Dawn (dawnv) | 4058 comments I am trying to read Blood Bound and like her other books I get about half way through and think why the heck am I reading this??

This got me thinking...I wonder if anyone else has a popular series that they just cannot get into? If so care to share?

message 2: by Sara (new)

Sara | 860 comments The Fever series by Karen Marie Moning, the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon, and the Vampire Academy series by Richelle Mead. I read the first book in each of the series - it was okay - but they didn't interest me enough to pursue the next book in the series.

message 3: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 93 comments The Hollows series. I read Dead Witch Walking, and just didn't like the main character at all. I finished the book, but gave up on the series.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments I hate to say it, but the new series by Larissa Ione, Bound by Night (MoonBound Clan Vampires, #1) by Larissa Ione . I got an early copy, love the author, was really looking forward to it, but ended dnf'ing it.

message 5: by Mike (new)

Mike | 353 comments Faith Hunter's Jane Yellowrock, and anything written in present tense like the Hunger Games. The tense thing really bothers me. No one tells a story like that, even if you write in a diary it is in past tense. Stories are told in past tense that is what makes them stories.

message 6: by Bungluna (new)

Bungluna | 32 comments I've run out of strength to continue several series. Some I just skip to the next book and maybe all will be well. Others I just can't continue and must make the divorce final.

I quit the Betsy series by MaryJanice Davidson after Betsy went to Hell.

I quit the Jane Yellowrock series when the new one came out and I just couldn't force myself to read it.

I've skipped over Sookie Stackhouse and The Hollows. Some books I've just skimmed to find out what's going on. Others I just skipped. But I will be there till the end (I was there for Sookie) just because I've gotta know how it ends.

I just got an early copy. I hope I feel differently.

message 8: by Lauren (new)

Lauren (laurenjberman) J.R. Ward and the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I know that people rave and rave about it but I find the villains to be one dimensional and the dialogue is simply inane. I read the first three books and called it quits.

The Fever series would have been absolutely fantastic if Mac wasn't the most annoying heroine I've ever encountered. I loved the plot and all the other characters but she made it a 3 star read for me.

I listened to the first Hollows book and enjoyed it very much but stopped halfway through the second - Rachel and Ivy's relationship is simply too weird for me. If they were a couple, it would make more sense but as it stands they irritate me no end.

I'm enjoying Jane Yellowrock but I've only read the first two books so that might change.

Sandra J Weaver (sandraweaver) | 147 comments I quit the BDB after book 5 though I have several others. I just don't care anymore, I guess. I tried to read the first Night Huntress book (Halfway to the Grave) and couldn't get past the first chapter since I really hated Cat.

Ditto on the BDB the first few were ok and then after Phury's book (I think that is his name) I was like you what who cares lol

I did like the Night Huntress originally but now it is mediocre at best.

Present tense I think is hard in UF but personally I think it works really well in like a thriller or mystery. I like how some authors use a hybrid POV like the The Name of the Wind it is really hard to carry first person POV at least I think in UF...shows a lot of true writing talent.

I will say that most people really seem to like it, hopefully you will end up in that group.

I just quit that one with the last book. I felt a little guilty because the author came to a book club I was in to talk about the books. She was really nice.

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments A lot of the series that you all are mentioning I am reading, they used to be ones I had to read on release day, now I still read them, but don't run right out to get them, will wait for the library book.

I still enjoy the BDB enough to keep reading, but I totally agree with you about Halfway to the Grave, I made it through but gave it a (generous) 3 and not sure if I will get around to the next one.

message 17: by Carolyn F. (new)

Carolyn F. I do not like Yasmine Galenorn's books. I've tried 2 of them and her short stories, but I just cannot get into them at all.

message 18: by Alisa (new)

Alisa I can't stand Shelley Laurenston's series (either of the shifter ones). I've tried a couple of times over the years and they've always been DNF for me. I think the dialogue is cheesy & I don't like the humor. Those ones with those HeeHaw Redneck talking shifters about made me throw my Kindle.

The Anita Blake series because it's all "the ardeur" "the ardeur" but there's no plot besides that. I liked the first few but for me it just became bad porn.

Chicagoland Vamps & Dark Hunters are two that I don't dislike, they're ok stories but I don't understand why they are considered the best of the best. (in all fairness to DH I've only read three of them so I may change my mind later).

I heard it was really dark. Is that why you didn't like it or was it something else? (I have to admit that I'm super jealous of those of you who got an early copy).

message 20: by Darcy (new)

Darcy (sunnytat462) | 3123 comments Alisa wrote: "I heard it was really dark. Is that why you didn't like it or was it something else?"

I found how the vampires were to be weird, they were slaves, I had a hard time buying into that. The other big point for me that turned me off was the "couple" was odd. They first meet when she is 8 and she thinks that he killed his mate, who was her nanny. Fast forward 30 years, she is now an adult and he is the same. He is bitter and thinks that her family killed his mate and he hates everyone with the family name. Both of them buy into the stereo types of humans/vamps that their species believe. It was this point I gave up.

That is the one with the three sisters like Charmed...yeah it did not do much for me. The one line that really killed it was the sister who is also a tabby cat and she says something to the effect of she was a virgin in human form thus implying she was not in tabby form. EWWW

HILARIOUS!!!

Carla (carlajane) | 8 comments The Vampire Academy Series I stopped after the first Book. I can't get past pg 20 in the Sylvia Day Bared to you series. I also have the Luxe series, that I just can't read. I'm interested in The Hollows Series a few People mentioned. What's it about exactly?

message 24: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahjbailey) | 21 comments I tried Kim Harrison The hallow series after a friend suggested it. I finally finish dead witch walking but took me forever and only got one chapter in second book. I'm usually into this sort of books but just can't get into them.

The Hallows is set in Chicago but in an alternate reality, where you have this mix of supernatural people like witches, vampires, werewolves, demons, pixy/faries and humans but they just came out like fifty years ago so there is tension between the supes and the other groups. Anyway Rachel Morgan (the main character) is a PI/bounty hunter and she is also a witch who is facing different challenges which is normally the plot and then there are these sub-plots that deal with her relationships both platonic, family and sexual.
I love the series but if does not grab you by the end of the first book it may not be the series for you.

I read the first three in the Otherworld series and liked them - gave them each 4 stars - but I have tried and tried to read book 4 and just cant do it. I have had to return it to the library 3 times so far, and now I have it as an ebook and still cant get through it. I dont understand how this happened as there is nothing I can point to as being the-part-I-dont-like. I dont really want to skip ahead though as there is usually quite a lot going on in each book.

I agree on JR Ward and the ilk (Feehan, Galenorn and Nalini Singh are others)- who crank out book after book with the same formula- one woman for one man and nauseating dialogue about emotions, interspersed with whining. I want action and more realistic interaction between characters. I think Ward, Feehan and Galenorn are just poor writers cashing in on readers who haven't found anything better. But even for the better writers, whether UF or PNR, I don't read an entire series consecutively- I find that if I do I start to pick up on annoying comments or traits, which sours me on the series. SO I pace the series and thus am more forgiving of the weaknesses. I love UF- but am picky about authors. Each to her own, but the good ones for me include authors like Kim Newman, Harry Connolly, Charlie Huston, Mario Acevedo, Lilith Saintcrow, Karen Chance, Jim Butcher, Nancy Collins, Jenna Black, Benedict Jacka, Philippa Bornikova, etc.

I've found this as well. If I don't pace myself, I get tired of the characters and the repetitive writing style so I usually space books in a series once a month or every two months. That way the story is fresh in my mind but I don't lose interest.

Thethriftybooklady (readingdiva8511) | 109 comments I tried to read The Scent of Shadows (Signs of the Zodiac, #1) by Vicki Pettersson but just could not get into it. But my best friend swears it's awesome. Maybe at some point I'll give it another try but right nwo I'm nto interested.

The Hallows takes place in Ohio. Not important but just thought I'd let you know. :)

You are not alone I finished the first one and it just did not do anything for me.

message 33: by Mim (new)

Mim (charli309) | 11 comments I just noticed a book on amazon called 'starpeople'. It apparently stars (no pun intended) starfish shifters, including a 'sexy' hero who turns into a starfish at night. I'm still laughing because all I can picture is Patrick from spongebob playing the sexy alpha hero. Seriously just doesn't work for me

LOL ok that is very wacky lol

Thethriftybooklady (readingdiva8511) | 109 comments I also recently tried to read Guilty Pleasures (the first book in the Anita Blake books) by Laurell K Hamilton (sure I'm spelling that wrong) and couldn't get through it. I'm not one to make myself finish a book if I'm not into it. I know a lot of people like that series at least up until book 10 but I just couldn't get into it.

message 36: by Ronatha (new)

Ronatha Hall (roangl27) | 55 comments I read The Awakening (The Vampire Diaries, #1) by L.J. Smith and it was one of the worse books I have ever read. It's horribly written and the plot sucks. I have no idea how it became a tv series, much less how the series became so popular.
- Unfortunately, I am one of those people who feel compelled to complete a book or series after I start it. I'll be reading the next book, eventually.

message 37: by Bungluna (new)

Bungluna | 32 comments I should like Ann Rice but haven't been able to finish a single book of hers, and I've tried several. I also tried to get into the Cat and Bones books but couldn't get into them. I think I did finish the first one in that series.
