second read of the series--this year (and ever)! :-) I just wanted to read everything in chronological order this time so I added in all of the side novels/novellas immediately after "Voyager" and before "Drums of Autumn." I'm really enjoying the big books a lot the second time through. I'm picking up on so many things I missed the first time through.

So true!! I have re-read them so many times, but still find something I over looked. The one that made the tears start runny is losing young Ian. Needed the tissue's!!

the other courtney | 162 comments It's not worth the expense (for the publisher) to crank out paper copies of novellas, unless they are part of an anthology. They don't sell as well. I used to be a paperback purist - now I cannot imagine not being able to pop my Kindle in my bag and go.

message 16: by [deleted user] (last edited Sep 23, 2013 04:54PM) (new)

I just bought all four of the Lord John books new, not used, in hardcover for $30 at Half Price Books and they were worth every penny. They look fantastic on my shelf next to the hardcover copies of all of the Outlander books and I really enjoyed the stories. I had to order the hardcover of A Trail of Fire from the UK so it's costing a bit more, but I like complete sets of books. I have the Outlander books in hardcover and on Kindle and I don't feel at all like I was cheated by the publisher. I love them and don't mind spending the money. Some people don't feel that way, but the side novels and novellas were worthwhile and helped me to understand the Outlander characters a lot more than I did from just reading the big books. Five books cover all of the side novels/novellas so it's not a huge investment.

Heather in FL (heather_fl) gertt wrote: "I'm sure Kindles are nice and everyone I know who has one says they're great, but I can take a book the same as a Kindle...pop it in my bag and go. "

But I can take ALL of my Outlander novels with me and not break my back, lol. And if I'm done with them, I can download a new book (or have several more on deck). I know people love the feel of books, but I honestly would not read as much as I do if not for my Kindle. It's just convenient to always have a book (or 100) ready and waiting for me, but not have to carry them all around.

BUT... to each his/her own. It'd be a boring world if we were all the same. :-)

Diane | 1360 comments Where the whole e- reader thing got to me (I used to be against them) was when my eyes started fading. I love the back lit words that I can read in a dim room and I can easily change the font size. It is so much easier for me to read anywhere any time, instead of sitting right under a light or in bright daylight. I was hooked once I realized this and that buy with one click feature has me addicted. I definately read more now but still do some paper books.

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Heather, I agree. I read much more because of my Kindle and how easy it is to carry everything with me, but if there is a book I really love I'll sometimes also buy it for my shelf just so that I can see it and enjoy it there in my library.

Peggyzbooksnmusic Diane wrote: "Where the whole e- reader thing got to me (I used to be against them) was when my eyes started fading. I love the back lit words that I can read in a dim room and I can easily change the font size...."

I was also sure I would never want an e-reader, but like you my eyesight isn't as good as it was when I was younger, plus I have arthritis in both hands and had a difficult time reading large books such as Outlander.

But I still sometimes get physical books from the library or even buy a used book as there is just something special about a "real" book.

Lady's View (fwgal41) | 56 comments I have the entire series on my various mobile devices. I love them.

message 22: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments Do any of you re readers find that you enjoy one of the books much more in your re read and then go back and change the rating? I was tempted to do that but stuck with my first impression.

message 23: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm on my first re-read of the series and am just now on Drums of Autumn, but I like it a lot more this time around. I haven't changed my rating, though, since I had already rated it high. :-)

message 24: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) Diane, I do change ratings, some times. I tend to be a tough rater; as I've read other books, I find that sometimes I've been over conservative on a rating... or maybe now I appreciate the book more.

Peggyzbooksnmusic Diane wrote: "Do any of you re readers find that you enjoy one of the books much more in your re read and then go back and change the rating? I was tempted to do that but stuck with my first impression."

When I read DIA for the first time, I loved the beginning and end but struggled with the middle. Gave it either 3 or 4 stars. Then after reading all of the other books in the series and realizing how important the events were to the story and how skillfully DG told the story, I changed the rating to 5 stars. All of the other books in the series have been 5 star reads for me!

message 26: by Diane (new)

Diane | 1360 comments Thats how I felt about DIA but over keep it at a 4 because if it doesn't do it the first time around some people may not go on to the next. I love this series that I feel like they need a six star category for them self. My other 5 star books do not usually meet up to DG.

Fawn | 404 comments Lady's View wrote: "I have the entire series on my various mobile devices. I love them."

Me too! I have all of the books. Some hard cover, some Paperback (some both) I have them all on my kindle and I have them all in audible form.(audible some on my kindle, some on my ipod and some on my computer) I am covered! lol

message 28: by Fawn (last edited Sep 26, 2013 09:30PM) (new)

Fawn | 404 comments Yes, I read a lot of other books. I don't think Jamie & Claire will ever leave me though. I always go back to them. I actually have met some Authors from these discussions on the Outlander threads that I like quite a lot. Like Anita Clenney, Lynne Sears Williams,Ginger Myrick, Cat Dubie lol I could go on there are more. The thing about Outlander is I can pick up any book in the series at any time on any page and be sucked right in. I feel like I discover something I missed before each time too.

CHC94 | 44 comments Where can I buy "The Space Between"?

message 31: by Katie (new)

Katie Raeder (raederkatie) | 153 comments You can find it in a collection of short stories in A Trail of Fire. Very good collection I enjoyed them quite a lot.

message 32: by [deleted user] (new)

It is part of A Trail of Fire which is a UK import that includes four short stories about Outlander characters. I actually have a brand new soft cover of it because I decided to get it in hard cover after I had already had it shipped from the UK and it is too expensive to ship it back for a refund. If you want it, I'll sell it to you for $7. It cost me twice that due to shipping internationally. Otherwise, you can find it at Amazon. If you are interested, you can send me your address and I have a paypal account. It is a really good read. I really enjoyed it.

message 33: by Katie (new)

Katie Raeder (raederkatie) | 153 comments A Trail of Fire by Diana Gabaldon

It really is an awesome book. I got lucky to get it without great cost because I live in Germany. I will be looking for the series in Hardcover once we return to the states in the next couple of years. Joanna can I purchase A Trail of Fire in Hardcover in the states or should I locate one here before coming back?

message 34: by Heather in FL (new)

Heather in FL (heather_fl) CHC94 wrote: "Where can I buy "The Space Between"?"

I borrowed The Mad Scientist's Guide to World Domination Original Short Fiction for the Modern Evil Genius by John Joseph Adams from the library.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

I had to buy the hard cover from the UK so if you can get it overseas, I would.

message 36: by Katie (new)

Katie Raeder (raederkatie) | 153 comments Thanks! Good to know.

message 37: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments I got my copy from Amazon UK.

Was delivered fairly quickly, too.

message 38: by [deleted user] (new)

I ordered through Amazon too but it took maybe two weeks to get it. When I bought it it said that it could take up to a month to be delivered, which I thought was strange.

message 39: by Katie (new)

Katie Raeder (raederkatie) | 153 comments In all honesty a month is about average for packages and mail in general to go from Europe to the states and vice-versa. Once mom mailed us 3 boxes at the same time, two got here together about two weeks later but the 3rd took 12 weeks to arrive.

message 40: by Lori (new)

Lori (lorimcd) I got my copy from Abebooks - it was an Italian vendor, and it took FOREVER to get here to the states. Sounds like the UK vendors are quicker.

But LOVE A Trail of Fire by Diana Gabaldon . I'd read all the short stories except for the new one in that book, The Space Between. Fantastic - can't wait for more with those characters. And it tied in so well with the other 3 stories... if you read all the stories in that book, pay close attention to last names. Lots of cross-overs from story-to-story, time to time.
