Thanks. I think you're right. I'll give it another try later on.

The first book is weak but I really like the series and I think it develops in the rest of the books. The first book is just a stage setting so you have a bit of an idea of what the alternative world is all about. It has more action and more complex characters further along. I didn't find it that boring myself but I've just gotten to read the first book having started with #3 which is all the library had.

I have not read it but I tried to watch the movie based on it and could not finish it. I'm sure it would be a better read though. It's supposed to be a unique take on the vampire genre.

I really liked the movie until the ending which I didn't like at all.

Candace | 3 comments This week I read City of Bones, by Cassandra Clare, and Vicious Circle by Linda Roberts. I actually won a signed copy of Vicious Circle and received it yesterday in the mail. Ran upstairs to my apt grinning the entire way. It was a great read, and I'm definitely looking forward to the next installment in the series!

I've got The Laughing Corpse on hold at the library. I can't wait to read it! I agree with you in a way, I think most of the first books in a good series are usually a little more dull than the following ones. I guess it is all of the world building and explaining?

message 258: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments I think most of the time that first book syndrome goes hand in hand with a first person narrator. We're stuck in one character's head, but most people don't think in history lesson format, so it often feels clunky to get paragraphs of background info.

message 259: by Anne (new)

Anne I've never thought of it that way, but you could be right.

message 260: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments Of course, it all depends on the writer's ability. Some are great at interspersing informative tidbits and you don't even realize they've burned a whole world into your brain.

Charlaine Harris is good at world-building when you're not looking. One of the best examples is when Sookie's friend is watching a reality show on tv sort of like What Not to Wear, but with vamps. Shows just how widespread the vamps' assimilation into human society has gone!

message 261: by Joy (new)

Joy (crowgirl) I've just started a short story collection edited by Ellen Datlow & Terri Windling called The Coyote Road Trickster Tales. Its many stories fall in the UF classification featuring Coyote and even Crow. The introduction enlightened me that there are 2 other collections by the same editors; 'The Green Man' and The 'Faery Reel' which are going on my list.

Windling always seems to get stories from the best authors (this book has a Charles de Lint story called 'Crow Road.")

I have to mention the lovely little bits of title art. A different sketch for each story. Nice.

Cathy (cathygreytfriend) | 55 comments Dreamfever, lots of action, Mac is tough, Dani is too cute, not enough answers about Barrons yet, but I'm hoping for more. Next is The Law of Nines, I can't wait to see if or how it fits into the Sword of Truth stories.

message 263: by Lynda (new)

Lynda I finished rereading Nancy Holder's Blood and Fog. It is one of my favorite Buffy the Vampire Slayer's novels. I also read The Greek Cookbook by Sophia Skoura. I am making baked fish with tomatoes for dinner. It is baking now and smells wonderful. After dinner, I am going to start Lover Eternal by J. B. Ward.

message 265: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 169 comments I jsut Finished Succubus Blues. I'm not sure what I think of it. I've never finished a book and not known whether I wanted to read the next book or not until this one. I like Mead's world, so I think I will probably give the second book a shot. But some part of me is more interested in Georgina's friends than I am in her.

message 266: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments No worries, Jessica. I feel the same way! And I've read all 4 books.

But I suppose there are many series where people aren't pulled in by the main character, but by the world and supporting characters. I feel that way about Anita Blake sometimes.

message 267: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 169 comments Well, I don't feel so bad then LOL. Sometimes I just wanted to strangle her. And the worst part was I knew who 'the bad guy' was at the halfway point in the book. Getting to the big reveal was really disappointing because of that.

I'm really curious to see more of Carter. And Hugh is awesome. But, Georgina mostly annoys or frustrates me. If the next book is as predictable, I'll be passing on the rest.

message 268: by The Flooze (new)

The Flooze (the_flooze) | 179 comments Lol, Jessica. In a thread in another group I said the exact same thing--I'm never all that surprised by the plots in the succubus series. I enjoyed the first two though. The third and fourth frustrated me. But you're right that I'm reading it more for the ensemble and desperately hoping for more info on Carter. Plus, now I want to know if my theory on how it will all end is proven right!

Mead's Dark Swan series is awesome. There are two books so far, starting with Storm Born. Don't let your frustrations with succubus deter you from reading that one. Action-packed and quite sexy.

I think you will really like The Graveyard Book, Melodie! I enjoyed it even more than Coraline. I did feel like the ending should have been longer, it seemed sort of abrupt. Let me know what you think when you are done.

message 271: by Jessica (new)

Jessica | 169 comments Hrm, if they remain fairly predictable and don't give me much Carter, I think maybe I'll pass on the rest. Or put it low on the list at least. At this point I'm not overly invested in the series. I don't feel like I *have* to know where its going.

Maybe I'll pick up her other series instead and see how I feel about that one.

I really enjoyed her Dark Swan series but not the succubus series. I read the first two succubus books and decided not to bother with the rest until I am completely out of other series to read. Dark Swan is great though, I recommend giving it a shot before writing off Mead completely.

Anne I'm almost done with Dead Witch Walking. Not sure how I feel about it. Ivy is creeping me out, Rachel is kind of an idiot, and so far there are no cute guys in sight. Jenks is cool though.

Joy (crowgirl) Anne wrote: "I'm almost done with Dead Witch Walking. Not sure how I feel about it. Ivy is creeping me out, Rachel is kind of an idiot, and so far there are no cute guys in sight. Jenks is cool though."

Rachel is on a learning curve and Ivy is scary as is the whole vampire society but wait until you get to the demons in the later books. My comments about first books applies especially to this series. The first book is very weak because the world is being introduced. It gets better in my opinion in later books. This is NOT a hot sex UF, more of an adventure.

About the The Graveyard Book a big thumbs up from me. Its made me wish I had kids to read to. I also loved the illustrations.

I have never been able to like this series and I have read every one of them. Why I don't know. But I disliked the last one, White Witch, Black Curse, so much I'm not going to read any more of them. Jenks is great, but I've never liked Rachel and Ivy is one of the creepier vamps out there.

I finished Bad Moon Rising on Friday night. Freakin FANTASTIC!! I hate that it takes soooooo long for the new ones to come out! lol
I also finished Coraline and Blue Bloods. I enjoyed them both.

I am now out of library books until at least Tuesday but I remembered I had Odd Thomas and Forever Odd from a yard sale (free) so I started Odd Thomas last night. Funny and dark...my kinda stuff.

Glad I'm not alone in the woods. I'm looking forward to seeing how Rachel Morgan solves her 'demon' problem and is there a future with bad boy Trent?

Tanya Huff's stories also a favorite but I was disappointed in the TV series that it inspired.

I'm just the opposite. I loved the TV show, but wasn't all that crazy about the books. Kyle Schmid as Henry is one of the very hottest vamps ever, IMHO, as evidenced by my avatar!

Dawn | 18 comments Theresa wrote: "Crowgirl wrote: "Tanya Huff's stories also a favorite but I was disappointed in the TV series that it inspired..."

Crowgirl- I think they are talking about the series Blood Ties. It was inspired by Tanya Huffs Blood books. It about Vicki Peterson a private detective working with a Vampire named Henry. It was on the Lifetime channel for 2 seasons I think. It plays in reruns now. I think it's okay I watched a rerun the other night.

message 284: by Joy (new)

Joy (crowgirl) Melodie wrote: "Kyle Schmid as Henry is one of the very hottest vamps ever"

I won't argue that about Kyle Schmid in Blood Ties. They picked a good match for Henry Fitzroy. Short, arrogant and handsome (great hair) but I felt the plots were just rehashed 'Supernatural' concepts with a female x-cop instead of 2 brothers.

The books feature much more depth in Henry's character and powers while Henry was just a weak side note in the TV series. Couldn't have been that popular as it was dropped in mid-story and didn't include Henry's bi-sexual side at all or his sex with Vicki.

I watched all the episodes as they're on DVD and I'm a sucker for even bad vampire cinema. My friends who loved the old TV show 'Forever Knight' loved Blood Ties'. I'm more of a 'True Blood.' type of person.

I never got into Forever Knight. I usually love anything with vampires, but that show never did anything for me. Leaving out the sex with Vicki part was a mistake, I think, even tho they couldn't have done a whole lot with it on Lifetime, but I didn't miss the bisexuality part! True Blood tops Blood Ties everytime, but as hot as Alex Skarsgard is as Eric, he'll never top Kyle as Henry.

message 286: by Paula (new)

Paula (pauldajo) I decided to read The Sharing Knife: Legacy by Lois McMaster Bujold. I'm not sure to what classification it belongs. The book seems to be a relationship novel with some magic and a big scary blob that tries to distroy everything it can get its blobby hands on (may not have hands).

Here's one Forever Knight fan who wasn't impressed with Blood Ties. In fact, I haven't liked any vampire TV series as much as FK. You see, I believed that Nick Knight was as old as he was supposed to be. I didn't believe for a minute that the Henry Fitzroy on Blood Ties was once a Tudor era prince. Sorry.

Jackie (Literary Escapism) (literaryescapism) I am currently reading Annette McCleave's DRAWN INTO DARKNESS. It's paranormal romance and it's good. It's definitely a quick read. I'm getting ready to read Mark Henry's HAPPY HOUR OF THE DAMNED.

Joy (crowgirl) Child of a Dead God makes book #6 of the Handee series 'The Noble Dead.' Not quite a Vampire series, not just Swords & Sorcery, but I've enjoyed the series. I did find the first book slow but it picks up after that.

I would never have seen elves and vampires as a combination for a story but I'm finding more anti-Tolkien elves in stories these days. Elves who just find humans repulsive. Well, I have to agree with that at times.
