I quit the Betsy series by MaryJanice Davidson after Betsy went to Hell.
I quit the Jane Yellowrock series when the new one came out and I just couldn't force myself to read it.
I've skipped over Sookie Stackhouse and The Hollows. Some books I've just skimmed to find out what's going on. Others I just skipped. But I will be there till the end (I was there for Sookie) just because I've gotta know how it ends.

I just got an early copy. I hope I feel differently.

The Fever series would have been absolutely fantastic if Mac wasn't the most annoying heroine I've ever encountered. I loved the plot and all the other characters but she made it a 3 star read for me.
I listened to the first Hollows book and enjoyed it very much but stopped halfway through the second - Rachel and Ivy's relationship is simply too weird for me. If they were a couple, it would make more sense but as it stands they irritate me no end.
I'm enjoying Jane Yellowrock but I've only read the first two books so that might change.

Bummer!

Ditto on the BDB the first few were ok and then after Phury's book (I think that is his name) I was like you what who cares lol
I did like the Night Huntress originally but now it is mediocre at best.

Present tense I think is hard in UF but personally I think it works really well in like a thriller or mystery. I like how some authors use a hybrid POV like the The Name of the Wind it is really hard to carry first person POV at least I think in UF...shows a lot of true writing talent.

I will say that most people really seem to like it, hopefully you will end up in that group.

I just quit that one with the last book. I felt a little guilty because the author came to a book club I was in to talk about the books. She was really nice.

I still enjoy the BDB enough to keep reading, but I totally agree with you about Halfway to the Grave, I made it through but gave it a (generous) 3 and not sure if I will get around to the next one.

The Anita Blake series because it's all "the ardeur" "the ardeur" but there's no plot besides that. I liked the first few but for me it just became bad porn.
Chicagoland Vamps & Dark Hunters are two that I don't dislike, they're ok stories but I don't understand why they are considered the best of the best. (in all fairness to DH I've only read three of them so I may change my mind later).

I heard it was really dark. Is that why you didn't like it or was it something else? (I have to admit that I'm super jealous of those of you who got an early copy).

I found how the vampires were to be weird, they were slaves, I had a hard time buying into that. The other big point for me that turned me off was the "couple" was odd. They first meet when she is 8 and she thinks that he killed his mate, who was her nanny. Fast forward 30 years, she is now an adult and he is the same. He is bitter and thinks that her family killed his mate and he hates everyone with the family name. Both of them buy into the stereo types of humans/vamps that their species believe. It was this point I gave up.

That is the one with the three sisters like Charmed...yeah it did not do much for me. The one line that really killed it was the sister who is also a tabby cat and she says something to the effect of she was a virgin in human form thus implying she was not in tabby form. EWWW

HILARIOUS!!!

The Hallows is set in Chicago but in an alternate reality, where you have this mix of supernatural people like witches, vampires, werewolves, demons, pixy/faries and humans but they just came out like fifty years ago so there is tension between the supes and the other groups. Anyway Rachel Morgan (the main character) is a PI/bounty hunter and she is also a witch who is facing different challenges which is normally the plot and then there are these sub-plots that deal with her relationships both platonic, family and sexual.
I love the series but if does not grab you by the end of the first book it may not be the series for you.

I read the first three in the Otherworld series and liked them - gave them each 4 stars - but I have tried and tried to read book 4 and just cant do it. I have had to return it to the library 3 times so far, and now I have it as an ebook and still cant get through it. I dont understand how this happened as there is nothing I can point to as being the-part-I-dont-like. I dont really want to skip ahead though as there is usually quite a lot going on in each book.

I agree on JR Ward and the ilk (Feehan, Galenorn and Nalini Singh are others)- who crank out book after book with the same formula- one woman for one man and nauseating dialogue about emotions, interspersed with whining. I want action and more realistic interaction between characters. I think Ward, Feehan and Galenorn are just poor writers cashing in on readers who haven't found anything better. But even for the better writers, whether UF or PNR, I don't read an entire series consecutively- I find that if I do I start to pick up on annoying comments or traits, which sours me on the series. SO I pace the series and thus am more forgiving of the weaknesses. I love UF- but am picky about authors. Each to her own, but the good ones for me include authors like Kim Newman, Harry Connolly, Charlie Huston, Mario Acevedo, Lilith Saintcrow, Karen Chance, Jim Butcher, Nancy Collins, Jenna Black, Benedict Jacka, Philippa Bornikova, etc.

I've found this as well. If I don't pace myself, I get tired of the characters and the repetitive writing style so I usually space books in a series once a month or every two months. That way the story is fresh in my mind but I don't lose interest.

The Hallows takes place in Ohio. Not important but just thought I'd let you know. :)

Duh so right ...I am headed to Chicago this week perhaps I am projecting lol

You are not alone I finished the first one and it just did not do anything for me.

LOL ok that is very wacky lol

- Unfortunately, I am one of those people who feel compelled to complete a book or series after I start it. I'll be reading the next book, eventually.

This got me thinking...I wonder if anyone else has a popular series that they just cannot get into? If so care to share?
