Andrews, Ilona; Magic Burns (Kate Daniels #2); "Informal Buddy Read" ; Start Date 9th October 2013

Just don't forget to identify the section/chapter at the beginning to avoid spoilers, OK?
You can even use the little starts above - If anybody knows about black and white paws to match Curran's, just let me know and I'll switch.

Magic Flare
Remember the magic waves? It all started with a flare. Is like a magma explosion, so the consequences are HUGE. This book experiences one big flare.
1)Kate is not happy, because really bad things can happen during flares
2)Curran's hair grows like a maniac during magic flares. So for everyone wanting to grab the lion's mane, this is the book to read *giggles*
Beastkin
We learned in Magic Bites that we sometimes have were-something and in rare occasions something-were.
Animals that can change into humans exists. Rarely, they have some kind of thought and speech, like Corwin had. In even rarer occasions, they can breed. The offspring of a were-animal and an animal-were are called beastkin... and usual are killed on site. In this book, we discover that Curran is the beast lord, but that doesn't make him a beast.
Happy readings!!!
Of, and just a TTRC teaser, this one is peeeeerrrrfect for the read-a-Thon Book Hunt!

Yeah I agree. I finished it and the action sustains throughout the entire read.
Ok I admit to starting over the weekend and I'm now about 170 pages in. It is just so hard to stop! Loving this more than book 1. It just sucks you in completely

Karen, I'm glad I'm not the only one!

I just checked my updates and by page 67 I was sucked in. I also listened to book 1 on audio and didn't much like the narrator do that could also be why I like this one much more!

A very skillfully-written, decent enterntaining piece :)
I would like to read the third book, so I've scheduled it on November :)

So I'm good!
So true Nicole.
I finished today and although I'm still not quite sure of the whole back-story with Kate, we sure got glimpses of something intresting there.
I really enjoyed this book - much more than the first. I think the world starts to make more sense, and the character development makes for intriguing reading, but also more humour too.

I'm 50% on my re-reading, and loving EVERY MINUTE!This series is so good, that is like knowing what will happen, but discovering the road to get there anyway.

What do you think of Bran?

I want to know when we find out Kate's secret. And when she and Curran get together. ;)
This one was fun for me, especially as a fan of the Iron Druid series. The Morrigan was a bit scarier in this series, though. I loved loved loved (view spoiler)
I can't wait to read the next one in November!
No, I don't want to know the secrets! I like having it all slowly uncovered :)
And I agree about your spoiler Logan
Looking forward to the next book!

I didn't like Bran. Not one bit. I thought that he was pretentious and snotty and way too much like too many guys I've met. Although, I did like the character development that Kate took him on before he died. A little bit ;)
I LOVED Curran being in her house at the end, but only because he made her coffee. There was something about that that said he was lonely too, and he understood. Something that was quiet instead of the shows of strength they so often engage in.
It didn't strike me that the fight or the end sequence was too short. I thought it was just right, actually. Though I was surprised that Kate was there at all afte the smackdown Curran delivered about her small army of one..
Oh I liked Bran. Despite him being pretentious and snotty! I guess I liked the humour he brought to the story.
I agree with you about Curran. Some really nice moments with them in this book.
And just to be different, I thought the fight sequence was a tad long, but that is just because that stuff never tends to be my kind of thing ;)

The thing I loved about Julie was getting to put Kate in this maternal/aunt role. I felt so sorry for her when she mentioned her loneliness and how even just being with someone would get her into trouble because of her secret magic or whatever. If the mother thing is off the table for her, how nice that she got to develop this relationship with Julie - and that appears will continue on after this book?

I hope so Logan. I would love to see how Julie matures and brings out that protective , softer side of Kate!

I liked Bran mainly for the humourous part of his character, I think that it is a convention of the story for Kate to meet such "suitors" (Saim also behaved "unpleasantly" during the flare), so it wasn't especially annoying, but after the lake "scene" I found that I was sorry for him and his "wrong" wish. I agree that he was a slave and finally found the streght and reason to act like a real hero and save Julie. That was touching.
I was only disappointed in Jim's attitude. Somehow, after the first part, I thougt he was not only Kate's professional partner, but also her friend, but it the second installment he didn't act very friendly.

Jim: i picked on this too. I understand that pack is first but still. His attitude was questionable. Got me wondering if there is not more that we do not know about.
Bran: i found he was the cliché villain that ends up doing the right thing at the end. No suprise there.
Julie: while I agree with all of you about Julie and I hope will we see her again, one thing bothered me. Did not Kate went from "the kid" to "my kid" a bit fast?

He kind of irritated me in the beginning with all the sexual innuendo but then when we learn more about him it became obvious to me that he must have been so lonely being by himself all the time - I began to feel sorry for him.
I though he was a true hero in the end and I was really sad that he died :0(
I also enjoyed Kate's dynamic with Julie.
It has a pay it forward kind of vibe. Greg took care of Kate when she was orphaned and now Kate is doing the same for Julie.
I liked Julie although she is a little naive for a street kid. She really had blinders on when it came to Red - but I suppose that love is blind.
@Danielle - I also liked Julie and agree with others that she will be a good character to develop Kate in future books
@Anima - I felt sorry for Bran too. I liked that he was a funny, superficial character and then you realise his back story which is actually quite tragic
@Anima & Esther - I agree about Jim. He really took a back seat in this book!
@Lauren - Good point about Kate and Greg!

It's Kate Daniels month so we're revisiting old (and new) buddy reads.
It you are re-reading the series in preparation for Magic Binds. Or just because of the Kate Daniels challenge (TBA) or reading it for the first time, just pop in and tell us what you think, we would love to hear about it.
Note: This thread expects spoilers, just tell us what chapter you are at so we can skip the comment or read at our own risk.
No need fancy stuff... just mark the comment at the beginning, for example like this:
*************************** Chapter 3 ******************

I enjoyed the characters and agree with the past discussions that say that you are drawn into the book more quickly. I really liked adding Julie to the "family" and I hope that we see her again in another book.
Looking forward to the next one!

Down in Atlanta, tempers – and temperatures – are about to flare…
As a mercenary who cleans up after magic gone wrong, Kate Daniels has seen her share of occupational hazards. Normally, waves of paranormal energy ebb and flow across Atlanta like a tide. But once every seven years, a flare comes, a time when magic runs rampant. Now Kate’s going to have to deal with problems on a much bigger scale: a divine one.
When Kate sets out to retrieve a set of stolen maps for the Pack, Atlanta’s paramilitary clan of shapeshifters, she quickly realizes much more at stake. During a flare, gods and goddesses can manifest – and battle for power. The stolen maps are only the opening gambit in an epic tug-of-war between two gods hoping for rebirth. And if Kate can’t stop the cataclysmic showdown, the city may not survive…
